10 wk old waking every 30-45 min
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:08:13 am »
I just implemented my DS EASY plan 4 days ago.  Before, I was feeding him every 3 hours, but he was only taking 45 min naps, so it was hard to keep the full EASY day.  Now that he's taking 1.5 hr naps, I started the plan as of 7.

Awake at 7

E   7-7:20
A   7:20-8:30 (wind down starts at around 8:20 and he goes right to sleep)
S   8:30-10:00 (I have to wake him up)

E   10-10:20
A   10:20-11:30  (wind down starts at around 8:20 and he goes right to sleep)
S   11:30-1:00  (I have to wake him)

E   1:00-1:20
A   1:20-2:30  (wind down starts at around 8:20 and he goes right to sleep)
S   2:30-4:00  (I have to wake him)

E   4:00-4:20
A   4:20-5:30
S   5:30-6:15

A time from 6:16- 7:00 (bath and wind down for the night)

E at 7 and then is asleep by 7:30

DF at 10:00

This is textbook everyday.  He is like clockwork.

He sleeps until 1:00 and then is awake every 30-45 min for the rest of the night.  Last night I even tried putting him in his swing to get some sleep and it didn't work.    I try shhh/pat but it puts him back asleep and then he's up again 30-45 min later.  He stops if I pick him up, or he'll sleep on me. I'm going mad.

I think he does have (had) silent reflux.  He started at 3 weeks, but has gotten a lot better.  He is calm during his A time now, and is taking 1.5 hr naps, it's just the night waking that has gotten out of control.  At times, he is really gassy, even though I have eliminated everything good from my diet.  No diary, soy, beans, nuts, caffeine, citrus, fatty foods, onions, garlic, cucumber, broccoli...etc.  His bed is on a 30 degree slant, and we hold him upright for 30 min post feeds.  This used to work and he would only wake every 3 hours at night, now it's every 30-45 min and I'm exhausted.

so many hugs...I really think this is discomfort related really. babies just dont wake that frequently for no reason KWIM?
Have you considered taking him to see a Dr or ped to discuss medication? Or an alternative if is try something like probiotics to help his gut if you think the digestion is more of an issue than reflux pain.

For us reflux started ~6 weeks but it really peaked around 3-4 months and then eased a bit after 6-7 (baring in mind Z was on a good dose of medication too then so that may have been something to do with it too ;) ) So I am wondering if the reflux is getting a bit worse ???

For now, is there a place he will sleep longer? Even if it is an option that may not be ideal long term, just to get through. Some LOs will sleep in a swing or a safe co-sleeping arrangement as this rough patch passes. For me it was day time naps and nights were ok in the cot so I did a lot of him sleeping on me, in the capsule, a baby seat and on his tummy close by me. If you felt comfortable trying it, you can try sleeping him on his left side. This helped us a lot too. However I have to note that SIDs reccommendations are to always place LO on their backs for sleep where possible. :-*

He is on a probiotic and I am as well.  I tried letting him sleep in the swing for a couple of nights, but that didn't work either.  With the reflux, the swing helped, but I think his problem is gas.  I worked his legs and laid him on his stomach and he passed gas several times.  Needless to say I was up for most of the night last night doing that.

I tried making a mixture of fennel and peppermint (my own Gripe water) but it didn't seem to help.

I don't want to even think that the reflux might be getting worse.

Yes, he's exclusively BF and he's 10 weeks.  I've tried every feeding position out there!  He burps well during the day, just not at night.

What's your supply like? Is he draining the breast fully before moving to the other? DS had awful gas when he wasn't getting enough hindmilk and block feeding helped, but don't do it unless you've an oversupply.

Since this appears to be a feeding issue, I'm going to link this thread to this one on breast feeding:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=241634.0

Please offer any thoughts/suggestions there.
