blocked duct/ possible mastitis and EASY
« on: April 26, 2006, 09:54:22 am »
I've had a milk blister on my nipple for about 2 weeks now. it is not always painful (only about 20% of the time did it flare up) but I have a feeling that I may have developed mastitis. I have a doctors appointment this afternoon, but I am concerned about maintaining the EASY schedule.

My dd has just turned 4 months and we've only just started her on a 3.5 hour transition EASY. It's going really well, but I've read that when you have mastitis you should nurse from the infected breast every 2 hours to keep the milk flowing freely!! I realise my health is more importnant than the schedule but wondered if anyone else has experienced this and how they coped staying on EASY?

Any tips/advice/suggestions welcome!!

I actually had mastitis when DS was only 2 weeks old so it didn't really affect his schedule at all.  Your health is very important in a time like this because you want to keep on breastfeeding.  See what your Dr suggests ... maybe it isn't as bad as you think (I am hoping for you!).  In the worst case you can keep breastfeeding on schedule and pump in between to help get rid of the mastitis.  Even if you have to breastfeed every 2 hours I don't think it will be too hard to get back on schedule afterwards (sorry I am assuming that your lo is doing wel on her current schedule  :)).

Let us know what your Doctor says and we will go from there!

thanks for the reply. i saw the doctor and it is mastitis :( luckily it looks like we caught it early enough and she gave me anti-biotics to help get rid of it.

i feel absolutely exhausted today but luckily my breast isn't too sore to nurse my dd (i put a hot wet compress on it before her feed). i have just stuck with the 3.5 hour schedule today, as the doctor said i don't really need to nurse more often. if my breast doesn't seem to be improving i will ofcourse review sticking to the schedule.

i stupidly forgot to ask her if the antibiotics will help get rid of the milk blister. if this doesn't heal surely the problem may recurr  :'(

Hugs!!

Mastitis is definitely not fun!  I hope you feel better soon.  It is good that you will be able to maintain your EASY schedule.  Warm compresses are a great idea, that will definitely make everything feel a bit better.

Good luck!

I think you will find your mastitis will clear up quite quickly.  Both times mine was gone within 24 hours and it was because we caught it early and I went on antibiotics straight away.

I hope you recover quickly.
