Title: night sleep a mess
Post by: babybarr on December 07, 2014, 06:17:25 am
Before half term (last wk in Oct) the boys would go down to bed and be asleep for 7ish wake around 3am have a bottle and go back to sleep till around 6.15/30am.

We ditched the bottle, they were poorly, they're cutting teeth and now they typically wake more than once each or they wake once for over an hr. They are also up between 5 and 5.30am. Add a 6yr waking or being woken into the mix and we're at our wits end.

We try to limit the nap to 1.5hrs but they sometimes have longer but equally sometimes sleep less.

Here is their routine
Wake between 5 and 6
Nap 12.15/12.30 for about 1.5hrs
Bed 6.30  but asleep by 7pm

Really need help!  They've been on this routine since about beg Sept. They're grumpy if they're tired and J in particular hates being woken from his nap.

If they're teething, can you try a Dream Med? Med for pain at bedtime and then again partway thru the night? Nurofen/ibuprofen is supposed to last 6-8 hours.

Laura they've always been low sleep needs haven't they?  Even so I would rule out overtiredness (with pain meds as Deb suggested to rule out discomfort) by bringing BT a touch earlier for a few days, maybe 30 mins.  Only suggesting that as nights seem to be 10.5h which would always be OT here.  But then if no joy perhaps consider moving their nap later by 30 mins or so and keeping at 1.5h and see if that helps shift WU time later.  What do you think?

J practically did 11hrs last night but from a 6.30pm sleep so up at 5.30am - but mainly cos H woke him.  H up for well over an hour again at 3.45am  I gave him a bottle too but it didn't make any difference.

They're likely to have  some earlier nights anyway this week as I have a show at work.

Hmm yeah the fact that they are taking so long to go to sleep at night seems more OT than UT with those pesky NW.  I agree to try bedtime earlier.  Here's hoping xx  Also, the dream meds worked well for us...I mean as well as it can be with a kid waking between 5-6 a.m.  ::)

Things are just awful. I don't know why. Earlier bt hasn't particularly helped but has given even earlier ew.

They def are ot now. I'm exhausted as is dh.

Day the same. Molars through. Although I can see canine bumps... I'll be glad when the teeth are all through. Thursday they fell asleep on the lounge floor. H sat up and j flat on his back with no dummy!

Canines have caused havoc here for the last couple of months laura, I'd bet that is their issue.

Hugs honey x

I think we are just starting the canines here but hard to tell sometimes what the issue is as she has picked up one virus after another since October (currently we have strep though!). She ended up having a 2.5 hr nap yesterday because DD2 was sick and she actually slept until 7 am with only a brief wake up at 5:45. Which is totally backwards for miss lsn.

Canines....bet they're your culprit. We had such messy sleep before they cut. Plus your in another wonder week which doesn't help ::)

Lots of hugs, all the advice you have so far is awesome x

We've had about 3 months of canine chaos... And we only have the top two! Slowest teeth ever to cut!

So I'm back. J is not too bad although being woken by h. But h is a nightmare. No sign of any canines yet. H will wake at least once for over an hour and then usually a second time too. J if he wakes himself will often do the same. I've been letting them sleep longer for their nap as they've been wanting it but maybe I should cap the nap? Just they HATE being woken.

How long a nap?  If they are LSN you may need to wake them even if they don't like it yo preserve your nights x

They've been having nearly 2hrs but I woke them at 1hr 30mins today. They were previously only sleeping 1.5hrs only on their own so it's surprising they've wanted to nap longer yk?

Do you think the longer nap is just a result of them making up for the nw's? I hate waking E but I have to cap her nap to avoid nw & ew (down to 45 min at home and an hour at daycare as she seems more tired there).

Heidi I know you're probably right...sigh.
So last night was marginally better and they went to sleep really quickly. Will see what the next few days brings.

Fx things are looking up! I know nap capping really sucks, esp when they are taking nice long ones...but I am not a morning person so prefer she sleeps then.

Awful night with h again. He woke j who had filled his nappy anyway. But then h was also up at the crack of dawn. I'm losing my patience now!

Stick with shorter nap and hope it sorts itself the next few days???

So j pretty much sttn but h short napped yesterday and still woke twice and has been up since 5am. At a loss. He also woke j this morning so we're in for yet another grumpy morning.

Hugs Hun, remember 14 mths or so is a massive developmental leap, we had lots of sleep issues resurface around this age with molars too. Give the shorter nap a few more days, or try a later one x
