Tarri - I took Ethan to ONE playgroup when he was 6 months old.  It was the first one we ever went to (and the last one so far...), and he got sick a few days later.  I am convinced it was because of that.  Don't worry about being paranoid, we just don't want the kids to be sick!  But that's not a reason to not take your kids to playgroup either.  Anyway, just my thought.  Oh, and that wasn't the reason I didn't go back to the playgroup, the moms weren't very friendly, so I just didn't feel like dealing with that every week!

Also, about your df, when we finally kicked the habit with Ethan, we had gotten down to 2 oz at 8:30.  Then I quit cold turkey from there.  And he actually slept better without me coming in at that time.  I was so afraid he would wake up in the night without anything!  Those first few nights we had a couple of wakeups, but he just settled himself, no need for me!  Anyway, if you want to drop it soon, I wouldn't do anything less than the 2 ozs. you're already doing.  You may just try to drop it one night and see what happens, she may surprise you!

Good news about your babysitter.  I'm so thankful that my parents live close by, and I don't have to worry about it at all.  I still call and check in, but at least I know that he's in good hands!

Julie - sounds like you had a great week with night sleeping!  Sorry your weekend wasn't so hot, but maybe that will change.  Ethan had a couple of days this week with short naps, but then the next day, it will be back to normal.  I can't ever figure it out - so I just gave up trying!

Deborah - isn't it miserable with they have a cold?  Ethan has had one very mild cold, and then a lousy one about a month ago.  I answered your post about what we used for medication, which was Infant's Pediacare.  Helped with the congestion a bit, although the nose sucker was used A LOT!  Now he hates the changing table, cause that's where I did it all.  :?

Debra - we have a set of Peekablocks, but Ethan doesn't play with them much.  I guess they're not interesting enough for him!  We were over at my parents yesterday, and my mom has bought a Elmo for my nephew who will be just shy of 2 at Christmas.  It's the one where he goes in for a checkup or whatever.  So, we showed it to Ethan in the box, and pressed all the stuff, and he was so enthralled!  He just stared at it like, wow, it's talking to me!  So funny.

Schae - love your new avatar, I noticed that this weekend!  Good luck on your job negotiations!  Hoping a big salary for you!   :D   And then to be in your own house by Christmas, so great!

Jaime - good news on the first raise!  Now you have to decide if you want to go for more.  I was thinking when I read your post, well, if everyone gets a 10% raise, that doesn't mean that her salary is more equal to her peers, since they all got a 10% raise too...  I don't think you would seem ungrateful for the 10% just because you are still asking them to fix the original problem.  But you're more gutsy than I am, because when it comes to asking for raises or discussing career, I was always a total chicken!

Us - we had a pretty good weekend, low key.  Dh didn't get to go camping (oh, darn   ), so we had a date night on Saturday!  Went to dinner with my parents and Ethan as a belated birthday, and then my parents came over to watch Ethan while we went to see Harry Potter (not dh's choice, but it was supposed to be for MY birthday!   :D ).  So that was nice.  We haven't done that since before Ethan was born.

We have Ethan's checkup today at 4, so I'll have to report back on height and weight.  All I know is that the 9 to 12 pants are getting too short, and he's just now 9 months.  I asked everyone for 12 to 18 month clothes for him for christmas!

Oh - I almost forgot.  We were talking about tantrums earlier.  Ethan has started arching his back and crying EVERY time we put him in his highchair.  He used to love it, then he was tolerating it, but now he hates it when we put him in it.  But once the food is going, he's fine.  It's so bizarre.  But that arching back and screaming wail - I swear you'd think we were trying to kill him, not feed him lunch!      He also cries when we go into his room at naptime.  Once I get him in the armchair with me, and he has his paci, and we're reading a story, he's totally calm.  And he goes to sleep easily too - so I guess he just thinks he doesn't want to take a nap anymore!  Too bad!   :D

JulieB - I hope things got better.  Last time MIL was here, I tried to put Maya down for a nap and then go out, but according to MIL she woke up just a few minutes after I left.  Despite my instructions regarding her mantra cry, pat/shh, not taking her out of the nursery during naptime, and naptime becoming quiet time if she refuses to sleep, I came home to find she had rocked her to sleep in the living room.  At the time, I said to myself you weren't here, you don't know what happened, maybe MIL felt overwhelmed, but three weeks later as Maya was yet again crying herself to sleep on my shoulder, I was pretty furious.

