10 mo old recently started having NWs
« on: February 01, 2008, 15:51:18 pm »
My 10 mo old dd has always been a champion nighttime sleeper - and when I say champion, I really mean that.  From birth, she would sleep 5 hours at a stretch at night; from about 6 weeks on, she'd go to bed around 8, df at 10 wake once at 4 to feed, and sleep til 7.  At 3 mos, she gave up the 4 am feed.  Up until about 3 weeks ago, I could count on one hand the number of NWs we've had since then.  Now it's almost every night.  First, here's her routine:

E - 7:30 bf (this is when she wake up) 15-30 min
A - solids at 8:30 (cereal, fruit, yogurt, juice)
S - 10:30

E - 12/12:30 (whenever she wakes up) bf 10ish min
A - solids at 1 (meat, cheese, veggies, bread, water)
snack at 2:30/3 (cheerios, soy milk or fruit)
S - 3/3:30

4:30/5 - she wakes or I wake her (I often have to wake her)
A - solids dinner at 5:30/6 - usually meat, veggies
start bedtime routine at 7, bf 10-15 min and to bed by 7:30

She is an independent sleeper for naps and nighttime, has been since 3 mos.  Napping has been wonderfully consistent since 7 mos - when we gave up the df and she was able to handle 3 hrs of A time.  About a month ago, we gave up her 4:30/5 bf because she wouldn't nurse at bedtime, that's when I added  the  snack before her 2nd nap.  If she doesn't nurse well after her first nap, I will sometimes replace the snack with another bf.  I've been watching her NWs in relation to dropping the feed, there doesn't seem to be any correlation.  Sometimes she sleeps through with 3 feeds, sometimes not.  Sometimes she sleeps through with the snack bf, sometimes not.

When she wakes, dh and I wait to see if she will settle herself - this week, she's done that on 2 nights.  If she doesn't start to settle, one of us will go in, check her diaper, rock a bit, and put her back down.  She will then settle very easily - usually with just the sound of our voice.  She has not ever appeared hungry during those NWs - even when I'm there rocking her right by the boob - she's not interested.  Last night, she woke at 1:30, settled herself.  Woke again at 4:45, thought she settled herself, but cried again at 5:15, wouldn't settle.  I caved and fed her, one side, put her back to bed, she slept til 7:30.

I'm at a loss.  The NWs don't seem to be due to hunger, she's not OT.  I thought maybe she's in that beginning stages of transitioning to 1 nap, and I need to limit her day sleep.  But everything I've read says it's their naps that go wonky when they start the transition, not night sleep.  Is she just different?  She's a textbook baby and is a real joy when she gets enough sleep.

She has 2 teeth, I think she's cutting a 3rd, but she doesn't seem to be in pain.  She's not crawling or pulling up or walking....nothing developmental going on that I can tell.  Any ideas???????  I miss my champion night sleeper!!  (not to mention my night sleep!)

TIA
michelle

oh Michelle, I so feel your pain.  We have just been through this with ds, unexplained night wakings that weren't related to hunger.

I hope others will have some good advice for you - the only thing I can think of is that maybe she is getting a bit too much daytime sleep - here we do 1.0 hours in the morning, 1.5 hours in the afternoon, sometimes reversed, but usually 2.5 hours sleep and a 12 hour night.  I don't know what others would say is 'normal' and i know some need more and some need less.... If the next posts agree, perhaps you want to try a day or two of shortening one of her two naps - i would say the one that goes until 4.30 is a bit late in the day, but again, I'm no expert :-\ .

For us, it turned out our activity time needed to be a bit longer (we were 2.5-2.75 rather than a full 3 hours) and he had a little growth/developmental spurt - once all that was passed, things improved.

Just to troubleshoot with you, are there environmental factors (is it colder/warmer than usual) that could be affecting her sleep?

hugs to you, this too shall pass and sleep WILL return.

Thanks for the hugs.....I am going to try shortening her morning nap.  I'm a bit hesitant as to what that will mean for my day, but the nights aren't working now, so we'll see....

environmental factors - I can't think of any, but I'll try to be a bit more aware and see.....

