feel like giving up...please advise
« on: March 06, 2006, 14:28:13 pm »
My son is 3mo old and 2 weeks. We have been trying 3 hour EASY for a week now. His typical full feeding (after 3 hours) is 3 oz sometimes 4. He is sleeping 7 hour stretches (but the one day that he napped "Correctly" he did 9 hours)

He goes down easily for naps....hardly ever fusses. However, he is waking after 50 - 60 minutes....I try the shh pat but he's just awake.
I get him up and wait for the 3 hour mark to feed him..then..I put him to bed an hour and half after he had gotten up (even though he got up at the incorrect time). I keep hoping that things will fall into place....but they arent.

Am I doing all I can at this point?
Should I try to keep him awake longer....like an hour and a half after his feeding (instead of when he first woke)?
IF I take him out in public he is cranky so I know he needs more sleep. I feel like a prisioner in my own home and it gets depressing. :-[

I don't really have much advice but I'm right there with you. My DS only has 30-45 minute naps. Its just a phase and they will grow out of it but you could try some of the wake to sleep techniques. I wouldn't keep him awake any longer than 1.5 hours if he is tired or he'll jsut be worse. In the meantime you just have to adapt EASY a little. Good luck!

have u tried wake to sleep technique? i have never done it myself although in your situation it may help.  also, what temperment is your lo??  if he is spirited the shh/pat together may be too stimulating for him.  have u tried just shhhhing or just patting on their own?  at that age my lo started noticing much more in the world and often i would do a long shhh noise while covering her eyes (more shielding) from anything stimulating i would keep trying different techniqies til u find something that clicks for the two of you.  how is his nighttime sleep? i wouldn't keep him up longer than that as u don't want him to be anymore overtired than he already is.

When my lo wakes up early from a nap and I can't get him back to sleep I take him out of the crib and sit quietly with him for a few minutes. (Either rocking or reading to him) Then he usually shows the sleep cues 15-20 min. after he wakes up early. After they appear I go into the soothing routine to get him back to sleep. I've also started doing this today and it's worked so far...45 min. into his nap when I hear him beginning to stir I go in and give him his paci (which has fallen out by this point) then pat him on the back (I also have a sound machine on) It worked great the few times I've done it. Usually I stand there over him for about 15 min. until he drifts off to sleep. Something else, in my case, when Brandon started ending naps early I tried to extend his routine and it worked. I went from a 2.5/3 hour routine to a 3/3.5 hour one and it seemed to help with the naps. Also my lo is 10 weeks. You'll probably find by extending his routine he might eat more too.

thank you!
how many oz does your lo take in a typical feeding? elliot only takes 3 oz so I thought extending the routine would be rough on him

Elliot will probably start to take more once you extend the routine. My DS takes about 7oz at each of his 5 feedings. He weighs 13lb 7oz. He switched to a 4 hour routine very easily.

could u post your routine for us?  i do agree with the point that the previous poster said that u should definately start to slowly extend his routine as it will help him take more at feedings and may help him sleep better if his A time is longer - only speculation at this point - but could help u tweak a bit if u posted the routine!  :)
