Introducing spoons and BLW
« on: February 05, 2009, 14:39:41 pm »
We did BLW with Ellie this time and it was brilliant. The only thing is she doesn't do spoons. I can get her to eat off one in the morning but she has no interest in using it so I'm still feeding her. But any other time in the day if I try her with a spoon she will not take it. I just tried to give her a yogurt and she wouldn't take it. Once I snuck a taste in her mouth she was fine and gobbled the thing up. So how do I get her to eat off a spoona nd feed herself?

With Shay we did puree's and he just took the spoon when he was ready. I suddenly realised that he was feeding himself really early. Now it's not mess that is a problem or anything like that, but they have to learn how to use cutlery at some point don't they!

I'm interested in the responses as we're having a similar issue ::)  Would definitely do BLW again coz the advantages far outweight this one little hiccup but it is irritating when we're in a rush :)

I'm interested too  ;)

Alice still likes to feed herself with her grubby little mitts but I do load up forks and spoons with food and she will feed herself with them til she gets bored - then she'll start to pick the food off the spoon and fork as I'm handing it to her . . . not sure if I'm doing the 'right' thing IYKWIM?

Still love the BLW route tho  ;D

My ds was really interested in spoons and forks when he was little (he is 22 months), so I just started to give him a spare one at while I was feeding him and he pretty much got the idea! Now he uses both his spoon and fork!

As you become more clear about who you really are, you'll be better able to decide what is best for you - the first time around

Diana, did you do BLW with your little guy?

I let DS and DD1 just hold the spoon and get on with it but DD2 just has no interest in it.  If it's something she REALLY loves like strawberry yoghurt, she'll let me spoon feed her - failing that, she wont use a spoon and she won't let me use a spoon with her either ::)  It's like she's refusing to relinquish her rein over what goes in her mouth :P  Ah well, I guess I just have to keep at it.

Any luck Faye?

I did blw with Shelby, best way to do it!!

Shelby has been using a spoon for about 2-3 months (ish) my brain is still mash :P So from about 16 months. She saw all of us using knives and forks and just wanted one herself.

Shelby used to pour her yogurt on her tray and scoop it in with her hand! That was nice!

I'd just leve the spoon on their tray, eventually they'll get the hang of it!!

I did BLW and did no spoon feeding at all and Leorah learned to use a spoon and fork just fine, before this I used to give her fruit and things to dip into her yoghurt. From very early on I gave her spoons and forks to play with. I think if you BLW you have to leave them to it as the whole point is you skip the spoon feeding and let LO take control of their eating, I recommend BLW 100% and to follow it through, they will use the spoon when they are ready which I believe for most kids is by the 18 month mark but even older toddlers will sometime resort to using their hands, I kow Leorah does.

Lol Jo, Mae does that with yoghurt too.  She's also sometimes treats it like a calipo lolly - i.e. she squeezes the pot and licks the bulging yoghurt at the top.  It's just when we're in a rush or something - it would be far easier to spoon feed her things, just simply because it'd be quicker to feed AND far quicker to clean up lol!  She just won't have it as we have done BLW all the way - she's never had puree etc.  When I try and feed her with a spoon (unless like I say it's yoghurt), she looks at me like I'm crazy :P

I've tried giving her a spoon to hold and let her get on with it but she still ends up doing the "pour and squidge" thing but only one handed as she's using the other hand to hold her spoon ::) haha!  Ah well, I guess I'll just have to be more patient - it'll happen when she's ready :)

I did BLW with Josie. She started picking up a spoon herself and now feeds herself fairly successfully. At the beginning when we had yoghurt I would have 2 spoons on the go and sometimes sneak one in myself while she was still loading.
The 2 spoons thing worked with Sam too.

BTW Ellie really looks like you Faye in that avatar - bit spooky.

Oooh thanks everyone.

I have tried just giving her a spoon with her food but she ends up finding that more interesting and plays with it instead of eating. Then she gets fed up and food goes on the floor but she still wants the spoon ::) :P

It's like with yogurts, she'll take it in the morning but any other time in the day she just won't. Guess I'll have to be brave and just give it to her! I can just imagine the delight of scooping with hands :D :P

I guess it's one of those things she will get when she is ready, just glad to know they do gte it eventually. But yes, Shay still uses his hands and I did puree's with him ::)

But I definately love BLW, will be doing it this time too. So much better.

I know the thread is a little old but I am so glad I read it since I was thinking of starting my own  :P

We did BLW and are having a terrible time with the spoon.  He will let me feed him off of it thing like soup and cereal, but not as interested in using it himself.  I was getting worried about him never getting the hang of it.

I was wondering about the spoon issue when we started BLW, but loved BLW and will do it again :)

Since coming on this thread I've tried to hold back on loading up the spoon for Alice - sometimes it's just easier tho  ::)

I now put a spoon (and sometimes fork) on her tray and in the last week she has started to have a go herself - we were away for a couple of days last week and she was using an adult spoon (forgot to take baby ones  ::)) to feed herself porridge - TBH she seemed to do better with the big spoon as she had more area to dig with IYKWIM? Am still in shock at the amount she puts in her mouth!!

I keep telling myself (just like Faye) that she will get it when she's ready - I remember stressing about A's sippy cup refusal when I was weaning her. She would only drink from it if I held it for her - and I thought I would always have to hold it . . . seems funny now when I watch her holding it one-handed and tipping it right back to get the last drop of milk LOL. Just like the sippy cup (and everything else I worried about) she will get it . . . just like all your LOs did / will.

Still think taking the BLW route was one of the best decisions I made - and would definitely do it again  ;D

Ahhhh, a girl after my own heart ;)

Ellie has started trying to use her spoon when I actually remember to give it to her. The only problem is mornings and lunches are so stressed I don't have time to be patient with her and by dinner she is tired and grouchy ::) But yes, they will get there. You don't see a 30yo using hands for dinner (unless it's fish and chips, mmmmmmm!) so they'll be fine!

A girl after my own heart too  ;) Tho I don't know why I'm so shocked TBH as she watches (and therefore copies me!) and I'm a bit of a ganet!!

Don't know what you mean about 30yo not using their fingers to eat tho - I'm turning 39 this year and I love finger foods (any foods TBH!) . . . am now fancying a portion of fish and chips out of the paper - I blame you for that Faye!