Maybe she is finally realizing that her last A time is short....so maybe if she doesn't sleep until 5 pm, things will get better.....I know you enjoy the nap times (well I am sure it is great to have time while your dd naps, but I wouldn't know LOL) but I personally love night sleep more :)

oh, let us know how you do tonight.  we'll keep our fingers crossed for you that this goes well.  i was thinking more about it, and it does seem to me that maybe it is a daytime sleep affecting nighttime sleep thing.  sometimes i have to wake ds and he hates hates hates to be woken, but it guarantees that he will go down beautifully for the night.

hugs hugs hugs..... hope it works out.

well....we'll see how the night goes......I put her down at 3, and she was ready, went right to sleep.  But she woke at 4 SCREAMING, so I got her up, since I was going to get her up at 4:30 anyway.  She was super clingy the rest of the day, but went to bed without any trouble at 7:30....it's almost 10 and nothing yet...I"ll let you know how it goes!

Keep us posted Michelle!

Cutting daytime naps slightly would have been my suggestion too.   However, what time is she waking up, and what is she doing when she wakes (fussing?  chatting?  screaming?)    Just in case there are any other likely suggestions!

Well, she did sleep all night, but she did wake up a bit earlier than she usually does (got up somewhere between 6:30 and 7 instead of between 7 and 8), but not a huge deal.  I had intended to cut her morning nap short this morning too, but when dh went in to wake her, she was already awake.  We'll see how the night goes.

Byrony - when she wakes at night, she's SCREAMING.  Sometimes it's just one or two screams, other times, she keeps screaming, so we go in.  Sometimes she's got her eyes closed and is trying to go back to sleep, other times shes on her back looking for us and wanting up.  It's the total randomness of it that's got me puzzled.  Granted, she did sleep through the night last night, but I'm not sure that's because she slept less during the day, because she sometimes sleeps through the night when she has the loads of day sleep...I'll keep limiting day sleep and see what happens.  Unless you have ay other ideas?

Hmm, screaming would suggest OT or pain to me  :-\  :-\   Is it likely that she could be teething or something?  Is she otherwise well?  OT would fly in the face of our suggestions to cut down daytime sleep - in my experience too much daytime sleep usually means awake and wanting to play, unless she'd already been awake for ages playing before you were aware that she woke up, by which time she is getting OT????  Sorry I am not sure what to suggest now. I guess as she did better last night, continue cautiously with your current plan,  but if it doesn't seem to help I wouldn't push it too much.

What do you think?

I thought it might be teething too - I think she's working on the upper teeth - but it doesn't seem to bother her during the day (nor is it consistent every night).  I thought OT too, but then there's night like last night, she only had maybe 1 hr 45 min of day sleep, and slept straight through last night, but other times when she's only had that little sleep, she won't sleep through.....AHHHHHH  thats what's so weird - I can't seem to figure out any pattern at all.

On limiting day sleep - how much should I be looking at maxing her out at?  She used to get between 3 and 3 1/2 hrs, so now I'm looking at 2 1/2 - 2 hr 45 - is that ok?  She's getting 11.5/12  a night usually.

I think teeth generally bother them more at night than in the day, so you could you try giving some pain meds and teething gel before bed to see if that helps  :-\

On the daytime sleep front - I think just reduce gradually. At that age Katie was getting 2-2.5hrs of daytime sleep but she's always been on the low side of average for daytime sleep.  There is enormous variation between LOs in their daytime sleep requirements, and it is a bit of a matter of finding what works for you. Has she typically been average, less than average or more than average on daytime sleep?

Hi Michelle - I've always found that with L's teething (and you've heard all about that!), that the nights are when it really effects her.  Can be just a waking, and I give her some paracetemol and a rock and back to sleep, but it's like she wakes, feels the pain and just can't get back down.

oh, also, from experience, i would cut the am nap before the pm nap so as to not get the ew. Good for when the switch comes too.

hope it's going well

We've been giving her Tylenol before we put her to bed at night, but I've not given her any when she wakes (wait, I did once when she wouldn't stop crying even when I picked her up)

in terms of sleep - she started off not napping, then she's been pretty textbook in terms of amounts of sleep, if anything, tending towards the more sleep side.

