Please don't shout at me....
« on: April 05, 2008, 01:09:08 am »
So, DS loves riding his trike. My sister was over today and was like, "He should be wearing a helmet in case he falls and also to get him used to it now, so when he is older and really biking he'll know that it is part of safe biking." I agree that he should wear a helmet when he begins on a bigger bike (with trainer wheels) like next spring, but this trike is the kind that is very low to the ground and doesn't tip as it has the wide set "hot wheels" sort of wheels, it is by Fisher Price. Does he really need to wear one now?  ???

Please excuse my ignorance, I plead "old school!"  :-[ ::) :D  DS hates hats generally but didn't mind wearing a helmet when we went skating at the arena, but when we took him on the pond, we didn't have him wear one. Our summers are hot, hazy and humid 30+C, he'll sweat in that thing.

I also told DH that we have to start wearing our helmets when we bike to set an example now that he is older. Promise we will, they are sitting in our closet ready. I just feel a helmet for a small trike is a bit OTT.  :-\  Am I wrong?  Please be truthful.  I agree that next year when he rides his "real bike" (we have it already as it is hand-me down from our Godson) of course he will wear his helmet.  It is a city by law here BTW for biking, skateboarding and Rollerblading.

Appreciate all comments and opinions.

If you don't wanna give him a helmet now because the bike he is riding is 1)really low to the ground and won't tip or 2) you don't take him on hour long bikerides though hazardous city streets... I would say not worry about it... But!  I would also try to make the Helmet he will be wearing a kind of reward for being able to ride a big boys bike... you know you can say he can pick it out himself or put whatever stickers on his he likes.  Really let him know that a helmet is what smart big boys do and he might find that the helmet becomes a fun thing for him...

heck, he could have a few different ones!  To match his outfits? ;) ok maybe not but it's a thought, eh??? :)

Dh  and I were just talking about this as well and weren't sure.  So I'm just marking my spot.
Where do you even buy helmets for a 2.5 YO all I've seen is 3+?

Thanks Heather, that is a great idea with the stickers etc for next year... ;D

No we don't ride on busy streets, just our driveway, sidewalk/footpaths, back patio and the park etc..

Actually when I look at toysrus website, they always show pics of LO's wearing helmets with bikes but not in the trike shots.

Maybe my sis it OTT! Well she is really, we've know that since she was born LOL! Her concern was that he does go fast.

Now to get me to wear my helmet.....just kidding.....I will, I will, I hate them though.  :P

THX

ps. Stacy just saw your post, thx, was hoping you would respond sensibly (or what I wanted to hear ;)) and you did! LOL! :-*
Lorrie, toysrus have them for toddlers 3 and up, but would fit Aedric.

Maren wears a helmet on any ride-on toy.  Her daycare started it and well, if I could get away with wrapping her in bubble wrap I would.  ::)  I guess I'm OTT too, but I just think it's one less battle I'll need to fight as time goes on.  :)

yes Noah wears a helmet if he is outside on his trike. really all the kids on our cul-de sac do, so thats just the expectation! honeslty, I think it is a good thing to establish at this age. If we are inside and he is riding his inside very low plastic trike or ride on toy then I'm fine with no helmet.

outside there is more cement and ramps, sidewalks etc---he is too courageous and will become even more so once he has really mastered the trike and is chasng down all of the other kids. so helmet it is.

as an adult. pls wear a helmet while biking---its just not worth the risk to your brain or spinal cord.

Ds wears one on his little Iggle Piggle trike. We did it b/c a) he's already fallen off it a couple of times (he purposely crashes into the garage doors b/c he likes the noise it makes - our driveway slopes a bit, so he gets quite a speed up first ::)) and b) I wanted to be consistent with ride-on toys = wearing a helmet. So, yes that does mean he wears it indoors ;)

We just went to a specialist bike shop and had him fitted for one. It does look to big for him atm, but as long as the inside fittings are snug, that doesn't matter

We're a helmet wearing family.  Jalyn just got her trike and she knows the rules... helmet and shoes!  And, so far, we're just riding it in the kitchen  ::)  And she's not doing so much pedaling and we're doing the pushing.  We figure, good habits start young.... Just my 2  ;)

Andrew wore a helmet when he got a trike, but it was mainly because the summer he started riding his trike was also the summer we got the bike trailer and he needed one in that.  So it just carried over.  Who knows if that's why, but we don't have any fights about getting him to wear a helmet now.

This will be J's first summer trying out the trike.  He hates things on his head too, but would walk on coals to be like his brother. ::)

Oops, Leorah doesn't wear one either  :-[ To tell the truth I can't face a battle, we have a hard time getting her to wear wellies or gloves so a helmet would be a world war. I was presuming she'd wear one on a 2 wheeler and that by then we could hopefully reason with her the "why". Thinking about it she should probably be wearing one for her every waking hour, she's probably safest when she's on her trike and not climbing anything lol  ;D

We're the opposite here.  DD insist on wearing her helmet when riding on the trike.  Apparently Barney says that you must wear a helmet when riding a bike so I had to buy her one along with elbow pads and knee pads.