Hazel - I am with you on the cold.  Maya has had a few very mild colds before (in comparison to this one, however dreadful they seemed at the time), but she's never been streaming snot like this.  And the cough is horrible.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Tarri - I agree, don't mess with a good thing.  If all else were good, I could deal with early mornings.  You just have to try to get yourself to bed earlier, though that never seems to work for me.

Tammy - Thanks for the input.  I just grabbed some Benadryl per the pharmacist's recommendation, but I need to back tonight without a cranky, sick baby on my hip.  There were so many choices, and Maya wasn't real cooperative about letting me read labels.  I'll look for the Pediacare.  The Benadryl seems to be helping, but it didn't come in an infant drops formula, which I prefer.

If I am a bit scarce in the next week or two, it's just because MIL is in town.  Between her and Maya, I think I'll have my hands full.

Heya! :D

Tarri: Good news about the babysitter! Emily sounds so cute.

Deborah: How is Maya today? Poor little munchkin. I hope Thanksgiving went okay. And good luck with having MIL so near by for so long!

Hazel: WELL DONE on the weightloss! I have my first meeting at Weighchers tomorrow. I hope Daniel feels better soon.

Tammy: Is Ethan ill too? Must be the change in season for you guys? I hope he recovers soon.

Us: Thank you for the avatar compliments, we went for a Xmas themed photoshoot. Luka was very well behaved (although a bit bemused having just woken up from a nap).
I'm going to add some of the pics (there were 91  ) to the gallery, please have a look :)

Very quickly - had Ethan's 9 month checkup today.  He was 22 lbs, 8 ozs, and 30 inches tall!  That's 80% for weight, and 90% for height.  Big boy!

So many tall babies around here!

Daniel is on the mend.  Runny nose is getting much better (don't think there's any snot left after he sneezed over me this morning   There was about a week's worth all in one go!!!) but he's still coughing quite a bit.  He seems remarkably not bothered by it all though.  He's still sleeping through and is taking good naps.  I raised his mattress the night the cold was coming on so I don't know if that's helped to keep him decongested.  But I'm happy.

More later.

Hi Everyone!

Eirwen is 10 months today! :D YAY!

I'm not sure if it is the arrival of her little 10mon bday but she's gotten to all fours five times in the last couple of days...and will do this leap frog push forward attempt but go splat on her belly.  It is pretty funny and cute!  She is trying to get everywhere now and does this crazy one legged arch spinning thing from lying on her side...hard to explain.  :o  Yesterday she tried to climb onto me for the first time and I felt so loved. (they need a heart-melting emoticon)

Other crazy things that she's done over the weekend is that she apparently likes her exersaucer and has "asked" to play in it a couple of times.  I have this acitivity cube that is so cool, wood, and tons of stuff on it and it is for a 12mon range but yesterday she decided she loved it.  She's even tried to pull up on it to reach the spirals and suddenly everything about it has become interesting.

I must just use a moment here to plug BW and express my thanks for Tracy's methods.  Over the weekend a friend of mine visited with her 5 month old.  It was very difficult for me, it always is because they do not use BW.  The baby was obviously tired, rubbing her eyes, etc.  Crying a lot.  It was so clear to me, and my husband!, that the baby needed a nap.  They were frantic with bf feeding, then bottles, fumbling around and really stressed.  The dad even was holding her upside down by her feet to get her to stop crying.   Finally the mother rocked her in her arms exclaiming "what is wrong with you," and such, until poor little one passed out cold on her.  It just broke my heart.  I had true empathy for her though because I was where she was at at 3-4 months and finally did what I had to do to get us on EASY.  I guess I am just so happy I found this way of doing things.  BUT it did mean a lot of sacrifices in the beginning, like not taking Eirwen out during nap time, because well, mom had to stick to nap times too   Now that Eirwen is older I can flex her pretty easy.  I am just so glad that I have you guys too because everyone around me thinks I'm nuts- even my mom :(   HUGS FOR ALL OF YOU!

Colds
- Eirwen has been coughing a lot but I can't tell if she is playing with me because she smiles afterward.  She does have mouth sores though on the corner creases.  I cannot tell what kind they are.  Should I have it checked out?  I will be so sad if she somehow got the cold sore virus :(

Tammy- Ethan is big and beautiful!  Happy belated 9 months to him!

