anyone use straw sippy's instead of regular ones for over 1 years of age. Just curious. My 1 year and 1 month old is still drinking milk out of bottles and uses sippy cups for water. A speech therapist (not for my children), told me that straw sippys are better for developing talking skills.

Just curious if anyone has baby's that drink there milk during the day from straw cups.

Yup.  She had trouble getting the hang of regular sippies, no trouble with straws.  We still use them as she's a bit of a klutz, and Mark the cat likes to tip over milk glasses.

Both of mine prefer the straw cup.  The ones with the valve are not liked as much as just the regular straw in a cup with a lid.

My son drank from a straw...his speech therapist suggested it.  It uses different muscles in the mouth which is good for speech.  It did take ds a while to grasp the concept of a straw.

We use them.  Might have helped a lot with speech.  Guess we won't ever really know.

Question for you ladies. I've tried every sippy cup and my son refuses all, but the Nubby one. I'd prefer him to use the straw style, but he doesn't grasp/understand what to do... Stupid question really, but how do I help him grasp the idea of using a straw?! I've tried showing him countless times, but it's like the light switches hasn't turned on yet for that skill. He either just puts his open mouth on it and gets confused as to what to do or just tries to chew on the straw and playes with it.

He just turned 17 months btw.

just food for thought, I read somewhere that some doctors/dentists have asked the moms to stop giving straw cups due to tooth decay. although, not sure what the difference is from sipping on a sippy cup. Than of course speech therapists talk about straw cups being better.

I have my own set of problems. Chayse turned 1 August 13th. off and on since before one I've been trying to get her to drink milk other than the bottle. She will drink water in ANY sippy cup we give her. My doctor said I would probably have to tough it out for a day or two. So today, I tried. I had milk in a straw sippy and a regular sippy. I also tried strawberry milk later on in the day. She will just refuse until it's her nap time and she's so upset and tired that I give in and give her milk before her nap. this morning she didn't even have a morning bottle and went from the time she woke up 6:20am until her nap which was around 10am ish when I gave her the bottle. She just outright refuses and will just act fussy off and on all morning. I also tried this afternoon, but no luck. Than came 2nd nap (cat nap) at around 3:30/3:45pm where she had a bottle. She's had some supper and I've been trying milk in sippy cups to no avail. She would rather just suffer and be fussy I guess. So far, I haven't giving in. She's been up from her cat nap since 4:40pm and it's 6:30pm now. Weird. Been trying off and on for a long time it seems (2 months about). I even gave it a big LONG break. I didn't want it to interfere with naps today so that is why I gave in when it was nap time. She would of gotten angry and refused anyways most likely. I'm running out of ideas.

B actually did much better with a straw than with a sippy so that is what we have used ever since he was about 13 months.

jaedagal...my son also had trouble with a straw.  I would fill the straw with water or milk and put my finger on the top so the liquid wouldnt spill out.  Then give it to him, it doesnt teach them to suck it just lets them know you can drink from it.  well...I guess it will give them a start on how to suck

legend_018...I also had trouble getting ds to drink milk when he came off the bottle...I used the straw trick, he loved it...also I would put milk into a Dunkin Donuts cup, he loved to drink from that...just like daddy.  If she can drink out of a straw you could get milk in a "juice box" it is quite expensive but to start, it might work...something new and cool to drink out of.  If on the off chance you have a trip comming up...thats how I got ds off the bottle.  He never even missed it and he loved his baba.

See, I had heard it the other way.  That dentists recommended straws because then the liquid bypasses the teeth and goes straight down your throat, therefore causing less tooth decay.   ???

My lo has always used a straw sippy, he just could never figure out the spout sippies.  I taught him much like the pp.  With the straw sippies that still had a stopper I would suck some water into the straw and then give him the cup.  He still had to suck a little to get the liquid out of the straw, just not as much as to get it out completely on his own.  These are the ones we use:

For out and about- http://www.amazon.com/Nuby-oz-Mega-Sipper-Care/dp/B000LK6KOO/ref=pd_bbs_4?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1221352750&sr=8-4

For at home- http://www.amazon.com/Sesame-Street-3-Straw-Cups/dp/B000IG0RAY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1221352797&sr=1-4

On a side note I read a great suggestion about straws in my Parents magazine.  When you go out to eat and they give you a kids cup the straw is always too long and so the kid has to tip the cup and then makes a mess.  So, carry a couple bendy straws in your diaper bag/purse (they fit wonderful in a travel toothbrush holder) and use them instead.  I tried it last week and it worked great!  :)

She has 1 straw cup, gave it to her after saw her slurping spaghetti, so I knew how to explain it to her (she had had trouble with straws before).  We only use it occasionally, as she likes to dump things out of it.

Straw cups here also.  Or even the ones with the sports tops on them.

DS has really only had straw cups.  LOVES them.  He never really got the hang of a regular sippy.  And I read the article on straw cups and dentists - they are recommended because the straw usually sits back behind the teeth so less of the fluid hits the enamel ;)

We love the Foogo cups.  (They have one with a straw.) It is heavy for little ones, but they do quickly get the hang of the fact it is heavy.
