Title: So I have some wierd food allergies wonder if anyone can relate?
Post by: Chantel03 on September 14, 2007, 04:20:18 am
So I could eat anything tell I was about 12, and got mano.  Then after that I started getting really sick, and throwing up for no reason(symptoms kinda like food poisoning).  I went to doc's no one could figure out what was wrong with me.  They pretty much told my mom I was a nervous kid, and put me on all this stomach medicine.  Which really came up nice when I was sick. :P  So at about 15 I started to realize I got sick everytime I eat fish.  Not just fresh, but salt water, and shell fish too.  My parents didn't believe me so they started sneaking it in my food, and yes you guessed it I was puking all night long. :P

So now that I'm older I cant eat all types of fish, mushrooms, cashews, and since I was prego deer meat.  I've talk to doc's and they are like if it makes you sick don't eat it. ::)  Thanks for the help doc...  I wonder if this is an allergy or an intolerance.  Most people I know get rashes.  I get a bought of ecoli for about 12hrs.  Plus I'm worried since I cant eat fish, take fish oil, the stuff my body lacks cus of it.

Anywho thought I would put it out here in the BW world, and see if anyone else has allergies like this.... ::)

Chantel........you are so not going to believe this. I was searching this to see if there were any topics for starting a 1 yr. old on milk when they have reactions to cheese and are on soy formula. So, I see the subject for this topic and realize it's you. SO........... I have had seasonal allergies since I got preg. with my 1st son (21 yrs. ago) and then it got worse after the 2nd one (15 yrs. ago) then about 6 yrs. ago I got into a truck rollover and the roof of the truck crunched down and hit my head. Not severe but it hurt. Since that time I have the absolute worst food allergies. Got allergy shots but had to stop becuz it made the reactions worse. I'm allergic to: oranges (I can dream about smelling them and it physiologically sends me into throat swelling, etc.), mushrooms, cashews (& other nuts but these are the worst-just picking them up makes my fingers numb & tingly), peanut butter, different types of lettuce, green beans, spinach, lobster, crab, cauliflower (I SWEAR I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP), and more stuff but I can't think of it now.  I wasn't allergic to this stuff before - crazy, huh? Most of the time, I just drink lots of Benadryl and it's ok but during certain times of the month my symptoms get more severe and I've had to use an epi-pen 4x.  I have had reactions that cause hives (so bad from head to toe that I couldn't stop itching and was making myself raw in places like I'd scratched so hard I had broken blood vessels underneath my skin - thank God that only happened once!), I have also gotten massive stomach/intestinal pain resulting in "E-Coli" like symptoms.  So, I'm right there with ya - I seriously think I'm sort of a freak sometimes because I thought I was the only one like this! Thats so weird.  My dh's mom can't even touch sesamie sead or she gets a huge rash.  I don't itch or having trouble breathing, just get sick.  Allergies are so weird.  I cant figure them out at all.  I can touch the stuff I'm allergic too like I can touch fish. But if you cook fish next to my steak I will get sick.  Thats crazy that yours gets worse at diffrent times of the month.  So do you just avoid all the things that you have reactions too?  I'm not sure if my get worse at diffrent times I just avoid them.  I get so sick I don't want to experiment.

Appletree, do you think that some of yours could be due to mold, the peanuts, and cashews and mushrooms, are always on lists to avoid with mold problems, which could also could have to do with nasal allergies.  I went to a doctor last year that also does alternative medicine and she said that alot of the times if you have to get up at around 3am every morning to pee you probably have an allergy to mold, and that is when the peak as the spores multiply and your body is trying to flush it out.

There is an allergy test called ALCAT (ALCAT.com or
http://www.alcat.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1
It is expensive, but tests for very specific foods and chemicals and allergens.  That way you know if it is the food or the chemical they spray it with that you are allergic to.  Also they will send you a rotation diet with the foods that you are not allergic to, so that you don't become allergic to them, and they tell you how to test some of the foods in a few months after being very strict.  I had a friend that could have only one kind of fish, but allergic to all others.  It was very specific.  You can pick the number of foods that they test and the prices are much less.  My lo2 is allergic to corn, apples and strawberries, and something else that I haven't been able to pinpoint.  But the first three things make her pee like crazy, my in laws think that we are crazy, but it is true.  I can't believe the effects that food can have.  I had an uncle that was so allergic to foul, that he couldn't eat food that was fried in the same oil as chicken and couldn't even sleep on a feather pillow or have vaccines (cultured with eggs, I think).  My brother  when he was about 17 yrs old, reacted one time to raw eggs in homemade ice cream ( in the 70's they used to put it, can you believe it), he was saying there were ants in his bed, we were camping and he was sleeping outside , so I faintly remember my parents going nuts trying to find the ants, as he was all broken out like he had been bitten, then he got deathly sick and went temporarily blind.  He had had the same recipe of ice cream all his life, but that one time he reacted, and then one other time, but not as severe, then he was extra careful about eggs.  But as a baby had reacted badly to a vaccine, I figure it was the eggs, but I came to that conclusion recently since reading on food allergies, with my lo and my mom telling me about his reaction (I wasn't around for the shots, he is 12yrs older).  Anyway, my point to all of this is it can do strange things and now with all of the chemicals  and additives involved  it makes it hard to figure out what is what.  I'll stop there.