Hazel- I love your new avatar. How cool that Daniel is standing!  Still not having too much luck on that with Eirwen. Congrats on the 5 lbs- that is GREAT.  About $$$- I so relate.  I wish my dh would sit down with me though but he just gets upset about the whole thing.  This move to CO is costing us a fortune (debt debt debt and more debt  ) but we figure it is worth it in the long run--my friend says that when you are unhappy you can't get out of debt- I wonder???  I am going to try to get a financial "helper" person to get us going on a more restricted budget once in CO.  I too have been overspending.  I think it's a result of being depressed combined with hating where I live, combined with the fact that there is just too cute baby clothes out there, and going to malls so we have some place to go   Are you a SAHM?

Deb- We have the peek-a-balls.  They ROCK!  Eirwen LOVES LOVES LOVES THEM!  I want to get her the blocks too.  She will play with them for well over 30 min.  She picks up each one and studies it, shakes it to see it's sound and then taps them together.

Tarri- yay on clapping!  Emily was just finally ready I bet. It's amazing what they pick up now so quickly.

MIL- I don't think I could ever let mine babysit, but she is in The Netherlands far far away...so I am SAVED!

I'm kinda embarrassed to say, but I've pretty much kept Asher limited to the family room for most of his life with gates.  I know I need to let him free!      Now that he's upright and not body-surfing the kitchen floor, I figure he wouldn't get so dirty.  So I washed my kitchen floor on my hands and knees yesterday.  With our indoor dog, it was so much dirtier than I imagined!  Not only was there plenty of dog hair on the floor (despite vacuuming and swiffering just before), but it was also stuck to the walls and corners, etc!!!!  EWWWW!  So I washed everything I noticed and let him loose.  And OF COURSE, he immediately finds the ickiest corners of the kitchen that I didn't notice (like the dusty water heater vent on the cabinet, the dirty hinges on the bathroom door, the crack between the oven door/pan drawer).  He's also fascinated by the garbage and already figured out how to open all the cabinets and drawers.  What do you all do?  How can I possibly stay on top of all this with the dog?!  What do I do about the garbage?

And I posted in the EASY forum, but Asher's eating all the furniture!    He had a mouth full of plaster from a pillar this morning.  I replaced it with a box and he started eating the box!  I can't possibly remove all the furniture from my house.  The end tables block off the vertical blinds.  How do you keep your babies from the vertical blinds?  How do I keep him from eating the furniture?!

Hazel, still looking into the bibs, don't seem to have the same bibs available?  We have BRU here, but the actual store didn't carry any, just online.  I'll have to call around, don't really want to pay for shipping just yet.

Tammy, Asher starts to fuss/cry at the beginning of a nap as well when we're changing his diaper.  It's like he's impatient and wants to get down to business and start sleeping!    If I give him his luvie on the table, he'll usaully pop his thumb in and settle down.  For the high chair, maybe Ethan needs more of a warning that it's time to eat so he can transition easier?  Just an idea.

Schae, just LOVE the christmas photoshoot!!  :D

Christmas Down Under:  So me & DH were thinking about those of you in the southern hemi last night.  If it's hot and you don't have snow, what are your Christmas songs about?  Do you have american christmas songs, or just your own?  Instead of "I'm dreaming of a white christmas," are you singing, "I'm dreaming of a hot christmas?"      We don't get snow here, but it gets cold, so we still appreciate the songs like "Let It Snow."  Hmmmm, maybe you sing, "Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine..."

EEK!!!!!!! Pertusis - whooping cough.  Ever heard of it? WELL, one of my darling students has it. Very contagious and quite dangerous if not treated. So I got a call from my doc today with an earful of info on what to look for and to bring Leah in immediately if she shows any signs. Just another think to worry about!  :?

Happy 10 months Eirwen and 9 months to Luka!!!

Schae - I am off to look at your pics right now!

Branwen - Leah's top two teeth are poking thru too. Those will sure change their appearance, huh? Yes, I am glad to have everyone too.  :D People think I am nuts. My MIL asked if we were bringing Leah to church Christmas Eve for the 10:00 (night!) service. I was like, ummm that is like 3 hours past her bedtime.

Deborah - Good luck with the MIL!

Heather - Beautiful pictures of your sister's wedding on your jusspress site. You all look stunning and Kelsey looks like a doll - literally!!!!

Not much time to post. I will be able to chat more soon. After today I have five days off for Thanksgiving break!  :D

I forgot to post this yesterday, but wanted to just as info to all you other moms with the sickies...

