6.5 month old waking at night....
« on: February 20, 2007, 17:30:50 pm »
Hoping to get some suggestions. I am not sure whether I should just keep feeding my ds in the night when he wakes or try pat ssssh or p/u p/d. He really seems to be hungry when I go in. It's so hard to know for sure though.
His second nap sometimes falls around 2:30, but other times it's around 3:30 because we need to go and pick up my other ds from school.
He gets himself to sleep with little to no crying and usually wakes happy and chatting (except for at night)
Thanks in advance for your help!

How old is your child? 6.5 months
What’s his/her daily routine?
8:00am wake and breastfeed
8:30am take brother to school and do errands or go swimming
10:00am cereal and fruit (about 1/2 cup total)
11:00am breastfeed and nap 1 1/2 hours
12:30pm play, do errands
2:00pm breastfeed
3:00pm nap 1 hour
5:30pm cereal and veggies (about 1 cup total)
6:00pm bath
6:30pm breastfeed and bed
12:30am breastfeed (he wakes on his own for this)
5:00am breastfeed (he wakes on his own for this)
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed) Sometimes one side, sometimes both. Depends on whether he seems to want more.
How many wakes per night? 2
What’s your LO like when waking at night? cries quietly at first and then it gets louder. Can sometimes settle himself back to sleep.
How long is he/she up? As long as it takes to feed him - maybe 15 minutes.
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Crying
Or is it a mantra cry? Not sure
What have you tried to settle?? Up until now, just breastfeeding because he seems to hungry. He always eats on both sides.
What do you do for A time and how long is it? Jolly jumper, exersaucer, playing on floor, doing errands. Generally it is about 2-3 hours
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? He is teething, but this has been going on for a while now.
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? No.
Do they have a lovie? Yes. A knit blanket that he likes to nuzzle into.

When he eats at night, does he take a full feed both times?

Then I wonder if he's getting his 6 mo growth spurt a little late?? If he's taking full feeds and eating enthusiastically, then you're doing the right thing by feeding him.

Thanks! That's good to hear.
I gave him a bit of lunch today as I'd only been doing breakfast and supper.
He just started solids about 3 weeks ago and just loves them, so I thought a bit more can't hurt.
The other thing I thought of is that perhaps his daytime feeds aren't as long as they could be. He gets distracted very easily while nursing, so I might try feeding him in his room a bit more often where he is less distracted.

That's a good idea - tanking up as much as possible helps too  ;D

If he is hungry you need to feed him.  I was just wondering if you could get away with only feeding him on one side during the night so he gets used to less calories at night?  I wouldn't want him to wake a 3rd time though if he was truly hungry, it was just a thought I had.....

That's something I've tried a few times and he always gets upset and seems to want more.
Last night was a great night.
He woke at 10:45pm (after going down at 7:00) and I let him fuss and he fell back to sleep within about 5 minutes.
Then he woke at 4:00am, and got upset quickly so I fed him.
I can totally deal with one waking!
Let's hope this continues!
Thanks for your suggestions!

Another good night.
Went to bed at 7:00pm
Woke at 10:45, got himself back to sleep.
Woke at 3:30, I fed him.
Woke at 7:00am.
I wonder if he'll stop waking at 10:30ish soon?
