Any body else with a 7 month old that wakes at 430 am?
« on: November 07, 2012, 14:48:19 pm »
Hi all,

I'm at a lost at what to do with my daughter and her early wakings.  The time change didn't help but now we're back in the routine she keeps waking up earlier and earlier (and yes bedtime is always about the same time).  BAH!  Any ideas would be appreciated, here is our routine:

Babes awake at 440, we put the paci in, shsh pat for a bit and then hope she goes back to sleep... she doesn't.
get her out of bed at 6

E - 6am  breast milk
A - play with toys
E - 7am solid food
A - 730-815
S - 830- 1000 - put the fan on, read a story and change her diaper.  She goes to sleep without a fuss and always pretty much naps 1 1/2 hrs
E- breast milk at 10
A- walk, play, songs etc
E- 1130 solid food
A- 12 until 115 (i know she has long awake times but she doesn't sleep if i put her to bed earlier)
S - 120-3ish
E - 3 breastmilk
A - 310-5
E- 5 solid foods
A- play with papa, stories ,bath
E- feed at 645
S - in bed by 7pm
she feeds at 1030 at night and btw 2am-4am.  The 4 am feed might mean that she is ready to start her day.

i would love for her to sleep until 6am (at this point, even 530 would be good).

Any advice, things I should tweak with my routine?

Thanks in advance

We are going through this too. Nights keep getting shorter and shorter. Started 3 weeks ago. My daughter used to have 11-12 hr nights. She is waking between 5-530. It got better when we increased her A time but that didn't last long. So here we are on our 2nd week of 5ish wake ups. Im so lost at what to do. I feel bad pushing more A but I know the short night of sleep is effecting her. Hugs! You aren't alone.

I am also in the same situation! I have already upped his A to 3h15 but he is so fussy and has a really hard time staying up for so long! When I give in and put him down earlier he short naps and gives me early wakings. It is extremely difficult to up the A so much... I always feel like I am pushing it too far!
I guess this is a difficult time...

Thanks ladies!  it's good to know that I'm not the only one with a LO that likes to party EARLY in the morning.  This has been going on for over a month.  Have you thought that maybe it's diet related?  That's what i'm trying next.  I'm going to stop eating chocolate and see if that helps her sleep longer.

Hugs ladies.

Wee wet through a nasty NW phase around this age. Typically you get it because that am nap is too early in the day. I would work on gradually pushing that nap out closer to 9am and hopefully the EW will get more reasonable as you move her day. Maybe try 8.45 for a few days and see if she copes ok?

Your doing everything right In keeping her in her room in the dark to encourage her to sleep later :-*

Thanks Sara.  i will give that a go.  Today she woke up at 430.  I nursed her at 550 and she went back to sleep.  I didn't feed her at 430 b/c I feed her at 230.  I know she isn't hungry.  I'm going to wake her at 7 and put her down for a nap at 10.  hopefully tomorrow I can write that she slept until 6 (or 5 or 530). BAH!

Hugs, it does take time, I won't say how long we had EW for ;) but it does I,prove. Def work on pushing the first nap to 9 am. I found anything earlie in a lot of people's cases just reinforce the EW. :-* let me know how you all get on x

I'm having the same issue. My LO is 6 months. He began waking at 5am due to needing an A time extension but we did that and is doing 3hrs A time but now  I have to apop all his naps because he can't sleep through his jolts. ARGH.. And he's still waking up at 5am.

Can I join the club too!!! My son has been waking at 4.30/5am for several weeks now and I am tiiiiirrreeeed!

I'm beginning to think the trick is putting him down for naps later. H already does 3hr A time but maybe he can do 3hr 15mins. I'm going to try that today. First nap is usually a 8am and I'm going to try for 8.15am for a few days and push back the pm nap too as I'm also putting him down for BT so early which just perpetuates the EWs.

I'd kill for a 6am start to my day!!

Another 420 wake up (10 mins earlier everyday).  BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  I'm going to keep pushing the naps. My husband wants to push her bed time.  But she is tired at 7 (I mean she has been up since 430). Do you think later bedtime would be something I should look at? I just feel like crying.  All i want is to sleep more than 5 hrs a night or at least 5 hrs in a row.  BAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I'm sitting here at 530 crying. She has been up at 1130 3 4 445!! I just don't understand how literally we went from an amazing sleeper for over 4 months to this?!? I don't want to go anywhere because I just keep wanting to tackle this routine. We are up to 3.5 hrs of A!! She is managing quite well but it seems like so much for a 7 month old!!

Hugs!

Hugs Charjanemom!! I feel your pain - many a time I've been in tears when the rest of the world seems to be sleeping soundly and felt very sorry for myself!!

