formula intolerance?
« on: July 02, 2006, 06:58:29 am »
My five month old has been bottle fed exclusively with breast milk. I started introducing formula a week ago as I want to phase out breastfeeding. He was fine with a bottle of formula per day, and even seemed to prefer it to breastmilk! I have been slowly increasing the number of formula feeds each day. Since doing this, his bowel movements have increased from one per day up to 3 per day. This morning I noticed a fleck of blood in his stool (it was a tiny amount, about the size of a grain of rice). Should try a goats milk or soy formula instead or is this a normal reaction to a change of diet?

If you are noticing blood in his stools you should get him checkout by a doctor, it could be a sign that he is lactose intolerant.
I can't offer any specific medical opinion/diagnosis.

I'd definately go see the doctor before trying anything else. My wee one was put on a lactose free milk and it turned out he didn't have a lactose intolerance at all. I've now got him on cow & gate comfort (i'm in the uk) this milk has less lactose but still some in it and its a lovely milk. Hope your wee one is ok.  :)

carlaq - just read on your other post your Lo has had to go through open heart surgery, I would definetely go back to your doctors if you are at all unsure about the blood you found in his stool.  I hope your Lo is recovering well.

babytn - where are you from in the UK?

Thank you for your advice.  He was very irritable all day yesterday so his routine was completely messed up. He had no high temperature &  no more blood in stool since then but 4 more greenish motions, despite me feeding him breastmilk all day. I will call the doctor today.
When does this parenting caper get easier??
