DS is nearly 15Months, he used to sleep brilliantly at night (apart from the odd night).

Now, for the past 5 weeks, he is either waking up intermittently during the night screaming in a rage and jumping up and down in the cot or crying out in his sleep.

In the past month he has;

Gastroenteritis – Start of Nov
Started walking – Start of Nov
Got his 7th tooth – last week.
Getting his 8th tooth – now……

During the day, when I look after him he goes to sleep on his own, usually in his cot with no problems (unless he is overtired).

At night he goes to bed, again with relative ease, but can wake up again crying anytime from 10pm onwards.

Last night he was in bed for 7.30pm and woke up crying again at 12.30am, in a rage and jumping up and down in the cot. DH got annoyed at him and ended up bringing him in with us (argh!!)  We both have to get up at 6am for work every morning so we really need sleep. Usually he will go back to sleep straightaway but sometimes takes an hour.

He is only sleeping through about 1 in every 4th night at the moment, even those nights he is crying in his sleep before settling again.

I give him pain relief when he needs it i.e. teething, but I don’t want to be giving him medication when there is nothing visibly wrong with him.

I am a bit stumped as to what wrong, and I REALLY don’t want to make his nights visits to our nightly bed habit.  I have even put an item of my clothing in his bed to alleviate any SA that may be lurking.

He has been on a consistent 1 nap since he was 12 months, before that he went between 1 or 2 naps for a month.

I'm betting teething is the issue, right age, right "symptoms" ie going to bed relatively easily (not normal with SA) but waking up or crying in sleep.

If he is getting his 8th tooth, I kind of betting that there are molars also moving around under the skin... & for us the time before the molars (& now eye teeth) was worse than the actual breaking through... also we got molars at the same time/ before last 2 front teeth.

I have to say I swear by Hylands teething tablets at bed time... they seem to make sleep time during teething so much better than giving pain meds

Hi kate-how long do the Hylands work (in your experience).  Cole wakes so often I doubt my judgement as to whether he's in pain or just not wanting to return to sleep.  do you find if you give hylands then you're good for the night?  I tried Motrin last night and he still woke, mind you it was 6 hours after giving Motrin...so it may have been running out....

thanks ;D

What is he like during the day,is he happy? How long does he sleep for his nap during the day? Does he wake happy from that?

Hmmm if he is having 1hr nap he might be overtired by the end of the day and that often causes night waking. Do you find he is better on the weekend when you are home?

Natasha

I would be lying if I said he was better at the weekend, when I have him all the time.  Can't remember to be honest, but I am sure I was up over the weekend quite a few times.  I have already missed to important 'me' appointments this week, becasue I have clean forgotten about them.

My thoughts are overtired or teething Lauren. I know it is hard for you guys since you work but what about if you try WI/WO when he wakes? Is he cutting his molars as they caused DD to have a few night wakings as well?

Traci at the moment the Hylands are working all night -I think they do say 4 hours on the bottle but the 3 nights he has had them he has slept through, but the night we didn't give them he woke up upset twice... maybe a coincidence, but I know he is teething as I can see 2 points from eyeteeth & red patches + he is dribbling & biting on things.

I am ruling out overtired because there have been a few time when were out out and about at the weekend and on the way home from dads last night where he has had a nap in the car at 5pm ish + 1.5 - 2hr sleep both days and still gone to sleep at just past his usual time.

He woke at 0030 last night and resettled, then at 0530 ish crying in a rage, but still trying to settle.

I rubbed teething liquid in and she wanted to snuggle in, but would unfortunately not let me put him back in the cot.

Honestly sounds like a teething pain issue to me... those sort of things are always worse at night.
