Title: Washing bottles in dishwasher???
Post by: ENMS on January 04, 2012, 16:45:11 pm
Hi!

Silly question... but is it ok to wash the bottles in the dishwasher instead of by hand? I would then sanitize them in the microwave steriliser I have.  I saw today little baskets to hold the nipples and smaller pieces and thought - wow, wouldn't it be great? But I'm not sure it's as good as doing it by hand...

I've always done mine in the dishwasher and then sterilised as normal although now ds2 is older I just put them through the dishwasher but mine has a really hot wash. One thing to watch though is if you put it through with a load of dishes that have a tomato based sauce like spaghetti Bol or something , the bottles may get orange stains on them.

If I had a dishwasher I would have used it! I do remember reading somewhere that US dishwashers run hotter than UK dishwashers (not sure if that's Canada as well) so bottles washed in them are sterilised too, so just take out and put together! Maybe check the temp your washer runs at, make sure the filter is cleaned regularly and it should be fine!

Thanks! I actually realized that my dishwasher sanitizes, I think it's the same as sterilizing??  It's fantastic, I saved so much time last night!  :D

I do mine by hand still - I use Avent and have heard that the volume markings will come off in the dishwasher ;)

We use Avent bottles and their instructions say that you only need to sterilize before the first use.  After that, you can use hot water/soap.  We do use the dishwasher as it washes with hot water and it has a heat dry setting.  But, we'll use the soap/water cleaning, too.

I use the dishwasher (which I didn't have when DD was a baby) to wash DS's bottles! It has a Saniwash function so I just use that every day to clean the bottles. If I've been bad and left them sitting too long before hand I give them a good rinse with really hot water before putting them in or a quick swish of a brush to loosen any leftover stuff. Just to make myself feel a little better. ;)

Phew!  This post just put me back in the "good mama" category ;)
