Should i start Jude on solids at 5 months
« on: October 31, 2005, 10:23:01 am »
Im unsure whether to start solids or not.  Ds will be 5 months in a few days, he weighs approx 171b. He is drinking between 38-40 ounces.  The last couple of nights he has been waking every few hours, this morning he was awake at 5am and i ended up feeding him at 6am and he had 9 ounces.  I cant up his liquids as i think 40 ounces is enough isnt it??

:?: So should i start him on baby rice?

:?: When shall i give it?

 :?: How often?

:?: When do i add fruit or veg?

Im so confused by it all and im scared that he will end up constipated or something and night wakings will become worse

Please can someone help me take the next steps

He currently feeds at

7am  11 ounces

11am 9 ounces

3pm 9 ounces

7pm 11 ounces

I dropped the dreamfeed as he was waking constantly with tummy ache, since dropping it the night wakings disappeared but have now returned.

Thanks to anyone who can help me :)

Hi Kelly,

I know how you feel, when I started DD on solids I was very confused and had her on cereal for way too long beofre introducing veg/fruit!

Anyway, I started DD on Baby Oats at 4 1/2 months.   I didn't start with rice b/c I didn't want her to be constipated and she is now 6 months and LOVES solids.  I would think that your LO is ready considerdering how much milk he is taking, Sophie was the same and the same weight as your LO when we started.

I gave DD a week to get used to eating off the spoon then I started incorperating solids as a meal, 2 TBL in themorning (when she woke up) and 2 tbs at 'supper'(right after her catnap).  After a week I upped her cereal to 3 tablespoons at 'supper'.

After almost 4 weeks of cereal I started to feed her a lunch time meal and used this meal to introduce a new veggie every 2 days then moved on to introducing a new fruit every 2 days.  Her favourite out of everything is still peas  !  I probably waited too long to introduce fruit & veggies, not that it really matters now though....

Also DH and I do not have any allergies so I have not been weary of feeding DD anything new.  She now eats all sorts of foods and loves Solids!!!  She has also been sleeping through the night, 7PM to 6AM with no Dreamfeed   :D for 6 weeks!!!

Hope that helps...
Richelle

I know a lot op people are opposed to starting solids before six months but I started at four months and I am happy I did. By the amount of milk intake I would say that maybe he is ready; try and see is he will take food from a spoon. ( I think there is a thread on whether your baby is ready for solids in the weaning forum). I have a comprehensive eating plan if you would like it; it lists the quantities, the times etc............... for the introduction of cereal, fruit and veg etc... I have shared it with several mums and many of them have found it helpful. Let me know if you would like it.

Hi notenoughshelfspace - could you send me a copy as well? (you're prob sick of doing this by now) My email is alqtruong@yahoo.com.au - my dd is 4.5 mths old and has started to wake more often of a night out of hunger - I'm hoping that starting rice cereal or the like may improve matters! Thanks! :D
