refuses lumpy food
« on: March 23, 2006, 19:49:23 pm »
Hiya, I started weaning my little one properly when she was 6 months old. She has three meals a day, which has been easy so far. The trouble is she wont seem to eat any food that i mash or anything with lumps. I have tried to puree half and leave a few lumps and still she wont eat. But just puree, and she'll eat the lot.
She will however eat finger food, buscuits, toast, fruit etc. If she chokes she carries on eating but not if its her normal food, as soon as she chokes a little thats it.

Is there any suggestions of what foods i can use to make lumps that she might take?

Another little problem i am having is she loves baby Jars of porridge or musili but she wont eat any of them if i make them myself with oats etc. Any suggestions as to how i can convince her to eat it seen as though its the same?!

Thank you  :)

I have a theory about this texture business, because my DD is the same way or was until just a week or so ago.  I think that when babies are eating finger foods, they know that they will have to chew them.  But with purees, they don't expect lumps, and when they get them don't know what to do about it.  Even though they are softer lumps, it freaks some babies out.  I think you just have to go nice and slow and keep trying.  That's what we've done.  Also, you can buy a stage 2 and stage 3 dinner of the same variety.  Feed bites from the stage 2, and then give one bite of the stage 3.  Alternate as much or as little as your baby will tolerate.

And I don't know why your LO would refuse the porridge.  Do you make your homemade with other stuff that isn't in the baby jars?

I have started introducing pasta and rice to ds's diet. I noticed that when blended down they are both pretty textured still. He tried a rice dish yesterday and gagged and was sick. I tried it again today and added more milk to the mixture and he took the lumps and bits of rice like a dream. I also gave hime frequent sip of milk after every couple of mouthfuls.

I just used porridge oats and added milk. I was thinking that maybe the jars are sweeter and thats why she loves them.
I have tried giving her stage 2 jar with the lumps, the same flavour as the puree she likes and she wont eat it. Also her favourite puree is carrot and Potato baby jar, but when i made this myself and mashed it she wouldnt eat that either.
Hard work this weaning!! lol

Ps. I might try the rice and pasta idea, thank you  ;)

I have just started DD on lumpier food some times she is ok with it sometimes she gags on it. She is teething at the moment so i think it hurts to try and chew anything to big. I am just going to perservere and see how she goes.