That is VERY interesting.......I almost always get up at 3ish a.m. to pee.  ??? ??? ??? ???

I am allergic to mold and dust and pollen and grass and trees and ......the list goes on and on.  I avoid the things I'm severely allergic to  - oranges, mushrooms, and cashews, I think there's something else but am drawing a blank right now.  However, sometimes I'll eat something if it's got an ingredient I'm allergic to in it but I always always have 1 or 2 bottles of Benadryl on hand.  A few years ago I'd go through a bottle every 2 or 3 days but now a bottle usually last me a couple weeks or so.  I'm gonna check out that site - sounds cool about the specific testing.

Don't you think it's bizarre that it was never like this til my rollover?  :-\

It is bizarre.  But  after the last few years, nothing shocks me about the body.  Everything is connected.   Maybe the injury caused your immune system to go into overdrive, I personally think that being 'out' of allignment can affect alot of other body systems, and then your body started reacting to foods.  Your immune system just can't handle as much as it should be able to, maybe it is the chemicals, the mold with the nuts and mushrooms, and chemicals on the oranges, and lobster and crab, well they clean the bottom of the ocean floor, so they may be contaminated and with a supressed immune system, it may affect you more.  So there is my theory, for what it is worth.

I had the same type of thing happen with eggs. When I was in my teens I would be sick for a couple of days as though I had food poisoning. It was disgusting. It would only happen when I'd eat them plain. If they were cooked in something (i.e. cake, cookies) I was fine. After I go married my husband introduced me to this alternative solution. His brother is a nurse and took an alternative medicine class and learned how to do NAET. It's really different, but it worked. I was lucky to have relatives with all the supplies needed to do it (they have these vials with everything you can imagine you could be allergic to) for free. Our family jokes that it's voo doo (sp?) magic, but we're all for it because it really does work. My grandma-in-law was so allergic to cats if she even walked where a cat had been she'd not be able to breathe. She'd go in for shots all the time. Now she can even cuddle with cats!

What does NAET stand for?   Do they use the sublingual drops to treat it, does it include hormone therapy, this may be similar to the doc I was talking about.

It stands for Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques. It might be the same thing you tried. I looked it up on-line and saw some people use acupuncture and acupressure. That sounds a little different from how I was treated, but I'm sure there are more ways to do it. When I had it done I had to hold a vial with an egg in it and my brother-in-law used a vibrating massager and then he did muscle testing to see if it was eliminated. I also couldn't touch an egg for the next 24 hours. It's really hard to explain since it's different, but I hope that helped.

Huh?  Can allergists do this?  Who would you go to to try it?  I've never tried anything cus I get so sick.  I just don't want to go experimenting. I got so sick off of fish once I got dehydrated, it was terrible.  Anywho I would be open to try maybe.

Chantal, you can get Omega 3's (the good stuff in fish) from flaxseeds, almonds and other foods as well.  Smart Balance even makes a peanut butter with Omega 3 acids in it, I have it every AM on my oatmeal, very tasty.

Interesting stuff, I'm kinda wanting more info on the "voodoo magic stuff". lol   ~S~........I totally agree with your theory.  This has nothing to do with allergies but where I hit my head in the rollover, that's where my gray hair is coming in at. CRAZY!   Wendee

Now that one makes total sense to me, as gray hair can be a result of trauma or stress on the body, an illness, etc.

Okay.... as a substitute for NAET or as an addition to NAET you could learn EFT.. Emotional Freedom Technique. You do it yourself and you can use it to clear allergies. Learn it on the web for free. I cleared Iron with it and cured my anemia.

Also... with a stressful event such as an emotional event, illness, or injury the hypothalamus gets thrown off, which throws off your adrenal and thyroid gland. They regulate immunity and allergies among other things. Please go to drrind.com to see more about your body's hormonal systems and how everything can be thrown off.

And post more about Naet please!! ;)

You could give Kinesiology a try to check out your allergies? They can check what your body needs too. It's done through muscle testing.

So If I go to someone who specializes in allergies they arent gonna make me sick are they?  I had a doc. once who said since I hadn't ate fish in so long I should try it cus some people grow out of it.  Yeah I threw up for 2days I though I was gonna die, I slept in the bathroom.  My dad thinks its in my head.  I am allergic to mold, and when I was in Texas my asthma was really bad.  But now that i'm in montana I'm doing a lot better.  How do they test for food allergies?

