Whew! You've been busy little posters!
So while the supermodel babies are into 18 mth pants, I've discovered Asher has short little legs and a long torso. :? His belly needs the 12 mth pants, but I have to roll them up twice! He hardly seems chubby, so why do they make the waists on baby pants so tight? So they don't crawl out of them? It's forever pulling down his diaper though. I feel like I'm always trying to fix his plumber's crack! What to do??
Schae, I'm so fasicinated by the tissue salts! I'm going to have to look for them at the store! Glad you mentioned them!
Meat, I want to try soon, just a hassle to make. I'd need left overs since I feed new foods in the morning, but I don't feel like cooking a chicken dinner at 8 am! Tried tofu this morning and I thought for sure he'd hate it (didn't do anything to it and I thought it tasted nasty), but he liked it!
Heather, when I taught Asher to use a sippy, I put EBM in it. Then I switched to water since it's hard for me to pump enough. The few times I've had extra, he gets weirded out since he's expecting water! I've kept trying though, and it seems I can get him used to the EBM again if I just kept offering in the sippy. Could you offer two sippies and call them by name so she recognizes and knows what to expect (milk, water, juice, etc)? I always name the foods as he's eating them. He seems to react better to what I may offer on the spoon if he knows what's coming.
Finger foods, Asher is a pro and prefers them to spoon-feeding. But he'll tolerate my spoon-feeding if I alternate with finger foods. Some foods just don't make good finger foods, like squash. When we started out, I just slowly upped the texture in the puree. We had lots of gagging, but I just kept at it each day for the first few bites (then might blend/mash more for the rest of the meal). I figured the only way he was going to learn to chew and manuever textures in his mouth was with practice. Once I knew he liked a food pureed (like pears), I tried it as a finger food. It took a couple weeks before he even understood the concept, and even then, there was lots of gagging. I knew he liked the taste of pears, so I figured it was just a matter of getting used to the new texture and shape. Just kept offering and eventually he was a pro. He still gags each time he tries a new food though, whether he likes the taste or not. It's just another new texture he has to get used to. Other things we tried in the beginning besides ripe banana and pear were cooked sweet potato chunks kinda cold, peas (though the shells are a challege for them to get used to at first), green bean halves, and over-cooked spiral pasta.
3 liquid feeds, we're technically down to three, though I break up one into two halves to use in place of a solid food snack (only offer one side for those). He was already trying to drop the bedtime feed because he wasn't hungry, so I switched the two mid day feeds to halves in order to preserve the bedtime feed. Works most of the time (sometimes he's still not hungry enough). I still think he's prolly getting a good 24 oz though. Any less and I'd worry and start trying to give it in place of water at meals. I didn't think they were supposed to drop to 16 oz until age 2? I can't remember. My ped. seemed to want him to be at 24 or more still right now. Personally, I wouldn't drop until it seemed neccesary.
Jaime, this is the first I've heard of David Elkind. Any thoughts/opinions on his books?
Deborah, how very frustrating!! I really hope you can get to the bottom of it!
Temper tantrums, yes, we've been dealing with this for a month or two. It's become even more imperative that Asher gets good naps or he becomes an emotional time bomb. I've seen him cry simply because he dropped a toy! I think a good part of this is his high needs personality so I'm pretty laid back about it. I now give him 5 minute warnings before I pick him up for anything. As he's playing, I'll just casually start talking about taking a nap soon. Sometimes he comes to me first and we can just go, other times I pick him up when it's time and he's relatively okay. I also tell him before I'm going to interrupt him to check his diaper, nurse, eat, etc. This has helped avoid a lot of meltdowns we used to have. I also pick my battles. Some things just aren't worth it!
Tammy, the letting go was the precursor to standing alone and then walking for Asher. It was also just a few seconds before he'd plop down.
Teeth Count -- Asher has 8 now (4 top/bottom). 6 of which came within 1 month of each other! Let's hope he's done for a while! And that lonely pair of 2 bottom teeth does make for some adorable smiles!!
