Starting solids - what should I watch out for?
« on: August 16, 2006, 09:08:03 am »
Hello there

My DD is 5months old and we have started her on solids.

7am - 180ml bottle

8:45 - 10am - sleep

11am - 180ml bottle and 2 tspn baby rice

12:30 - 1:15pm sleep (sometimes more if lucky)

3pm  - 180ml bottle

6pm - 180ml bottle and 2 tspn baby rice

6:45 - bed

I have started her on baby rice cereal which she seems to enjoy, and introduced pear the other day.  How do you know when to start giving more tspn's? Do you just go by if they will keep on eating as I am sure she would eat more cereal?  With regards to having a reaction to foods, how do you know this? Does they come out in a rash or do they suffer with constipation?  My DD was sleeping through, but the last couple of nights has started waking 2 or 3 times, could this be due to the food?

Would appreciate any advice?  Thanks!!

When starting solids just start with a few teaspoons at this stage it is just to get them use to having food. You can increase amount if you like as long as it doesn't interferre with her milk intake.
Genreally when babies have reactions to food it can be either in the form of: a rash,constipation/runny poos, vomitting after eating. Rice cereal can often cause contipation and be unsettling to some babies so try and not give this for a few day and see if that helps with the night waking.