Ethan had a cold about a month ago, but still has a bit of a cough.  It's not terrible, and it's not constant, but it's VERY slowly going away.  When we went to the doc, I told her about it, and she did listen to his lungs, which sounded fine.  She said she would bet money that he had bronchitis, and if I brought him in a couple of weeks ago, she probably would've heard it in his lungs then.  But it's viral, so nothing can be done for it - no antibiotics, etc.  It's just a wait it out kind of thing.  She said she has seen a ton of cases of it so far this fall.  And some kids are getting it bad, and others just a tad.  Anyway, I just wanted to tell you guys that have ones with the colds about that.  Not that there's anything we can do, but just as info!

Christine - yikes!  pertussis!  This is why I'm glad I get Ethan immunized (that's not a slight to anyone out there who doesn't, just me being glad).  Here's hoping no symptoms on anyone else you know!  And have a good holiday and days off!  I know you're ready for them!

Julie - Ethan is pretty confined to the upstairs.     Our downstairs is mostly wood floors, so when he was learning to crawl, I was afraid he'd bonk his head on the wood, whereas carpet is softer (which is what is upstairs).  We have a gameroom where all his toys are, so I just let him crawl around and explore the upstairs of the house.  We pretty much only come downstairs for feeding times.  Lately I've been letting him explore downstairs a bit more, but not too much.  Now that he's trying to pull up on everything, the wood floors are slippery in socks!  So, don't feel too bad about keeping him penned up.  And yes, they always go for the area you didn't get to clean (or didn't even think of!).  We have a beagle, and there is dog hair EVERYWHERE.  It's impossible to keep up with, although I try my hardest.  So, his pants are always covered in dog hair by the end of the day, there's just nothing I can do about it!  But I'm SO right there with you!

Branwen - happy 10 months!   :D  And way to go on Eirwen getting on all fours!  Exciting!  I too have those "I love BW" moments when you see another mom trying so hard to cope.  It's so difficult because, at least I don't feel like I can say anything.  I remember being in that space, and if someone had said something to me, regardless of how nice, I would've felt like they were criticizing me as a mother.  As it is, I sometimes feel like other people are criticizing me anyway (I'm sure they aren't, but you just feel that way sometimes). And good luck on the move to CO - when are you guys moving - do you know yet?

Hazel - here's hoping that Daniel is getting over that nasty cold!

Schae - I LOVE all your pics, so cute!

Us - nothing much new to report.  Ethan woke up at 5 am crying, but went back to sleep on his own by the time I got upstairs.  I was so afraid he would decide he'd had enough sleep, but he went back to sleep until 7!  Figures it was dh's day to get up with him.  (Dh and I trade off days to sleep in when he's in town and working from home.  I LOVE those days!   :D )

Oh, and because we're hosting Thanksgiving here for my parents and in-laws, I got someone to come super duper clean the house for me today.  When I was working, we used to have someone come every few weeks, but without my income, it's definitely an expense that's gone by the wayside.  But just this once, I told myself... and the house is so clean and lovely right now.  I just want to lock the dog outside and keep it super clean at least until Thursday!

That's it for us for right now.  Have a nice evening / day ladies!  :D

Hi Everyone,  I really like the VIBE of our chat group these days:)

Tammy, I think last night was the last df, she had 3oz at 8:00.  I've decided I'm only going to give it if she cries out by 10:30.  Wish me luck!

Christine, that's scary about the whooping cough, Leah better not catch it!

Deborah, is there a creative way you can get MIL to leave earlier?  You know, like a creative excuse

Branwen, Happy 10 months to Eirwen.  That's sooo good that she likes her exersaucer.   And I totally hear ya on the BW stuff.  I've decided I'm only giving BW books for babyshower gifts.

JulieB, I'm just the opposite, I've got Emily playing in just about every room in the house.  So we've got baby toys everywhere.  She needs a change of seen every 1/2 hour or she's a crankball.  I might regret it once she's mobile though.  I don't have to worry about her getting into dirty corners yet.  Don't worry too much about dirt, I read that you should just watch that they don't eat any rotting food as that can make them really ill, but that dust and dirt won't do them much harm.

Us, we had our doctor's appointment today.  Everything went well and Emily weighs 22lbs.  I hope dropping the df tonight goes okay.  Goodnight/day everyone.  Tarri

Tammy - Leah has had the pertussis shot, so that makes it a bit better. But doc said there is still the possibility of catching it. I could just kick myself though - the little girl who had it had been coughing horribly all last week. Whooping cough never even crossed my mind. Poor kid.

