Transition to sippy cup + removing bib
« on: May 04, 2008, 12:12:49 pm »
I think my 16 mo old is addicted to her bottle- she will not drink milk out of a sippy cup.  She'll drink water and juice from it, and is able to drink from a regular cup, but only wants milk from her bottle.

Any ideas on how to get her off the bottle?

She's also refusing to wear her bib at mealtimes.  How can I get her to keep it on?

Just marking my spot here as I have same prob with sippy cup so am interested to see feedback.

Have the same issue with bibs with one of my LO's and I use those ones that you can slip over the head...  I make a huge deal about how nice it is a and how pretty she is and we all clap while she has it one etc...  they are cloth ones with a neck piece like a t-shirt almost ...but as luck would have it she actually managed to get that over her head at dinner tonight!!!! Think sometimes I am just better off stripping her down and let the food go where it will!

DD was like that.  She can drink from anything but milk has to be in the bottle.  The first time I made the switch at 12/13 mos, I tried the Nuby soft sprout (first picture).  IT was similar to sucking from a bottle and she did that for a few months.  Then she wanted her bottle back, so I switched to the Drop-Ins bottles so that she can still drink her milk but in a sitting position. Her old bottle was Dr. Browns.  I made the hole bigger and got her to drink from it like sippy from a straw cup as the liner just naturally collasped as she sucked.  I did make sure to widen the hole every few days.  After a month or so, I gave her straw cup from Nuby (3rd picture).  She was out of the bottle by 18 mos.

THis time around I hope to make the transition shorter by giving ds the straw cup right away.

As for the bib, I was lucky with dd as she didn't try to take it off but ds is another story.  I just stop putting a bib on him.  Not much help here, eh?

milk - we did a ceremonial throwing the bottles away and then there wasn't any choice.  we showed her them going into the bin and then showed her a new cup for her milk (in her favourite colour).  she didn't drink anything from it the first day but then took a bit and a bit more and within 3 days was drinking as much as from a bottle

bib - I decided it wasn't worth the fight (I try to pick my battles) but then was clear that she had to stay in her dirty top which she then hated and so within a week wanted the bib back.

Dd is 3 and still wears a smock-style apron.  We switched from bibs to the apron at about 16mos.  Ds likes to pull his bibs off, so I prefer tie-style ones for him.  He can't untie them, and he can't pull them over his head.

Ella likes to rip her bib off when she is finished eating. I don't mind as long as she puts it on the table, sometimes it gets thrown on the floor  ::). She used to rip it off during meals to which I would respond by moving her plate away. I told her she must be full if she was taking off her bib. She made the connection that the bib needs to stay on while she is eating. Sometimes now she will take off the bib prematurely and remember that she wants to eat more and will then try to put it back on herself, which is pretty funny.  :D
