Title: When do I stop formula?
Post by: lyssie28 on October 31, 2013, 09:39:24 am
Hi my dd is only 7 months so I know her formula is her main diet now.  She also has 3 meals of pureed food a day after her milk.  I was just wondering when do I stop giving her formula and just give her cows milk as a drink with her meal? At the minute she takes most of her bottle in one go and then, if there is any left, I keep the bottle next to her and if she's got any left she will just pick the bottle up herself when she wants the rest.

It's formula or BM until they are 1 and they should be taking between 20-24 oz until then.

I used cows milk in cooking from about 8 months as I BF and couldn't be bothered expressing and it was fine.

I FF until just before DD's first birthday.  I was running low on formula so rather than buying more I made the switch.  I started doing half and half bottles of formula and milk and then just milk and she was absolutely fine with it.  She was having 3 bottles a day at that point, and by about 18 months it became 2 sippy cups (she still drains a sippy of milk just like she used to with a bottle)

Ok so if I ff until at least 1 and then make the switch.  I always worry that she should be taking more solids now but I see she's ok :)

Thanks.

Yes solids until 1 is just for fun!!

Milk does reduce a bit round 8-9 months but keep to at least 20 oz until one.

What volume of solids is she taking?  Is she taking finger foods yet?

I always wait until at least an hour after her bottle and it just depends how hungry she is for the solids.  Generally she can take between 5-15 tsp (about half a jar) sometimes more depending on how long ago her milk was.  She hasn't had many finger foods but I have been giving her little bits over the past few days because she kept trying to take my food and I read if they do that they might be ready to try some.  She has only had bits of rusk and I now give her a little bit of my toast in the morning.  She doesn't really swallow anything though, just plays and put it in and out of her mouth.

I think at the minute she is taking almost 30oz of milk plus her solids.

She's doing great!!

At this age I started doing a lot more finger foods so toast and pancakes, broccoli etc. you're right in that they don't take a lot in initially but it good practice for sure.
