Refusing a bottle at daycare
« on: February 06, 2007, 02:32:23 am »
Our 6 month old DS has been refusing his bottle at daycare.  He takes it just fine for us at home, but vehemently refuses it at daycare.  Anyone else have similar problems?  He has started solids and eats those really well at daycare, and also will take a bit of water from a cup.

My DS was the same, he would refuse to take a bottle from anyone but me.  I would get them to persever - or even try to offer it in a sippy cup and see if this would help.

We're giving sippy cups a go, no luck as of yet.  I've tried a couple different ones, do you have any that worked especially well for you?

We have always used the Avent Sippy Cups, started with the soft spouted ones, and then when he was older he went onto the hard spout ones.

Do they offer the bottle in the same way that you do?  eg - you give it at room temp, at nursery they warm it.
Too hot
Too cold
different feeding position

Riley liked these the best, we were nursing when we intro'd them

I've found that the soft spouted Avent cups are hard for him to drink out of - although he may just not "get it" yet.  Actually, I tried drinking out of it, just to see why he wasn't getting anything out of it, and I thought you had to suck pretty hard!  We'll give it another go, just to keep trying!

I've actually gone in to the daycare when he should be ready to eat (I only work about 5 minutes away) to try and trouble shoot.  The only major difference between what they are doing and what I do at home is the fact that there are lots of distractions!  On one of the days, he wouldn't even eat for me.  Now, granted, we think he was teething and was overall kind of cranky, but he wouldn't even take a drop from me!  We use bottled water at home, and I even send the same water we use at home in his bottle to daycare every day.

Teething can play a big part in it as well as the distractions.

Have you tried rubbing some teething gel on his gums before a feed to see if this helps?