Aly - should I limit her am nap even more than I am?  She used to take 1.5 - 2 hrs in the am (usually 2), and 1.5 in the pm.  So I'm shortening the first to 1 hr 15 min and the pm nap to 1 hr/1 hr 15 at least that's my plan - too drastic for the first nap?

It's the weekend, so everything's a bit off (and dh is off on  Mondays, so today's a bit off too), so we're still a bit in flux....she had 2 NWs last night (early on) - I'm sure it was OT as she got to bed a bit late, and we were having a Super Bowl party, with kids, so she was pretty amped up.

oops....she's not napping now, gotta go.....

Michelle, I would keep with what you have for a few days after today.  takes a few days for it to kick in. but if it's teething, then it will keep up - kwim?  I think she could go less naps so what you have sounds right compared to what she had been doing.  anymore I think would be too much of a drastric change for her.

let us know how you go.

well......she woke at 11:30 last night crying, but settled herself down in just a minute - as I was getting out of bed, she got quiet, then for the next 20 or so min, every 5 min, we'd hear one cry, I'd get up, she'd get quiet.....then nothing.  Then at 6 this morning, she woke up crying, dh and I were working out, and stopped and waited, she got quiet.  5 min later, she cried again, just once, then was quiet til 7:15.  Her naps yesterday were ok - took her awhile to go down for the first one, but that's my fault since I rushed the wind down.  Once she did sleep, I woke her at 1 hr 15, second nap, woke her at 1 hr 15 too (she was WAY asleep for that one), so I don't know.

today's routine was way off (La Leche mtg at my house this am, missed am nap), but she still got 2.5 hrs of daytime sleep.  We'll see how tonight goes.  I'm trying the 2.5 hrs of daytime sleep all week and we'll see if there's any improvement.  It's just the utter randomness of the NWs that's got me puzzled.....

thanks for checking in with me!!  I was talking to my mom today and she said "whatever would you do without BW?"  and I said "I HAVE NO IDEA!!!!"

Hi Michelle!

you are right to stick with a certain time for naps this week and see if you need to increase or decrease sleep time.  i suspect the crying relates to teeth.  our guys, just as teeth start to move (before you can see the white in the gums) tend to do this and i think i am crazy because there are no teeth, but then a few days/couple of weeks later, you get a white spot under the gum that explains it all.

i try (although it is hard) not to rush in when you get a single cry like that.  when i go in, they wake, when i stay out they seem to keep sleeping (and the cry seems to be in sleep).

hugs , keep up the good work and keep us posted.

Thanks for the hugs ladies!  We had 2 more NWs last night...one at 1:45 and another at 3.  The first one, I waited, she screamed, then got quiet, so I thought "ahh...good", then she started screaming even louder and didn't stop, so I went in, she was on her tummy, but immediately flipped over to be picked up.  I rocked her for a bit, sang to her, put her back in her crib, and left.  She went to sleep.  Then at 3, screamed again, just once, I didn't get up, didn't go in, and she slept in til 8.  I seriously cannot figure her out.

I thought it was teeth, but the random NWs have been going on for almost a month now.  Shes napping now, I'll wake her at 1 hr 15, thats what I do in the afternoon too, we'll keep it up and hopefully see some improvement soon.  I'm feeling fairly incompetent as a mom at the moment.

don't get discouraged Michelle... it seemed to us like ds was teething on and off for 6 weeks, from mid december until 10 days ago.   sometimes teething seems like the wrong answer becuase you think it can't go on that long, but their little bodies are so busy growing in so many ways that we can just never know.  you are doing the right things - keep up the GREAT work, and dont' be so hard on yourself.

other thing at her age could be Separation Anxiety - i think we are starting to see a bit of that here too and it seems worse during the night.  we had dd wake during the night last night in a wailing cry - all she wanted was someone to cuddle her for a few minutes and she went right back down.     she may just need to know you are there - and i am off right now while they nap to find some more info on SA to make sure we do the right things.

hugs hugs hugs to you - hang in there - it will get better.

Oh Michelle, don't be discouraged - you are a great mum!  It's a stage a lot of LOs go thorugh I think. We are getting random NWs right now too - think it's a bit of SA plus teething plus all the physical develoment.... ::) ::)

thanks ladies!  It's the lack of sleep that feeds the feeling of inadequacy, I'm sure.

