How much breast milk is LO getting?
« on: October 04, 2012, 13:40:51 pm »
Maybe a silly question but how do I know how many ounces my LO is getting when she nurses? She is almost 7 months old, nurses 5 times a day, and seems to drain both breasts before she comes off happy and ready to play. I guess I could just pump in between nursing sessions to measure? Or is there some generally accepted amount that a mother produces at this point in her breast feeding - on average? I'm thinking of dropping the DF soon, but need to know how many ounces to add to her feeds for the rest of the day. Any thoughts are much appreciated!

It varies from one child/mom to the next, and the different feeds are different amounts at other times of day.  The breastmilk even varies in fat/calorie content at different times of day!  Usually she will make it up on her own at another feed, perhaps she will nurse a bit longer or want an extra cluster feed before bed.  If you just let her nurse till she is "done", your body and her appetite will adjust to each other within a couple of days.

What Ellen said! :)

Pumping really wouldn't give you a reliable indicator of how much milk you are producing as a baby is much more efficient than a pump and women with plentiful supplies have been known to get virtually nothing out with a pump.

Yup! I was one of those...had an amazing supply, but my body would only let down the milk for baby not a pump! I could hand express a bit, but that was a pain to bother with.
