what would you do? A nap question
« on: September 08, 2006, 13:23:26 pm »
I put dd (almost 11mo) down for her nap as usual at 1.30. At 2.30 she was still playing in her crib, babbling away and getting a little on the energetic side. I went in a couple times to try and get her to lie down but she would bounce back up, so I left her. Once she started moaning I did some wi/wo. Now it's 3.20 and she's been down for around 5 minutes and I think has fallen asleep. (I bf-ed her as usual at 3, normally the time she wakes up ::))

Would you have done differently? When would you wake her up?

TIA
Katie

What's your "routine," Katie? Theron did this with his first nap the other day, and I realised that he could do 3.10 for his first A instead of the 2.50 I'd been sticking to. Could she be stretching her middle A? Theron's second nap is now between 2.30pm-3pm for 1.5 hours or so. Sometimes means only 3 hours before bed, but so far (touch wood) it doesn't seem to have affected his ability to sleep at night.

wake 6.30 - 7
nap 1 9.30 for 1 to 1.5 hrs
nap 2 1.30 for 45 mins to 2 hrs (depends on am nap it seems)
bed 7

and I can't pretend that's the last I hear from her until 6.30.

I was thinking that if today isn't a blip maybe I should start to shorten her am nap. Woke her at 4.30 today, so let's see what time I get her to sleep this evening. Theoretically it will only be 2.5 hr A time, which makes me nervous!

Hi Katie

If I were you I'd either shorten the am nap by cutting it back by 15 minutes every couple of days until she's going down well for her second nap (though if the nap gets much shorter the pm nap might need to be earlier) or I'd make the second nap later.  Which would work better for you?

I find that if I let ds sleep past 4 for his second nap, that will not go to sleep at night (8pm), so I wouldn't let her go too long for the afternoon nap.

This is my routine, which is working well (most days) and he does sleep thru the night (maybe 5 days of 7)

6:30 wake
9:30- 11 nap #1
3-4 nap #2
8 bed

I like it cause it keeps the 2nd and 3rd A times at 4 hours...

thanks for your replies, sorry, my notifications have been going funny and I only just found them!

So she's still fighting naps and I've come to a couple conclusions. We'll see what happens

got to get back to a "routine"
Lisi's got to get less snotty - poor thing can hardly breathe right now
got to start shortening the morning nap
can't let her sleep any later than 4
Less daytime sleep gave us better night time sleep (at least once, but I think yesterday was an extreme example - 45 mins nap total)

thanks for your ideas, it's good to compare notes! I know Lisi and her sleep goes in phases, some better, some worse but this does feel like it's time for a tweak. We've been on the same routine for a long time now.
