Hi
I had been weaning my DS, but started to feel guilty and I didn't feel quit ready yet.  I'm trying to increase my milk supply by pumping 5 times/day, until I've reached a full supply again. Is there an easier way than to wash it every time I use it. I heard of just putting it in the fridge until ready to use again but doesn't sound too sanitary. I'm just wondering what others do.  Can I keep adding milk in the same bottle.

you could just boil it?! but that is quite a lengthy process in itself...you can add milk pumped the same day (i always have, but only from the same day for storage - if feeding i would mix if needed) but never cold with warm. always let it sit in the fridge and cool before mixing.

I appreciate the idea of reusing the breast pump sort of goes against natural instincts but it is fine.

From THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, La Leche League International, Sixth Edition, p. 158-159, 161-162.
"New research has shown that human milk can safely be kept at room temperature (66-72 degrees F) for up to ten hours because of its remarkable ability to retard the growth of bacteria. Milk can be kept refrigerated for eight days."

Lots of working mums pumping during a work day 'wet store' their pumps and reuse them and they don't have access to such a great fridge. I say wash your hands and go for it. I would probably store in a separate container though as PP says. These cooled batches can later be combined for a feeding or for freezing.

And a massive congratulations and well done for deciding to follow your mommy instinct and postpone weaning.

hmm good to know about the pump cleaning - wow!! i am very excited that i don't have to sterilize/wash it with every use!

Hey - for what it's worth - I used to wash and dry mine every night and leave it in the fridge from the first pumping of the morning until the next night.  Did that for 5 or 6 months and never had any dramas.

I am confused, are we talking about a manual pump???  You put the whole pump in the fridge ??? 

I have the Medela pump and after each pumping in the office, I go and wash the shield piece just with soap and water and then let it airdry for the next round of pumping.  Every couple of nights, there is a santizing bag that Medela makes where you add 2 ounces of water and the pump parts you want to sterilize (or bottle nippels for that matter) and pop it in the microwave for 3 minutes which actually sterilizes the parts.

Thank you for your replies.
And for the breast pump in the fridge I believe they mean the breast sheild, bottle and connectors. Leave it all together in fridge until ready to use and connect to pump part.  I got to look for those sanitizing bags, it sounds very convenient.

I am back at work and I purchased the Medela Cleaning wipes - found them at Target in the states.  They were about $9.00 for  24 wipes cause I teach and dont want to be in the loo cleaning parts......eeek!   Anyway, I will feel better about the wet storage,  Thanks for the posts!
