LO won't go--any cures for constipation?
« on: September 02, 2008, 18:17:11 pm »
Please move this if it's in the wrong place--I don't usually come for feeding advice.

Sophie is 1 year old. Today she ate:

breakfast: weetabix, apple, orange
lunch: broccoli, carrotts,
tea: tomato, grapes, 1 small sausage, small piece of toast.

She drank a small bit of water.

No result for the past 3 days.

I am trying to stuff her with as much friut and veg and water as I can, without depriving her of all protein and carbohydrate. It's always been a problem, or at least after I stopped BF, but before I could always get her going by something like the above. Now we've had nothing since her birthday party 3 days ago. And while I was not as good on that day, every other day she's up to the gills in fibre, as far as I can manage.

Is there something else I can try? Even those blooming prune yoghurts don't seem to do the trick.

It's so bad that she screams in pain when going, even when it is soft, so I think she has a tear.

Grateful for any advice. TIA.

Ripe Pears used to work on DD when she was younger.  For some reason spinach tends to go right through her now though.  Tomatos are a great try as well.

Sorry I don't have more to offer but wanted to send some hugs!!

Maeve try boiling raisins for a few minutes to soften them, puree ( you can freeze the extra) and mix in natural yogurt. See if that does anything though I know you said you have given prune yogurt.

Keep her as hydrated as you can. Fiber can't work unless there's plenty of water in her system. Fruits with a high water content, like grapes and watermelon, can help with that if she isn't drinking much.

Hi Maeve-  check out this post on laxative foods.  third to last post is my recipe for getting things moving.  Used it 3 times so far & have 'results' in about 3-5 hours upon using.  Let us know how it goes.

Can you get the organix range in ireland?  They do some goodies fruit bars (date and banana) - they get things moving for us within a couple of hours!

Thansk for the advice--and the link. I haven't seen organix, but I'll have a look out.

The minx hates drinking--she's only just come around to bottles, and I think the worsening co-incides with her liking milk, and drinking a pint a day as opposed to 12 or 14 oz. But I don't know if that could make so much difference.

I am trying to get her to drink water, diluted juice, but it's an uphill struggle.

I wouldn't mind but DS2 was almost a leaky tap in the bowel department (sorry TMI).

Maeve I am sure I have seen organix when I was home this Summer, prob in Tesco, we have it here so you should find it easily enough. They have a huge range of baby and toddler food.

Sorry if this is dense but you mentoned she loves milk by the pint.

Milk/diary is very constipating and like someone else said fibre is not overly helpful unless you've got water in her to help moisten things up ... could you imagine.

Things gf's have tried is the white grape juice (supposed to be friendly than prunes).  Orange juice (at a time like this do no dilute).  Drastically cut diary during the hard times IYKWIM.  Here the hospitals have some magic little packet, tiny thing of consensed fruits.  Worked like a peace for me 7 days post pardum within hours.  Perhaps a call to a nurse or nursing home even to see what they use for their patience.

If she does have a tare water will be one of her best frieds I'd think.

So sorry for your little one.

Oh not by the pint, but about 18 to 20 oz per day, as opposed to 12 to 14. I am giving her water, but she's not taking much. I've not tried undiluted juice, mind you, although I was thinking of it. Maybe I will now. She's had a feed of apricots and porridge for breakfast, no result yet.

She is off yoghurt and off cheese, she used to eat 1 yoghurt per day.

What's a tare?
