When did your LO self wean?
« on: April 15, 2014, 18:59:53 pm »
With both my boys I initiated weaning when I was pregnant again and wanted a little break before starting with a new baby.  Both of them weaned very easily.  With DD I don't really have a desire to push her to wean, mainly because she is so attached to it and I'm not dealing with the screaming!  I'm also not in a hurry to wean her (yet!) since she's my last and I do enjoy it.  But I'm just curious when other's LOs have weaned.  She will be 2 in June.

C rejected me at 18mos when we were on holiday. I think the change in routine and staying in a hotel freaked her out and by then she was having a BT feed and a few cheeky snacks during the day if she felt like asking for "boobies!" ;D I was initially devastated that she'd rejected me but after 3 days I got my head around it. We then returned home and she began to ask but by then I'd decided I was mentally done and so told her the milk was all gone. We had "Boobies, peeeeeease!" For a few days but nothing more than that. So it was kind of half/half!

I fed both of mine until 26mo and I had to gently encourage them to wean. I offered exciting alternatives like extra stories with daddy instead. We did it very gradually and they were happy with the alternatives and I didn't refuse until they had gone several days without a feed. There were never any tears. Colby asked if there was milk there for a few weeks after weaning but was happy with just cuddles when I said no there was none left.  So they didn't really self wean but I only gently encouraged them. I think without my encouragement they would have gone on significantly longer. They had shown no signs of losing interest before I pushed the agenda ;) And Cadan had fed all through my pregnancy and I tandem for 6 months with Colby even though I'm sure there was little milk for him at certain points.

I kind of wonder how long it will go on for because I can't imagine dd ever wanting to give it up. Even now if she hasn't bf'd long enough to her liking she says "more milk!" When I try to take her off! Lol

I'm pretty sure A would still be nursing if I hadn't decided for her to wean at I think 25 months.

The WHO recommend BFing until "2yo and beyond" if that makes you feel any better. No need to be feeling pressure to wean just yet hun. If you're both enjoying it then just carry on I say.

No pressure at all I think by 3 kids I'm over worrying about that. Just never having reached this point I was curious when other babies wean. I'm in no hurry since it's not likely I will bf another baby again and I know I will be devastated when it's done for good.

DS weaned around 18 mo and DD at 16. It was kind of proactive on my part in that I didn't offer but they didn't seem to have a problem. They both seemed to go in phases where they were really attached and then waned down..it was during one of the down periods that the weaning happened. It seemed that once I finished the night feeds the rest went naturally.

That sounds like how my ds1 was. Dd always has been very attached and still is! I don't mind at all though, it's lovely. :)

Yes, although G is having more formula than C ever did while I'm at work she is by far he biggest boobie addict!! I can't see her wanting to give up easily!

I wish my kids had gone that long! Both self-weaned - DD at 13 months after an illness, and DS at almost exactly 12 months, just because.
