Title: Do i feed solids immediately after bottle feed ?
Post by: momofella-grace on April 26, 2006, 10:28:05 am
Hi my baby has just gone on to a bottle after she failed to gain weight breast feeding. She is taking 8 ounces per feed, do i feed solids immediately after or maybe wait an hour? Should i give less milk so she has room for the solids. She is underweight so needs to gain a few pounds. Thanks Lisax

I am certainly no expert, first time mom and figuring out as I go but I think they say to do solids after so they take as much formula as they want (which is the most important right now).  I would not limit her formula intake.  At first she will not take that much solids but as she gets use to it she will take more.  Our lo are the same age.  I started solids about 5 weeks ago and she didn't take much for the first couple of weeks and now she loves it and has increase her intake.   I give her solids a half an hour to an hour after.  She gets it 2 times a day right now.

Good luck!

Hi there,
I started my LO at 6 mos and she is now 7.5mos and eats 3 meals a day, has four bottles of 6 oz each. She wouldn't take her solids after the bottle so I feed her first, then bottle. Sometimes the bottle gets split into two ie half after eating, the other half at her nap time. Our Paediatrician said that was just fine, so long as she was happy!! She has gained very well..HTH

My daughter goes to a feeding clinic and they recommend bottle first, then solids. The reasoning is that the bottle is still their main source of sustinance; solids are supplemental still.

At this age i would do the bottle first then wait an hour to give solids so they are hungry enough to eat some. Keep bottle intake the same as this is still your babies most important intake at this age.

Thanks for your replies i think because she was so hungry (my milk had failed and i didnt realise) she is making up for lost time by consuming alot of milk i think things will level out and she will make some room for solids. Im going to try feeding solids an hour after and see what happens. Thanks lisa x

when we started solids we gave the bottle first as he couldn't wait , then gradually gave half bottle first then solids and offered the rest of the bottle to wash down with. he soon refused bottle first as solids were so good , we continued giving bottle after to wash down with . he then started dropping milk feeds , aroun 10 months