Tarri - Good luck dropping the dream feed. My fingers are crossed for you!!!!! I also like the group vibe!!!!!

Tarri - we have gone back to the Df   I was just so tired - i was falling asleep while the kids played around me (literally fell asleep on their little kiddie sofa and olivia woke me up by grabbing my eyeballs  , then fell asleep next day reading to alex after her nap and again yesterday on the playmat in our living room while olivia crawled around) last 2 nights we gave it at 10:30 and she took 4 oz 1st night and slept to 6:20 or so and 2nd night took only 2 oz but slept closer to 6:45 or so

julie - they play all the same songs here and same decorations including wintery themed things - so people get he true xmas experience they do a lot of "Christmas in July" parties/celebrations here in the mountains where it is cold - Dh's company organizes a dinner for it each year but i find the concept bizarre and don't go (it is July so pretend all you want it is strange).  Xmastime in sydney can vary each year - some years we are in bathing suits atthe beach and other years it is cool enough for a light sweater - but we still go to the beach  :D

Branwen - glad she likes the exersaucer.  olivia is the same with the peek-a-blocks - i have to laugh though b/c sometimes she is banging and shaking and there is no sound - she expects them all to have bells/beads etc and is confused by the quiet ones.

Us - apart form the Df issue Olivia is pulling up every day - not sure if i posted that she started doing it without helop as of Saturday (pulled up on alex's ride on toy). i found out yesterday though that she actually pulled up on the sofa on Friday in front of the mother's helper - so she was the 1st to see it

Branwen:  Way to go, Eirwen!  Sounds like she's starting to explode in the milestone department!  Asher had a month like that!  I was freaking out because it was all happening so fast, I barely had time to catch my breath!
I also appreciate my BW buddies so much!  I belong to another birth month group, been with them since I was 8 weeks PG, but I don't post so much anymore.  I just don't have much in common with any of them and often feel like the BW outsider.  It's sad.  I'm also on the outside among my friends.  My heart just breaks when they tell me they're starting to wean, stop co-sleeping, and letting their LOs CIO for a few days.  And I swear, every time I see one friend's DD, her eyes look so red and tired.  I just want to take her in my arms and put her down for a nap!  Her mom just trapses all over town with her.  When I asked one day, long ago, how many naps she had a day, she said it depends on what she has planned for the day!      Sometimes several, sometimes none!  Ironically, she ended up with an angel/spirited baby who adapts well.  I secretly hope her next (due in march) is touchy!!    I'm so bad!  I originally heard about the book from her.  She was one of those who read the book but hated it.

On the cough and sores, Asher learned how to cough on command and does it all the time.  So maybe she's just learned a new trick?  Do you or your DH get cold sores?  Isn't it genetic?  If they don't seem to get better soon, maybe it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out.

Christine, there's a whooping cough outbreak/warning here (all year actually).  Has Leah been vaccinated?  If she's up to date on the popular schedules, she should be fine.  But you should have your tiers checked to see if you need a booster yourself.  The chance of catching it is very minor.  We don't vaccinate, but we don't have the exposure potential as you do.  We're just very meticulous about keeping things cleaned and hands washed when we're out.  I can't BELIEVE that mother would send her profusely coughing child to school!  When I used to work, I hated it when coworkers wouldn't have the decency to stay home when sick.  I realize they need the money, but hey, have some courtesy to the rest of us!

Tammy, you should buy some non-skid socks for those wood floors!  I've seen them at Old Navy.  I still have Asher in bare feet, since he's still a new walker, though his little toes get cold!    I'm feeling better about the dog now!      I tell myself when DH gets a better job, the first thing I'm gonna get is a MAID!!

Here's hoping all the sick LOs get better quickly and the rest of you stay healthy!!  Take your vitamins!  Drink your OJ!   Get good rest!  (take it from Deb!)

Just a quick hello... Maya is still sleeping!  This cold has her worn out.

I don't have much time, but I wanted to add that Hanes makes non-skid socks too.  I saw them in WalMart.  I'm not sure how small they come (I was buying 18mos-3T for Maya's freakishly large feet which is really odd when you consider she was wearing 3-6mos onesies the other day), but they do make them.

Got to go.  Maya's up, but 7:30am, WOW!
