Putting Up a Huge Fight before Nap Time
« on: February 19, 2006, 19:19:49 pm »
Hi,

The only way I can get my DS down for a nap is to swaddle him, lay him on his side, and totally imobilize his arms and legs while patting/shushing. He hollers for about a minute and then falls right asleep. Is this normal? How can I teach him to fall asleep on his own without all the fighting? He's 3 months old.

Wow!  I'm sure you'll get some other answers, but at my house, that would be the greatest success!  Fighting the nap for only 1 minute is awesome!  We usually have a MUCH longer getting to nap time...somewhere between 5-20 minutes.  :(

I'll be anxious to hear what everyone else thinks!

If it makes you feel any better, BEDTIME can take up to 45 minutes  :-[!

Hi-are you swaddling him tightly?  My DS needed a VERY tight swaddle.  I think some babies just need to feel that security.  I agree that if you're getting him down in 1 minute for naps that he and you are doing very well.  Be sure to do a consistent windown as well.  This will indicate to him that it's time for sleep and he may go down better.  As for your nights...how long is he napping during the day, perhaps he's overtired and that's why it takes so long?

He definitely does better with a very tight swaddle... I think I'm not going to keep him up so long in between naps, he's probably overtired. Thanks!

A one minute fight before a nap is really good. We have a much longer fight on our hands. Pat/ shhh, a good swaddle and paying very close attention to tired cues should make things even better. When he's four months old, you might one to switch to PU/PD depending on how your lo does. Good luck to you! :D

Maybe I should have been more specific in my first post. I have to literally throw my weight on top of him so he can't budge an inch. It's like  a wrestling match... >:( I hold him down and pat/shush and he hollers for a minute and then he konks out...

Someone somewhere recommended a double swaddle. It worked! No crying...just patting! Thank goodness.

Thanks to the ton of advice from all you moms....we no longer are fighting at nap time! I'm also happy to report that he's been sleeping through the night now four nights in a row! Woo-hoo! We're so well rested! I can't begin to thank you all enough...
