6 days of solids and 3 wakings at night
« on: June 13, 2006, 04:10:27 am »
Does introducing solids disturb a baby's sleep at night?

I've done 6 days of weaning following AK's book - so LO has had baby rice, carrot, pear and yam at 12pm ish.

Since then LO is waking a lot during the night. Last night it was 10pm, 3am, 5am, 6am.

Is this to be expected?
She doesn't seem to be suffering from gas or stomach pains but she is hungry.

Any ideas would be great

Has her breastmilk/formula intake changed since starting solids? If solids are replacing her breast/bottle intake, that could result in night wakings from hunger because solids have fewer calories. If that's not it, post back and we'll see if we can figure it out!

thanks for replying.
No her formula intake has stayed the same though she's never been a great eater.
She'll only take 100ml at a time and i have to get her to have more throughout her whole A time.
She has about 500/600ml a day.

i have the same problem, but my baby is waking up with wind i think his knees are on his chest and is kicking all the time. for the last 2 days ive pulled him off all food and he is back on just breast milk. maybe u should just give milk b4 bedtime as it is comfoting to baby and more filling. i will let u know if it is better with just milk. maybe they are not ready for solids.

Same problem here too.  :o  Also day 6 of solids. Wakings are erratic, lots of gas and explosive poops. wakings either just after bedtime (between 1 hour to 3 hours after) and then very early in the morning 4AM or 5AM, and difficult to get back down again. I have also stopped solids and just given milk today - bear in mind I EBF and solids were given with formula - am getting a breastpump monday so hopefully it will get better. Am keen to see what other replies you get. Arent there little mouths cute the way they open up like little birdies for the food.  ;D

I've kept going with the solids and even increased it to 2 meals a day - breakfast and lunch - and the wakings have reduced. She's now down to 1 a night though she does wake 1hr after bedtime (which I'm not counting as I'm still up then  ;D )
I re-instated the DF at 10pm and I think it's very cute the way they open their little mouths like tiny birds in the nest.  ;D

Might her digestive system not be used to so much new food in a week?

I thought of that and I did identify baby rice as being a real windy suspect so I cut it out and she's been much better.
I'm going to wait a bit longer before i give her that again.
But the veggies are great and pear gives her excellent BM
Plus she loves feeding time. It's more like play time. She recognises her bib and the little dish. It's amazing.   :D

I started my LO on one new veggie a week.  She did pretty well with them, and the cereals too.  But when I started with the fruits she started waking at night too - no wind, but obviously uncomfortable.  She seemed as annoyed to be awake as I was to be awake with her  ;)  My pedi thinks it is a coincidence, but I don't.  I really think she was having trouble with the fruits -- either the acid or the fact that they are natural laxatives, I'm not sure.  I took her off all fruits (she had only tried pears and peaches) and she's been just fine since.  Of course, her formula intake has gone back up and she *finally* made the switch to a 4 hour EASY so maybe it was just a transition thing, I'm not sure, but I'm also not willing to take the coincidence speach from my pedi without question.  I would try cutting back if I were you and starting again.  After reading the posts here, it looks like a common issue.

Good luck!!

I've just cut the fruits, except banana and last night she woke up at 2am and only for 5mins.
