11 mth old keeps waking early !!
« on: September 26, 2007, 11:15:49 am »
Hi,m

We've been through a whole O/T deal in the last 2-3 weeks which we fixed with shorter A times and early bedtimes. Our LO never was much of a 7am riser ( :P  :P) but he's back to 6.15am then 5.30am then 5.50am then 5.20am wakings (last one is today). He sleeps approx. 2 hours in the daytime and goes a max of 3hrs 40 bt. sleeps.

He looks like a 3rd top tooth is coming through and he's refusing the spoon (breakfast today so far). We've given him Tylenol before bed lately to help. No NWs but he's definitely stirred, re-settling alone.

Is his schedule looking OK (see below) and how to I extend his wakeup time ?

Wakes 5.20-6.15am latest
S 3hrs 30 max later (45 if I wake him or 1 hr 10/20 if not)
S 3 hrs 30 later (sleeps usually about 1hr 10)
Bedtime max. 3hrs 40 later, usually by 3hrs 30.

I haven't given the times as they depend on awake times.

Deb,
I would let him sleep for that first nap and not wake him. Does he fight the afternoon nap if he takes a longer am nap?  He might need a bit more daytime sleep. The average for his age is about 3 hours.  I would maybe try putting him to bed a little earlier and see what happens.  Early waking tends to be due to overtiredness?  Does he wake happy, or grumpy?

Apologies, I've forgtoten your name but I'm sure you've helped me before ...  :-[

He goes to sleep fussing/crying (within 15 mins. all sleeps) and he's sleeping the longest out of our (now demised  :'( Spirited babies thread)....All the others are doing 2 hrs, maybe 2 hrs 30 tops.

I let him go for as long as he wanted this am after the 5.20am wakeup and he slept 1hr 20 mins. He fussed a little as he woke but he was super happy afterwards (we have some SA going on too). He's now down after 4 hrs 13 mins. A time nearly 30 mins. in and I doubt he'll go 1 hr. His bedtimes are always "sensible" bt. 3hrs 15 - 3 hrs. 50.

I'll make sure we're on the low side of those nos. tonight. BTW, you think the 6.15am latest wakings are habit or O/T ? He's probably only ever slept till 7am a handful of times !

If he wakes at 6:15 exactly everyday then they might be habit, but I would guess O/T.  I do believe they are setting up new spirited baby support threads.  Take a look in EASY for them, ok.

Myia,
Bedtime was 3.5hrs after 2 good naps of 1hr 20 in the am and 1 hr 18 in the pm. He still woke at 5.45am !! I actually heard him stir at 5am so I guess he squeezed in another cycle.

Is he actually O/T or getting too much daytime sleep ? Layla told another mum of an 11-mth old to cut the am nap to 45/60 mins. Samijoe also told me to do this a few weeks' back. I had mixed success with this in the past but I expected him to start fighting naps or shortening the am nap.

Could this need for daytime sleep be the teething alone ?

Deb,
My little girl has always needed more than the average amount of sleep.  Sometimes shortening the am nap does help around this age.  I believe, if I know the post you are refereing to, that the baby was getting 1.5-2 hours for a first nap and 1.25-1.5 for a second nap, or vice versa.  Your baby isn't getting a little less than that.

You can certainly try it. I wouldn't limit his first nap to less that 1 hour yet because I fear that if he isn't already tired he might become overtired.  He isn't fighting naps is he?  Do you think if he took an hour mornig nap that his afternoon nap would be longer?

Normally he sleeps longer in the pm if his am nap is shorter. Today he's in the crib for his pm nap after 3hrs 30 (I'm trying to take him out to a playdate in an hour or so !) and we'll see how long he takes to settle (yesterday I waited 4 hour and he went off in 5 mins !)

I don't think he's always needed more than average amounts of sleep but he has ALWAYS woken before 7am, usually bt. 6-6.15am. I just want to work out the best the time up a bit as he should do longer at night. He def. seems to like early-ish bedtimes too......

Will keep at it.

Deb,
Just curious..can you give a window of when your baby goes to bed (knowing that it depends on his wake time, etc).  Basically, how many hrs is baby sleeping at night, generally.

He goes to bed about 3.25-3.5 hrs after he wakes from pm nap so I can't give a time. He sleeps 10.5-12 hrs a night, also depends.

Why do you ask ?

Hi,
I'm the mom who posted about the other 11 month old waking early.  I am wondering the same thing--is his early wake time due to overtiredness, too much daytime sleep, or just habit and his own body clock? I'm interested to see how things progress with you and your LO.  Good luck--I'll be thinking of you in the early morning!

Hi,
We're in day 5 of longer naps and Bubba is still not waking later than 6am ! He does 3.5, almost 4 then 3.5 hr A times and he goes down pretty well if fussily all sleeps.

It could be U/T as he should be more rested after 4 decent days surely ?

What has the last day or two looked like?  Sometimes it takes a while to get out of the overtired cycle.

Myia,
Bubba's actually started waking later, around 6.30am but at the same time I have shortened his am nap to one hour. Trouble is, he is now taking longer to settle for his pm nap (in crib at about 3.5hrs) and only sleeping 43-45 mins ! Should I extend the A time a touch to nearly 4 hrs and see if that helps ?

I'd hate to go backwards now........:P

So he wakes at 6:30, naps at 9:30 (?) until 10:30 and then again naps at 2?  Is he grumpy when he wakes after the second nap? Has he been settling well at night?

He wakes at 6.30am and goes own about 10am for an hour. Today he went down at 2.53pm for his pm nap. He may sleep longer as his A time was a bit better than the last 2 days.

No I'm thinking how long before I shorten his am nap to 45 mins. to get an earlier and longer pm nap ?

He sleeps Ok at night. Stirs a couple of times but he's sleeping till 6.30am so something's right !