I think now there may be developmental whatnot in the works - when I went in to get her up from her am nap, she was already up - standing up that is, she'd pulled herself up and was peering over the side of the crib waiting for me with a big smile on her face.  That's the first time she's done that!

So, combined with marathon teething, too much day sleep, and developmental change, I guess I should't be so surprised at the random NWs.....and yes, she's got a bit of SA too, so we've been working on that during the day.  *sigh* I guess she's just got a lot going on right now.

Oh Michelle!  Please do not feel inadequate!  If you are inadequate for your dd having random NWs then I am inadequate for not being able to get my ds to nap more than 45 minutes....AND having random NWs... What do ya say to that, HUH???????

{{{HUGS}}} hon!!!  Very cool on Abby pulling herself up!!  (She's a step ahead of H now!!)

If it's teething -you mentioned you give her Tylenol, have you tried Motrin?  Infant Motrin lasts for 8 hours while Tylenol is only 4 hours (I think Anne told me that ages ago)...

Love the Motrin!!!  In fact, when ds had a NW last night (after 30 minutes of not going back to sleep) I gave him some Motrin and within 15 minutes he was calm enough for me to leave the room and go back to sleep  ;D

ok, it's getting worse.  Here's how last night went:

7:30 - Abby in bed...playing with Pink Bear...finally quiet (asleep I hope) by 8ish
10:30 - mommy turns out light to go to bed, Abby screams and won't stop.  mommy goes in, rocks a bit, back to sleep 10:50 (daddy sleeping)

11:30 - Abby screaming, mommy waits, screaming continues....I go in, change diaper, feed, (she's not really hungry, I'm just really tired), back to bed by midnight

12:30 - Abby screaming...mommy waits, screaming continues - mommy sends dh in...back to bed by 12:45

1:30 - Abby screaming...mommy waits, screaming gets louder...go in, Abby sitting up screaming, I lay her down, back to bed by 1:40

2:30 - Abby screaming...mommy screaming now...dh goes in, Abby sitting up screaming, dh lays her back down, back to bed 2:45

blissful quiet til 5:30

5:30 - Abby screaming....dh says "I think it's my turn" I do not correct him, goes in, Abby sitting up, dh lays her down, back to bed 5:45

blissful quiet til 7:30 - all of us up for the day.

I can honestly say this is the worst night in Abby's short little life.  Took her to the dr today, as she woke at 7:30 sounding very congested (thought it was just from the crying and lack of sleep), but took her temp and she had a slight fever.  Dr checked her, lungs clear, ears clear, fever very slight....but gave her a prescription for Albuteral just in case.  She missed her morning nap, but is now sleeping.

So here's my dilemma - it looks like it's a massive combo of stuff - teething (I am switching to Motrin now....), congestion, developmental issues, and day sleep.  So what do I do?  I hate to limit day sleep if she needs more sleep due to the congestion and teething.  Should I just wait til she feels better?  Also, if she has a night from hell like last night, should I reduce A time and up nap time the next day?  I'm afraid I'm just causing her to be more and more OT which is leading to more NWs.....help!!!

thanks for the support ladies!
Michelle

Random dumb question - have you tried offering water when she wakes at all?  How much does she get during the day?  (This is my new kick... Latest round of NW's were reduced by none other than H2O)

haven't tried water...but did think of that (knowing your previous post...), she gets about 8 oz water, 4 oz soy milk, and 3 (sometimes 4) bfs a day.....

Other trend I noticed with your night last night is she seemed to go down easier when it was DH.  If SA is contributing, arm him with a sippy cup of water and send him in.  I know you're a SAHM and he works, but it would be easier for all of you if she goes down easier.  And make sure you cuddle her extra before going to bed.

My personal observations on sleep time as it relates to NW's.  You never really recover those lost hours.  Once they're gone, they are gone.  Now that our LO's are older, they do bounce back better from lost sleep when they are younger.  Her naps may be a little longer, but I'd keep them about the same time, maybe 15-30 min. sooner if she seems particularly tired and don't let them go more than one sleep cycle past normal.  E.g. she normally sleeps 1:30, don't let her go more than 2:15.  With no more than a total of 1 hr than normal.
Btw- this is based on my own experience and having to rely on nanny logs to see the best way of tweaking her routine.

