How to combine nursing and solids?
« on: May 13, 2006, 23:25:05 pm »
Hello,

My LO is almost 6 months, I BF him, he's already got few vegtable tastings.

I know the quantities of solids he's supposed to get for his age, but how should I time and combine nursing and solids?

Thank you!

When I first started solids, I'd nurse first, then after a while try some solids. Once we were up to 2 or 3 meals a day, I'd do one meal first then nurse (usually lunch, as breakfast she was too hungry! :)) while keeping the other two meals after nursing. A few days later I went ahead and did an afternoon/evening meal/snack before nursing. The last meal to do before a BF ended up being breakfast, simply because it was easiest for us to nurse first thing in the morning.

Since then, Natalie has given up nursing on her own, much to my chagrin, so it's a moot point - sometimes she demands a drink first (from a cup), sometimes food, but at a year old now, I figure she knows her own mind..... :)

We stuck with nursing first, then each solids meal about 1 hr later. We kept it that way until he transitioned to whole milk at 1 yr. I liked doing it that way so I could ensure he was filling up on breastmilk first, but it really comes down to what works out best for you and your LO!

When we were in the introductory phase of solids, we would stick to our breastfeeding schedule, which was every 3 hrs like clockwork. We just added one solids feeding (and it was a very small feeding in the beginning) between two breastfeeds, so about 1.5 hrs after breastfeeding. That seemed to work best for us since she woudn't be experimenting while she's super hungry (otherwise she'd get frustrated wanting to eat more than learning how to use a spoon) or super full (otherwise she'd show absolutely no interest in eating at all).
Breastmilk was her primary source of nourishment during the first couple months while she was getting acquainted with solids. After she got comfortable with one solids feeding per day, we added a second solids feeding which was also between two breastfeeds and did this for a while. We took it slow so the transition was over several months until we were about 1/2 breastmilk 1/2 solids for the day where she'd have 3 solids feeding.
