Help! Baby not putting on weight, green poo, aaaargh!!
« on: April 25, 2006, 14:13:33 pm »
I'm ready to throw in the towel.

My 12 week old DD was putting on weight just fine during first 2 months (Birth weight 8 lbs, at two months 10.3lb). In the third month she lost weight when I spent a week trying to get her to take a bottle of EBM once a day (she refused), so I gave up that battle but she gained very slowly for the following two weeks. Now at the end of three months, she has put on just half a lb in the month (she weight 10.8lbs). She has grown 1.5 inches but her head circ is grew only .25 inch. Apart from that, she is super active, she turned on her tummy for the first time at 9 weeks, and I have the impression that she is burning up calories faster than she can take them in.

I have tried spacing out her feeds more so that she would eat properly, no difference.  Can't supplement as she refuses bottle outright.

She had a growth spurt ten days ago and since then, she coughs, sputters and pulls off the breast frequently - I think I am having fast let down issues as the milk is dribbling down and squirts when I press the nipple (this never happened before, just since her growth spurt).

I have tried feeding her whenever she wants, she started yesterday having mucousy green poos (the last three in 12 hours, she normally has only one poo per day!). I could have cried.

I am at my wits end. I'm committed to BF for her health but if she doesn't grow, then it can't be good for her. Currently she takes 5-6 feeds per day, one at 4am. she sleeps well at night, going to bed around 7.30pm, 11pm DF; 4am night feed and up at 7.45 am.

First: What should I do about the green poo.
And what should I do about her weight gain (I know that bf babies slow down at 3-4 months, but this has been a little too abrupt, even my doctor who is very supportive of BF thinkso so and she has fallen off her curve on the BF babies weight chart too).

Any advice gratefully appreciated.
Thks

How is UR diet? There are lots of supplements  u can take for ur milk...maybe give them a shot? Also have a look at these tips for getting baby to take bottle https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=35385.0

Re: The green poo...my DS sed to get that too when I BF him I was told it was due to too much foremilk... sounds as though she's not getting the hindmilk..how long does she feed for? On both side?

Kellymom.com has some great suggestions for a fast let-down and ways to encourage hindmilk intake. You may want to single-side feed for awhile.

It's great that your doctor is supportive but have you considered talking to a lactation consultant of a la leche league leader? It really could make all the difference. Their training will have been very specific and if you use a helpline it needn't cost money.

You could also post on the LLL mother-to-mother forum. It is visited by tons of trained leaders and breastfeeding counsellors and you may well get some really expert advice.

IMO - half a pound in a month is not to be sniffed at. It certainly doesn't constitute a failure in breastfeeding but obviously I'm not your doctor. If your milk supply has recently expanded and you're having fast let downs she could be having a lot of foremilk which would explain green poos.  A longer term imbalance of foremilk would also explain a reduction in weight gain as the fattier hindmilk is clearly what packs on the calories.

I really would suggest you give the LLL or a helpline a try and perhaps ask about ways to increase hindmilk in a feed.

I don't know if this is true, but I had a nurse tell me that they could have green poo due to the mother taking in too much caffine--I ate a TON of chocolate one day, and dd had a couple green poos after that, but it went away when I stopped eating my sweets like a pig :D  Just a thought.

I was told by our lactation consultant that green poo is too much foremilk. I had the same problem with my LO. I have super fast flow and had to express a bit prior to feeding her bc she would get very sleepy on the breast and take too much foremilk.

Thank you all ladies,

I think it really is the fast let down issue. Last night I tried the suggestion to pump some milk off before putting her on the breast and lo and behold, this morning, a nice normal mustard poo. Then this morning I did not pump of the milk and I got a greenie again. Will post on LLL site too for more answers.

Many thanks once again.
