What does your mom do different?  Do you think he just knows you will give in and give him a bottle and he likes the mommy time he gets?

I would harass my doc if I was you.  Are you sure he is not gaining?  They dont gain a whole lot at a time anymore?  I wish I could help.  I would try toast with different toppings, yogurt, hummos jam etc to see if he like it.  Keep trying...it will happen.

Funny you should ask...My mom is so careful to do things exactly the way I do.  I think I am dealing with a habit, and not so much hunger.  I will let it work out before I think of reducing the bottles.

just a thought, when i was introducing my LO to new flavours etc, i would spread some on rice cakes or crackers. he would eat them til the cows came home so it was a good way to get him used to other things. maybe try spreading a little of the baby food you use on crackers, waffle or toast at first as he will be used to that flavour and texture and then gradually try other things from there. if he resists the new flavours maybe try mixing some mashed veggies with the baby food and gradually change the amount over time. i still put veggie puree on my LOs toast or crackers sometimes cos he still loves it now.

also wanted to say follow your mummy instincts, if you think somethings not right then get it checked out again :-*
