some feeding-times advice please
« on: October 25, 2013, 19:23:51 pm »
DD2 was jaundiced at birth,so i'm trying to keep the
feeds regular.i feed on demand during the night-which
was just under3hrs last night.
my question is really about daytime feeds i guess.
i feed when she wakes,eg 6am,then generally she wants
to feed again 1 hr later.but for the next 2or sometimes
3feeds,eg at 10am,1pm,4pm,i have to wake her.
good?bad?setting myself up 4 nap trouble down the line?
wwyd?!

Personally I would feed on demand and just try to separate the E from S as much as possible when they are this tiny. Elliotte feeds so long that her A time other than feeds is pretty short and naps are hit or miss. I let her sleep as much as 2.5/3 hours if she is having a good nap day, generally the rest of the day will be short naps but oh well! How big is your DD now? E gained fast right off the bat so I was not so worried with her going longer between feeds.

At that age she did mostly 3 hours but sometimes 3.5/4...bigger stretches at night, by 4 weeks she dropped all night feeds entirely so during the day she now does 2.5/3 hours to fit 5 feeds in (her doing, seems to be what she needs!). But if she was acting hungry after 1.5/2 hours I just went ahead and fed.

How is the jaundice now?  If it's improved, I would imagine that you could probably leave her a bit to see whether she'll wake of her own accord.  What does the HV/HCN say?

I personally think if she's still jaundiced that you should wake her. Unless she just fell asleep ;).

Would a diaper change rouse her? Once I knew DD2 would go back to sleep after a feed I used to do that for her DF even if she was only wet.

I'd keep waking during the day for now until you've. Had some medical advice. Does she wake on her own to feed at night? If not I might think about trying to rouse her at least once on top of a df.