My sister can't do most raw veg / fruit.   She has a very limited variety of things she can eat.  (basically she can have grapes / raspberries / banana / mango  and I think citrus).  If she comes into contact with them, she gets a mild anaphalactic reaction, her mouth sorts of swells a bit and she gets an itchy mouth.  Very strangely, she can eat apples / pears etc when cooked.  She can't eat raw tomatoes, but can cooked.  The only thing she can't eat raw or cooked is celery!  She can't do nuts except brazils and cashews I think.  So when we go to mums, we have to eat well cooked veg cos she can't do 'crunchy'.

She is the classic, new allergy every 7 yrs.  eczema at age 1, fruit/ veg at 7, asthma age 14, nickel from age 21.  She's stil got them and she in her 30's now.

There's a UK site on Kinesiology www.kinesiologyfederation.org or one that I found with US pracitioners is www.kinesiology.com

Find out more about it there. See what you think. I used it to decide on which suppls to take when ttc but a friend used it with both her sons for their allergies with great success.

NAET practitioners use Kinesiology to determine what you are allergic to and if the treatment worked!

Sorry I couldn't give too much info on NAET. It really may be worth a shot looking into. Here are some websites that may be a little more informative that I found really quick. http://www.naet.com/ . I also found some sites where people were not too thrilled about it so I would really research and weigh all your options first.

Can you send me that search? I developed Ulcerative Coolitis after NAET (no more migraines or bad PMS though) and would like to see what others have to say.

"Say Goodbye to Illness" is a book by the Dr. who invented Naet.

Naet is based on the idea that your brain remembers a bad reaction to an allergen. By doing accupressure on certain points while exposed to the allergen (you just have to be near it, not eat it) good Chi is circulating while near the allergen so it reprograms the brain to accept the substance in the future. I am just wondering if I traded one problem for another since I developed Colitis between treatments. I had 5 I believe.

Bioset is a similar procedure. TTFN

Chantel, the way that they tested for my food allergies was with a bazillion (like that word) "scratches" in the back and both arms by my shoulders.  Each prick had the allergen in it so it would swell and react to the scratch in that area or it wouldn't. If it did then you were obviously allergic to whatever it was.  (It was really expensive and ins. didn't cover it) Anyhow, for about 1 1/2 yrs after I had the test if I ate like oranges say, then that scratch spot on my arm would swell along with whatever other reaction I had.  Crazy.  I would rather try the other ways that the other ladies are talking about. It sounds a lot less invasive.  Wendee

The way they test for NAET is through muscle testing. What you do is you hold whatever you're allergic to and stick your arm out straight in front of you. When they ask if you are allergic to whatever it is they push on your arm. If you are able to hold it straight the answer is no if not, you're allergic.

That isn't what I had done.  They had some 'vials', and a 'shot thingy' (I'm in a fog, can't think of words, sorry) , oh, first you tell them where you hurt and rate the pain, and if your nose was running or what ever the big complaint was, then they would squirt some stuff from the vials under your tongue, wait 15 seconds and rate your pain, if it was to much (there were different strengths), then you would your symptoms would get worse, like my shoulder started hurting really bad, so they squirted saline, and it stopped (both with in seconds), then they tried different strengths, and different stuff, progesterone, I can't remember what all, oh tree, grass and mold, anyway you could tell with in seconds.  They would mix up your batches, and you could use it up to 4 times aday.  And it really helped, but was very expensive, so we were not able to continue.  You end up using less the longer you are on it, I still am keeping it as an option in the back of my mind.  but they have a theory on adrenaline, hormones and allergies, affecting your hormones, here are some articles, this isn't the doctor I saw, but he is the doctor that treated my doc and introduced her to the method.  http://www.onlineallergycenter.com/

The gray hair thing-well, I don't even have a theory (could be the fog I'm in)but at the same time makes sense.  Leave it, you could start a fad.

I have been trying to do this detox thing for 2 mos, never can get my act together to do it totally, but it is almost like an elimination diet, but not quite, but I am afraid that I have a gluten intolerance, and possibly milk, I really need to get my act together and do it.  I kind of wish, I would really react to things instead of sly little discomforts that really effect you but are kind of hidden where they come from.  I would really like to do the ALCAT, but until then, I think I will do this other thing.

Hmm intresting when I get sometime I will sit down, and look all this stuff up.  I guess with me since I get a serious reaction, and its to food's not hard to avoid I really haven't needed to get tested.  I mean my dh doesn't like fish, you don't need mushrooms, or cashews.  So I'm ok with avoiding them.  I'm not sure with wild game so far its just deer meat.  I know that since I've been in Montana my asthma is almost gone, and my allergies are almost gone too.  I use to get really sick when we got our new dog, I'm allergic to cats and dogs, but I tore up my carpet, and keep him out of our room, and I'm good.  But can not be around cats.

I love to fish, and can handle fish all day long, and don't get sick.  So I cant see myself spending tons of money just so I can eat fish again.  But who knows.  Thanks for all the info its really intresting stuff.  Weird, but intresting.
