Toddler activity ideas while pg
« on: September 11, 2007, 08:51:05 am »
I've just been told I have SPD, so am in loads of pain. I can't walk very far and there is no way I can run around with Shay. I am taking him to the park this afternoon but it is all I can do to walk there. I can't do that everyday. I could really do with some ideas of activities I can do with him, he's 2 1/2, around the house or in the garden. We don't have any garden toys as it is a small garden, just a bowl of water and some plastic toys.

I do get my parents to take him out when they aren't working, I'm just worried he is getting bored and not having enough time running around and using his energy up.

TIA :-*

HI Faye
you have my every sympathy - I had SPD with both my boys and it's not fun!
Anyway - here's just one suggestion for you - hopefully other people will have their brains in gear and can contribute more!  ::)

Big bucket of water - big paintbrush (wallpaper paste brush even better!) Let Shay paint the house, path, patio, decking ;D
Keeps Toby quiet for ages!

I blew bubbles a lot. Tyler loved chasing them so he got lots of running around time. We also got him a sandbox. He spent HOURS in there. I got a long stick so I could sit up on a normal chair and use it to help him move stuff around and kinda play along with him.

Ds still spends ages at the kitchen sink with a load of plastic toys, he knows how to use the taps and the plug, and is VERY clear that he's not to touch the hot tap.

Can you manage a wander around a garden centre? Ds loves going to our local one, and having 'afternoon tea' in the cafe ;)
Caroline :)

Does he like the bathtub?  On rainy days when DS needs to burn off some energy, I put him in the tub for a while with things that wouldn't usually be there like bowls, spoons, etc from the kitchen and he'll play away for a good half hour or so while I sit on a stool beside the tub (sometimes I even go in with him to play for a bit or other times he is so engrossed on his own that I can read beside him for a few minutes).  You could even make it "pool" time and let him wear swim trunks!
We have a large bin of rice that I put out on a cheap plastic shower curtain on the floor along with bowls, funnels, spoons, etc. and he enjoys playing in it and driving his cars through it.  IT's a bit messy but most spills get contained on the mat so I can just dump it back in when he's done.
Also started using these monthly discovery bins from this website over the past month or two that have been a hit...  http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/activites_for_2_s.html#AugustSensoryTub