When she wakes early morning is she crying or babbling or what? I'm just wondering if it's discomfort of some sort? Is she cold? Are you in the UK cos I know the temperature has dropped drastically recently.

Normally it's babbling last night was not typical. I gave her a bottle and meds at 445 slept till 7 but now doesn't want much of her morning bottle. She only had a 35 min sleep all afternoon so she was Ot last night. The ew are usually happy hence upping her A thinking she is ut

well, it's good to know that I'm not alone!  Hugs to everyone going through the same thing.  Daughter always wakes up happy but at 420 in the morning she gets mad that we don't get her out of bed.  Pushed the nap to 9 am which was good. Now to see what happens this afternoon and more importantly tomorrow morning

Ya I'm happy knowing I'm not alone too. Maybe this is all developmental. Seems there are quite a few of us with babes the same age.
My daughter is so close to crawling its amazing in 3 days the change. I'm hoping once she masters it we might have regular nights.

It's funny the whole developmental thing. Jsut yesterday on a different post I mentioned how I still swaddle my LO because he's not rolling back to front. Wouldn't you konw, that night early morning I wake up to him making noise, look at the monitor and he's on his side trying to scissor kick his way on to his stomach. Needless to say we're weaning him from his swaddle now. The other day he ended up waking at 5am so I pushed his nap to 9. I apop'd the whole nap as he woke up after 30 min of being OT but he ended up waking at 6:15 this morning so maybe it worked? Still getting 1hr 20min naps but not sure I can push the A time out past 3hrs.

You might actually be better off shifting her bedtime earlier so her day isn't so long and that might help with the overtiredness. If you put her down for the night at 6 instead of 7, she might wake at 3/3:30 and that's definitely still night time - you should be able to get her back to sleep somehow - APOP encouraged ;)

Agree with bec, early bed sometimes means longer night same WU but LO is more rested for A extension the next morning too. Sometimes EBT even means later WU - I know crazy! ;)

Good news ladies, I pushed back LO first nap until 9 am and then last night she slept until 440am.  This is the best bit though, we managed to put her back down and she slept until almost 7.  Can I tell you i'm a new woman.  The only problem is when we tried to put her down for her first nap of the day at 10 am, she fought it until 11.  Sigh...I guess not everything can be perfect

Jaxsta81, she slept until 1030.  She's good at taking 1 1/2 hr naps.  She just is really, really, really excited to start her day.  Tonight we fly down south for a week so that's going to affect the progress that we made but i think I have more tools now to deal with the early wakings (and the sun will help).  I would like to know how everyone else is doing

So we're back from our trip and my daughter is still getting up early (although now she wakes at 445am).  Sigh!  Trying to get back into a routine.  Quest for everyone else having this issue:  do you bottle/breastfeed before bed for the night?

Yes I do. He gets 4 bottles during the day and one at night. 30min after he wakes up for the morning, after each 1.5hr nap and right before bed. That means there is only about 2.5hrs between the last 2 bottles but most times he downs a full bottle before bed anyway. He wakes up once at night to eat and then he wakes sometime around 5. Sometimes he gets himself back to sleep till 6 (we do a 6-6 his internal clock dictates that) and sometimes not but I know it's not Hunger. Are you not feeding before bed? Do you do a Dreamfeed? Sorry can't remember.

Yes I feed before bed and do a dream feed and she still eats bw 2-3 in the morning.  And then we're up for the day at 445.  BAHHHHHHHH!

I did it for 4 days but was also increasing A time so not sure which worked. We were getting 530 wake ups and they aren't happening as often. The odd 550 one.

I haven't tried wake to sleep but i think that's my next option.  Do I have to do it an hr earlier or 20 min before?  Although, it wouldn't have worked this morning, my daughter decided to wake up at 345 instead.  #$%%#@@!

1 hr for night sleep.
You cant do it if she is awake say 2hrs before for a feed...but if you have a good chunk of sleep before the EW then I would go for it ;) Remember to barely stir not wake. you just want to pull them from deep into light sleep. brushing their cheek often works x

Bah!  Wake to sleep won't work as she feeds at 2 am and then wakes at 430ish.  Many mornings now I just cry when I see the time.  She slept better at my parents house (we were away for a funeral) waking at 6am.  The only difference is that her cousin would wake at 5 am crying... maybe I need a crying baby to keep her asleep ... wait that won't work :P

Cdore I'm going through the same thing. Past 3 days my 6 month old woke at 5:20 4AM!!!!! and 5:06... I'm dying from exhuastion. You are not alone.. I used w2s for his 45 minute naps and it has worked. You could still try it if you want maybe do 3:45? Worth a shot, if you end up waking her up then it's still early enough that you should be able to get her back to sleep.

