What age do babies stop spewing up milk?
« on: March 17, 2011, 21:29:36 pm »
Hi,

My son is 6.5mths old and is quite a wee spewer.

After he has a bottle he spews up a bit of milk with each burp.

He burps very easily. I haven't had to wind him since he was about 4mths.

When he spews a bit of milk it doesnt seem to bother him. Im just curious as to when babies stop doing this?

Thanks.

Mine were both BF, but also huge spitters. ::) I found it only really improved once they started sitting up well on their own.

Could your lo have reflux? I only ask as my DS spewed milk for a very long time. Does your son ever sound like he has a wet cough, especially after spewing?

I always suspected reflux since DS was a newborn, but my ped dismissed it. I brought it up again after we had a chronic cough for 4mo once he turned a year. Started as whopping cough, but lingered and they gave DS antibiotics - didn't work. Steroids, oral and inhaled - didn't work. Finally I demanded reflux meds and it disappeared along with the spewing that occurred almost every night, if not every feeding.

Not trying to scare you, but just giving you something to think about.....

DD2's pediatrician indicated that routinely spitting up could go to about 8 months old.  Having said that, she is now also 6.5 mo, and it is pretty unusual for her to be spitting up anymore.

Sitting up and being established on solids usually stops or reduces spitting up. Crawling can make it worse again however! It could be reflux, most babies have a degree of reflux as the top sphincter isn't strong enough but this develops with age. If the spilling/ spitting up isn't bothering him at all and isn't affecting his weight gain then it's only a problem for your washing machine!

If you are worried and it is bothering him see your Dr for advice.

HTH!

Thanks for feedback.

He is on solids and can nearly sit up on his own. He'll sit on his own for a minute but if he turns round too quick, he falls over.

Weight gain is fine and the spewing doesnt seem to bother him.

Yeah, washing machine is used a lot as his clothes barely stay clean on him for long!

Have to have a muslin cloth with me everywhere I take him!

If he's happy and healthy then I wouldn't worry at all. DS spat up so often we used to call him our little supermodel. :) Some kids are just spitters. It sounds like he was a lot like yours: gaining well and happy as a clam, just spitting a lot. I used to bring an extra top for myself in the diaper bag in case he nailed me when I didn't have a blanket. ::)
