Suddenly Refusing Fruit and Vegetables
« on: June 20, 2006, 11:50:19 am »
Hi

Can anyone help.  Josh my 12 month son has suddenly started to refuse eating fruit and vegetables.  He will pick them up put them in his mouth and then just spit them out again.  At first I wasn't too worried as I knew when I feed him there was fruit or Veg in his dinnner.  Now however he is eating all his own food (is that okay or should I still be feeding him).

I am really worried as he is only really wanting to eat Fish Fingers or Potato Waffles etc.

Has anyone else experienced this and can give me any advise.

Thanks a Lot

Vicki

It's perfectly fine to let him feed himself...in fact, at that age, that's often the only option they'll give you! Sometimes toddlers go through weird food phases. You can try to do different things like coat them in crushed cheerios to give them a new texture. My experience has been that the more you worry about it, the more likely they are to pick up on your concern and continue refusing. When Tyler has gone through phases of only wanting certain foods, I just go with it, as long as they're healthy foods and don't cause any other issues (like constipation). It will pass! I've been known to hide veggies, though...purees make great sandwich or waffle spreads!

My ds did exactly this. He at first would eat everything and then he started to refuse vegetables and fruit. He became obsessed with waffles also, we had to stop buying them. ::) In fact we still don't buy them now-i think he has forgotten all about them.  Slowly we managed to get him eating fruit and veg again. Fruit was the easiest, i just kept offering him bits and eventually he liked them again. (i would put pureed fruit in his porridge if i was worried he was not getting enough) Veg took a bit longer but he was eating all veg again by the time he was about 18 months.
I found homemade soup was a great way of getting veg down him while he was being picky. He particularly liked dipping bread into it (messy but it worked) I also would put spinach in scrambled eggs or grate carrot into mashed potato....there are many ways of sneaking those veg in.
He has always had an issue with carrots and surprised us the other day by eating a whole plate of cut up carrots with a whole tub of Hummus! So it is worth trying to reintroduce foods that you think that your lo does not like every now and again because their taste buds do change and they may surprise you.
Good luck, i agree with the person below...try not to worry. I'm sure it will work out just fine.
