Tummy sleeping
« on: December 27, 2005, 08:41:23 am »
Hi guys,

When I try to put my son Nicholas (3 months) to sleep in the day time, the only way he can sleep longer more than one hour is when he sleeps on his tummy. I am keeping an close eye on him and he also has got a very strong neck. Does it matter if he can only sleep this way during the day?

Welcome your comments and suggestions.

Many thanks!

Jess from Australia

Hi

My 3 month DS is a side sleeper and this is the only way he'll go to sleep.  I worry about it too.  He stays on his side for his naps but turns himself on to his back during the night then wakes up because he can't get back to sleep.  I have to lift him up and tell him he's going back to sleep and lay him down on his side - he goes straight back off!  I know there are some other tummy sleepers on these boards so I'm sure you'll get more replies.

So ds sleeps okay on his back at night? If it's just during the day that's good 'cause you can check on him. The midwives in the hospital let my dd sleep on her tummy in the nursery, much to my horror of course but they told me not to worry, they were always there to keep watch. They said she was very unsettled on her back and would keep waking herself up even when tightly swaddled.

When I brought dd home, the only way she would sleep well was on her tummy so I gave in. I did purchase a grobag to try and set my mind at ease a bit IYKWIM!! After a couple of weeks, it no longer bothered me and I stopped checking her every five seconds!  Hehehe, I used to put the monitor as close to her as possible and if I turned the receiver volume right up, I could hear her breathing.

hi Jess...my dd is a tummy sleeper.. she does sleep on her back but not for very long and she hates side sleeping..i always keep a look out for her head and thank God can see that she turns it fine..i did try at the beginning to make her sleep on either side or back.. but i don't know what the secret is, on her side she would always wake up 10 min. later wet and very cranky. when she did sleep on her back, if she as much as opened her eyes a peep and saw something that caught her attention, she'd jolt up awake and wouldn't go back down easily.

So i guess for us, tummy sleeping was the best solution...

Our Little Imogen (22 weeks) is a tummy sleeper & has been since 4 weeks old. At first I was totally paranoid about it but  after 2 hours of non stop crying I gave in & flopped her on her tummy & she went straight to sleep & has slept this way ever since.

I can recommend getting a video monitor instead of just the sound ones, this way you can see that their heads are turned to one side or if you see them sleeping face down in the matress you can either turn the sound right up or go & plod around outside the door until they move their head again.

I also go to a mum & baby group where one of the mums works with babies in a hospital & she keeps trying to put her son down on his tummy even though he prefers his back cos she thinks it is better for him & will stop him being sick / help reflux etc....she says they do this all the time at work???!!

On a positive note I have read lot on the subject & it seems that tummy sleepers can hold heads up, roll earlier & sit & crawl earlier than back sleepers. I don't know if this is all true but my LO is certainly way ahead physically than other babies her age who all sleep on their backs. :D