HTH!

Oh dear Michelle that does sound like a rough night!

I agree with Alissa - what I do if we have had a night like that is try and do naps as per usual, maybe slightly earlier if she seems tired, but I don't let her sleep longer than usual - (ie wake her after 1.5hrs or whatever we usually do) and put her to bed earlier if posssible so that she makes up any extra sleep with night time sleep rather than naps - I worry that she will get used to sleeping more in the day and less at night otherwise.  But again this is just based on my own experience with one LO ....

I hope it was a one-off  :-*

well, last night was better - only 3 NWs, and one she handled on her own!  Thanks for the feedback on how to handle naps after a bad night.  I kept her day sleep to 2.5 hrs yesterday - even though I know she would have slept longer and went with a 30 min earlier bedtime, and last night was definitely better.  She's still pretty congested, but in a good mood.  The second time she woke, she was having trouble breathing, so I gave her some more meds and rocked for a bit til they kicked in, and then put her down, she went right back to sleep.  No sitting up issues last night.

I'll keep day sleep at 2.5 today as well, and maybe the earlier bedtime and we'll see what the night brings.

Alissa - I meant to ask you - how much liquid does MJ get during the day?  I've been trying to up Abby's  bit since she's sick

Michelle,

I am so glad last night was a bit better.  It is so hard when they are sick - nothing is right when they are sick.   Hang in there!

Our new sippy cup doesn't have ounce markers, but if I had to hazard a guess, I'm thinking between 6 - 8 oz.  We keep our home very warm and the air has been pretty dry, so I think that increases her water intake.  During the night she takes between 1-3.  one night it was 4 oz.

well....good news...despite being sick, she's only had 1 NW each of the past 2 nights - both times before we had actually gone to bed.  She has gotten up an hour early, but I can deal with that.  I think the worst of the cold is over, though she's not completely back to herself.  I'm still limiting day sleep and extending her A time a bit, so we'll see how that goes as she recovers....thanks for all the support.

Alissa - since she's been sick, I've upped her liquid intake, so I'll try to keep that up a bit as she recovers in case that's part of the issue.

Wow, have just read all these posts and feel like I'm reading a diary of our past month!! So reassuring to hear someone else has had a dream baby go a wee bit wonky at nights. Can anyone tell me what the advice is re the naps.. are we better to extend the morning A time, have a longer AM nap and then slowly phase out the afternoon nap or do we try to cut AM nap shorter and have the longer PM nap? Our teething has also been going since xmas when Lily got 4 top teeth at once... with the same NW problems I can only think we are getting more but they have never caused her to wake before... do the eye teeth cause more trouble?

TIA!!!
Sheree

I'm happy to report that we've now had 3 nights in a row with no NWs!!!!  Thanks for all your great support.

Sheree - I ended up extending the morning A time and cutting the morning nap short.  Thats what was recommended on the 2 to 1 nap transition info (under naps - 10 -11 mos old sleep gone wonky?), so her morning nap is now an hour, her afternoon nap is 1.5 hrs.  Our new routine is  a bit like this:

e - 7:30 (wakes between 7 and 7:30
A - solids at 8:30
S - 10:30/11 (3.5 hrs after wake up, but I do a LONG 30 min winddown - mostly quiet play til 10 min before)

E - 11:30/12 (I wake her at the 1 hr mark)
A - solids at 12:30
S - 2:30/3 (3 hrs after wake up)

E - 4/4:30 (1.5 hr, I wake her) solids snack upon waking (we cut this bf out)
A - solids at 6
7 - start bedtime routine, bf and to bed by 7:30

That seems to be working for her...I do think shes still teething, so we're sticking with the Motrin before bed.  Her cold is mostly gone, so I don't think that's an issue any more.

Fantastic thanks heaps Michelle - will let you know how we go :-) Nothing early hours last night but awake at 9:30 and 10:30 so fingers crossed today!!! She had a morning nap of 1 hr 50 mins yesterday and then refused her afternoon nap  -BUT she managed to get thru the afternoon ok. I think sometimes when she gets grizzly I assume its that shes tired but I could well be wrong and she can probably handle the longer awake time...

Thanks again!!!
