The distracted phase
« on: February 13, 2006, 15:39:59 pm »
Yep...it has happened. He was 6 months old y'day and his nursings are driving me crazy. I basically have to nurse him in hte dark. Any sound or sight distracts him- TV, window, the dogs, his sister, DH, the sounds from the kitchen, magazine/book, etc. And of course he thinks the boob will follow as he swings his head around to take a look. I can usually distract him for a few minutes by playing with his hand. The idea of a toy or nursing necklace doesn't work....b/c he wants those in his mouth (at the same time) as his food supply. I know this will pass....but its driving me crazy. And FORGET nursing in public- which we had been pretty good at.

I can soooo relate.  We're over the worst I think, but we still have to be careful.  Nursing in public at this stage is almost embarassing!  My abilities to cover myself discretely are adequate at best to begin with.  lol

My strategy now is that when he yanks away, I keep him off for a few minutes until he realizes how hungry he is and then we try again.  It works sometimes.

Oh, what we do for our los!

 :D ;) :D

Oh poor you! It does get better! I found that with my DS other people were the biggest distraction (did I say were? I mean still  ;) )

Jodie's advice is spot on I don't try and force DS back on I let him do what he wants, he soon realises what he is missing!

Hope it get better soon and perceiver!

I'm not sure how big he is but I experimented with feeding on the move! We managed to walk around the house while I gave a guided tour! He was so taken by the novelty that it seemed to work bizarrely. You could also use a sling so it's less easy for him to turn his head.

Eat already!!  That's how I feel at least.  It is a very frusterating time.  In public I'm down to a burp cloth that I just cover myself w/ as he pops off every 30 seconds.  I tend to use a changing room or the car now just out of frusteration.  Hang in there, it's worth it. ;)

How long does this last? I feel like I am spending all day trying to get him to eat. Not to mention he thinks that he shoudl eat all night to make up for lost time! GRRRR.

Just wanted to join in on this - my LO turned 6 months yesterday and has been like this for weeks.  Not only that, I have just had to post on the BF board as he is so impatient he will only take foremilk (gets bored at hindmilk stage) and consequently he has masses of wind, wants to feed again within 2 hours and my supply is dwindling because he is not staying on long enough ! Jbepko I had to laugh at your comments re nursing necklace etc., my LO is the same, wants his hand/my shirt/his bib all in his mouth at the same time as the boob, then when he is bored after 5 minutes and milk not flowing fast enough he starts blowing bubbles - very messy ! ::)  It's such a pity about the BF in public too, I enjoyed it so much when I could just tuck him in under my clothes..... So do they grow out of this phase then or will they always find other things more interesting than BF from now on?  ???

They will grow out of it, I promise. I'm sorry I can't be more specific. I found that once Sam became mobile he felt more in control of his world and felt less need to assert his independence during breastfeeding. Now it's a struggle to get him to stop! Lots of babies have this phase for only a short time. Make sure you do pump to keep up your supply if you very concerned about lack of feeds. Think of it as a positive sign of his curiosity and intelligence. Every time he looks around he is making more connections in his little brain and growing cleverer. (OK so perhaps that's not much compensation ;))
