My homemade baby food!
« on: June 16, 2006, 03:19:17 am »
Ok so I am using this handy dandy lil machine to make up some lovely homemade food for Owen's first fruits and veggies next week...

I poached an apple, peach, pear, and a bit of squash, I cooked them til they were really soft - like falling apart and I ran them through this thingy.  Everything came out, well - kinda grainy? for lack of a better word.  Is this ok?  Its not lumpy, just like well yeah, grainy.  I just have no idea what it should look like, and I know it isn't gonna be like the jarred food.  I don't want him to choke or gag naturally.

I am not experienced with avocados... what do you do to them before you give them to LO?  Do they need to be cooked?

Also, are these food ok for my LO with reflux.  I tried to stay away from anything overly acidic.  I am re thinking the peaches... yea?

Lastly, sweet potato, is it ok to just bake one off in the microwave and scoop it out of the skin and freeze it?  Or is there some other way I should cook it?

I am no Betty Crocker!   8)

TIA,
Zoey

You know I totally forgot about bananas!!!

And not to sound completely stupid... but, sigh -  is avocado the ingredient in guacamole?

Sigh, I do cook for my DH and I but it's like chicken, fish, veg, potato/rice.... I am a very picky eater so, anything not REALLY common, I don't know much about.  HOWEVER, I won't let that rub off on Owen!  He will try everything LOL.

Thanks Bec!

oh yes, love that left over avo!!!  yum yum yum, guess what Rachel's having for lunch now!!

sounds like you have it all sorted, if I found something was too grainy then I added some water or cooking liquid or milk to make it more sloppy.  However I never make anything as sloppy as the jars and I am pleased I never did because it has made the transition to more lumpy food much easier.

Rachel adores peaches as long as they are with banana, she also loves Mango with banana - and I love both those combinations because they don't need any cooking and freeze well.

sweet potato, I cook them in 3 ways:
1 - boil and then puree with some cooking water
2 - microwave and mash down with a fork/puree with water/milk
3 - cut into chunks and roast with some olive oil and then mash and mix with water - Rachel's fave!!

hth  good luck

That's a neat little machine!  May I ask where you got it and for how much?  I use one of those hand mixers that would fit down into a glass, if you know what I mean?  Not the traditional handmixer with the 2 blades that you put on.  It works great!

I really thinks its cool.  He doesn't eat alot so I don't need to make huge quantities.  I got it from target along with 2 trays made for freezing the baby food.  The machine was about 15 dollars!  Its really easy to put together and clean.  Here it is:  http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-3/qid=1150501030/ref=sr_1_3/601-8100795-0122531?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B00006G9LI

They have it at a bunch of places if they don't have Target near you.  It's made by Kidco.

I steam all the veggies I make for dd, it keeps some extra nutrients that are lost in the water when boiled, I then use my food processor (I make larger batches) and add a few spoons of the water that the veggies were steamed in. I have the freezer cubes with lids (same brand as your hand mixer) so I then pop everything in the freezer.

Cheryl, that mixer and the trays are available in Canada as well, I got the trays in a local store, didn't get the mixer as I received a food processor as a gift when dd was born but I did see it in a store here.

My dd hated avocado on its own but loved banana so I processed 2 avocados with 2 bananas and filled the cube trays. Avocado and banana are particularly high in nutrients and calories compared to other fruits/veggies so they're great for the los.

Hi first time mom, what store did you see the mill and trays in canada. And how did the avocado and banana work out, did it turn color or got a weird texture once frozen.

I've most of LO's baby food this time around- just about every fruit and veggie puree. And then every meat/pasta/veggie combo! He's 10  months so I am starting with more finger food and lumpy foods. I've used my steamer ALOT and food processor. THen everything in ice cube trays- I have about 7. I cook up several batches on a weekend and I am good for a couple of weeks. Avocados are great frozen and as finger foods. I add a little lemon jiuce to avocados, bananas, and apples and they don't brown.

Sylvie, the mixer and all accessories are sold in a store called Crayons (on Kingston Rd in the upper beaches), there's another Crayons that is on Bayview, if I'm not mistaken. The mix froze well, didn't turn brown and thawed well (didn't need to use lemon juice) and dd loved the taste of the combo!

Like a previous post. Well done you for cooking your own food.

I hadn't really cooked until I had DD and I now love it. My two favourite cooking things are my mouli (kinda like a sieve) and my steaming saucepans.

You can steam nearly every veg and I find its harder to over cook things (useful when I get distracted with something the kids need). I use the steamer for sweet potatoes but then put them through the mouli. This is important because of the starch. Other foods to put through the mouli or sieve is apricots, potoatoes, peas.

Now DD is a bit older I still find the steamer great. It takes all of 10 / 15 mins to peel and chop some veg (I might even do this at the start of the day to avoid have moany children under my feed near the end of the day). I boil potatoes in the bottom for mashing or just plain then on the other tiers I have perhaps carrots and broccoli or greens etc. I then put some meat in the oven or grill to cook and I've got a hot meal on the table for both DD and DH each evening. If I have more time I try and make something like a cottage pie or spag bol and freeze up portions. I've just started DS with some solids and there is no reason why he can't have some of this stuff.

Good luck.

Keep going with it. It's a huge gift to give to your children in my opinion. Trust me it has to be nice too!!!!

J

p.s Annabel Karmel recipes are a great starting point and gives you ideas of how good things can taste.

Yes, it is fun! I use the freezer bags and label as well. Gee, never thought about it lasting one month...guess I went a little overboard...I could feed an army of babies! Oh well, at least there's variety to pick from!

I have read that they can last 6-7 months.  I guess it depends how much freezer space you have!!! ;D
Renee has had yams and squash and liked both.  Tomorrow we start with applesauce then I was going to do pears, then avacado then peas.

I was looking for where I read the 1 month thingy...

http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/pureestore.htm

"6. Be sure to label the bag with the date of preparation as well as the type of
food. The baby food cubes should be used within a month of freezing. "

It would be fab if they lasted more then a month!

Can he eat carrots at 5 months?  I read something about nitrates.
