whats the best way to keep formula cold when out and about!
« on: March 08, 2007, 23:07:55 pm »
Hi there this is a silly question I know but I'm so careful with the formula side of things.  At the moment i have to store in fridge (usually only for few hours) as i have to add colief to it for 4 hours before he can have it.  My main question is when i go out how do i keep the milk cold and how long will it last.  do i but some sort of chill pack from mothercare and how long does it keep in something like that? if i just take formula from fridge and say I'm just popping out can i keep it in my bag for a certain time or is it dangerous to keep out of fridge for even minutes without being chilled?? I told you it was a dumb question! I cant seem to find comfort ready made but no use as i need to add colief and when ready made they say you add it 30 mins before little one can have it and there is no way he will wait 30 mins when hes hungry! also what do they abbreviations mean ie: dd ds dd2???? i gather it means baby or something? i might aswell ask all the dumb questions here  :D

Hi lovey - I was the same having bottles and colief and all that... I used Omneo Comfort.. they dont do it ready made..

I used a cold pack in a small ice bag. The times that bottles are safe inside them vary depending on the bag that you use. I had an avent one and bottles were safe for 4 hours inside it. I would discourage you from having the bottle out of the fridge in your bag without chilling it.. even a slight raise in temp could encourage any bacteria to grow.

There is a whole post about abbreviations in the intros board so you can take a peep at that.. but for now - dd is dear daughter.. dd1 - dear daughter number 1, dd2 dear daughter number 2...
ds - dear son.. ds1 - dear son number 1.. and so on..
LO is little one..

I've found some ice packs (called Kryopack) that can be wrapped around a bottle.  Then I use an elastic band to secure it in place before I put it in a thermal bag.  This keeps the bottle cold for 4 hours (at least).  For longer times, I often carry pre-measured formula in a separate container and I fill another bottle with the correct amount of water.  When it's time for my LO's feed, I just dump the formula into the bottle and shake.  This way I know the formula I am serving my LO is fresh and not spoiled.

I recently found a great themo bag in Tesco's with an ice pack and keeps the bottles chilled for hours, its handy aswell coz it can be attached to the buggy if your going out.  I did have one of the avent bottle holders but didnt find them great.
