5 week old help?
« on: February 28, 2007, 01:58:49 am »
Hi!!! So this lo is the second one, and I really really canīt remember the  first weeks with dd1. So he is really an angel, but... 2 of the A time of all the naps are soooo long and canīt seem to make him asleep at all. I usually put him into crib a little drowsy and sleeps on his own, but there are naps that does not exist, he stays up until next feed and then when feeding he falls asleep. So I give him the paci and he sucks the whole nap time!!! He is definetely not hungry believe me, I know, I change his diaper and swaddle and then place him and he simply does not fall asleep... any ideas? Help? Suggestions? Is he overtired? How can I make him take a nap and donīt ask for more food in order for him to sleep?
He is waking only once during the night... and his A time is usually 80 min or 60... on the good naps of course... thanks! Is it bad that he sleeps with a paci? I do not like that, but maybe he needs it?

Hi there,

This probably won't be of much help to you but i just want to say that you are not alone.  My 5 week old does the exact same thing :o   She will suck for a whole "nap" period but not sleep at all but then will sleep most of the next easy cycle i.e have little or no A time.  Guess it's what they need and as long as she's not grumpy, i'm leaving her to it.  i make sure though taht they do she does "rest" while sucking, i  don't play with her as then she will get overstimulated and cranky.    I can't force her to sleep  :)  Good luck, Sharon

Hi Daniella

from what I remember it is fairly normal for that to happen at your ds's age.  Growth spurt & over triedness could be the problems.  I know he probably doesn't have a set routine yet but could you give us an idea.  Did he do this for one of his naps today?  If he did can you post today's routine & we can take a look.

Niki

BTW irishgal......where are you living?  I'm in Cork

Hello,

You have been given some great advice.

I was wondering, is he happy while he's awake?  While most 5 week olds sleep most of the day away, the doesn't mean ALL babies will. The main point of EASY is to avoid accidental parenting (which you seem yo be avoiding) and to keep babies happy and growing (which also seems to be your case).

Try not to stress too much if your baby isn't doing what is written exactly in the book.  Enjoy that he's a happy boy!

Hey, thanks a lot... he is actually happy always... just that he sometimes ask for more food really soon... he sleeps a whole day and night, and then next day her sleeping during the day is irregular...  maybe he is still adapting. How can I recognise between real hunger and just the sucking reflex? He is on formula every 3 or 3.5 hours and 4 during the night (yay!) So basically he eats around 3.5 to 4.5 oz at each feed. 7 am, 10 am, 1:30, 5, 8 and finally 11 and 3 am. The nap between 7 and 10 and 5 and 8 are the hardest ones, he can be awake long... so that is why he asks sooner for food and eats a little less. Am I doing wrong?  If I wake him earlier he will not eat at all so I wait until he asks 30 min later...and it accomodates with dd1 routine just fine too. What do you think?  thanks a lot and i will try not to worry....that much.