We discovered that we can get her to sleep a bit longer if we push the feeds at night.  we do dream feed at 11 and other feed i try to push at 330... that doesn't always work.  She is driving me insane right now.  There is never a set schedule b/c she is always changing it:

Today:

wake 500
E 6
A 630
E solids
A until 915
S until 1115 - longer than usual but she is feeling sick
E - 1115 breast milk and then solids
A - until 230
E - she is in her crib having a party.  She doesn't cry, she just plays and plays and plays.  It's currently 340 and she is still partying.  I don't have patience right now to go in so I'm ignoring her
She'll eat at 4ish and then 5 some solids
-in bed by 7 pm... the only time she can fall asleep on her own

I've been doing the EASY method since birth and I have to admit that it doesn't seem to work.  My friend who has a 5 month old, followed his schedule and he now takes 2 naps and sleeps through the night. he's been sleeping through the night since he was 2 months old.  I can't handle it.  I'm going INSANE. I don't know how to read my daughter's cues b/c I was always worried about the routine.  BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

we had this problem at about  months, the WU got earlier and earlier. I'm wondering if her EASY need a complete tinker? I think she might need to drop the 3rd nap, which is gonna lead to odd day lengths
The first a time seems long if she's getting up at 5 or earlier? If she's doing 3hr 15 A then maybe try and have 3 hr 30 for the first A. I foud the EW wakes started when the first and the last A times needed a tinker. She also seems to be fighting that last nap, so maybe she could handle a shorter nap and an earlier bed time, just till you can push her WU later. I found if we had too many long days in a row my lo would start getting OT and the naps and nightsleep would go wonky.

WU        5am
nap        8.30
wu         10
2nd nap 1:30
bed         5

She will have dropped the nap so hopefully will be tired enough to sleep a bit longer so then you can push for a longer day and a later getting up time. If you manage to get her to go back to sleep use this as an opportunity to get a later bed time. We had to do this several times, when he had a good night and was well rested I would push for longer day with a catnap to try and reset his body clock, but if it didn't work and he woke early I would do the above EASY . I remember having to put him to bed at 4.30 once!
I learnt tho, that now if he starts waking earlier and earlier I need to extend the A times, particularly the first and last . But you have to be careful and keep an eye out for OT because that can lead to EW too!
I hope this makes sense! I 'm trying to remember exactly what worked for us!
Thing with the EASY is it needs to be constantly monitored and tinkered with, it'll work great for a period but then some devopmental leap will happen and the ew, NW or shortened naps will start up and this is your signal to think about lengthening A times or shortening naps (with the 3 to2 and 2 to1) or both. But it has to be gradual over a couple of days or OT will confuse the issue more. Stick with it! we had a terribe time with sleep (or lack of) and the only thing that helped was BW and EASY. He's still not the best sleeper but the neither am I, so its inherited :) Some mums get good sleepers, but for those that don't, EASY is a godsend!

Hi badpixie,

thanks for getting back to me but my daughter is already on 2 naps a day.  Often she fights her afternoon one so she doesn't sleep in the afternoon.  8 months is too early for only one nap a day, right?! BAH

I don't know how to read my daughter's cues b/c I was always worried about the routine.
This bit is the key - following the routine (EAS order) should help you learn her cues. The A times are a guide - watch the clock to know when to watch for cues or you go mad watching for sleep cues for 3-3.5hr, yk?

Anything going on developmentally at the moment? That playing sounds like she's UT when you put her down and possibly becoming OT from not going to sleep. Sleep needs can drop really drastically when there's a physical/mental leap being achieved.

Hi becj86,

Daughter is has been crawling for a while, can stand by herself and started walking using a walker toy...I don't think she's going to start walking soon so I dont think it's something physical.  If you follow the Wonder Weeks, she's going through a mental leap at the moment and will be for the next 2 weeks.  I don't know if i can do it.  She was up at 4 this morning and she screamed most of last night. She just wanted to be held.  Does that mean she's going through separation anxiety?

Oops sorry I misread your EASY! Yes 8 months is too early to be thinking about 2 to1!

It does sound like she's getting OT to me though, fighting naps and night time screaming are signs, and so is EW. If she's going through a leap that can add to the OT because she needs more sleep if anything. I would really try and get some early bedtimes in to help her catch up on her sleep and then try and push bedtime out a bit at a time until its at a reasonable hour. You don't want to be having days much longer than 13/14hours especially if she's skipping the second nap.

Are you sure there's no teeth/pain going on? Recently added foods? It could be SA but that's generally an issue with falling asleep and re-settling rather than screaming all night, yk? It could also be OT - does she seem like she wants to sleep but can't?

Agree you need to do an early bedtime if she refuses that PM nap though - can you APOP a nap each day just to ensure she's getting rested enough?
