Title: Abbi wont be able to have dairy even at 1 years *cry*
Post by: em_here on September 30, 2007, 10:42:10 am
My lo has MSPI, and is on Neocate milk and a strict soy and dairy free diet. Last month we tried to get her onto pepti junior milk, and her poo turned into jelly and slop  :-X sorry tmi.  When I told the dietician, she said that her dairy intolerance is therefore classed as "severe" if she could not tolerate the pepti junior as this is still extensively broken down proteins (whereas the neocate is completely elemental, ie: totally broken down.)

She then delivered the blow, that this is likely to be a more "long term" intolerance, and she was not happy to try dairy with her even at 1 yrs.  I could cry, what will we do if Jack is eating milky buttons, she cant have any, how do you explain this to a toddler, that yes her brother can, but she cannot, I forsee so many problems with this!  Jack LOVES cheese, so what if Abbi really wants to try it, and she cannot.

Oh I dont know why I am writing this just feel a bit down in the mouth about it all, I know it could be worse, it could be a life threatening nut allergy, but still feel a bit down in the dumps. It feels like I am constantly label checking etc.... and cause I am not a great cook, and dont have the time, it is mostly jars she has and am so limited to what ones are dairy free

sob sob sob

Big Hugs Sweetie, I'm sorry.  It will be ok, I'm not sure how but it will.  Perhaps there are dairy free milk buttons, if not now then maybe by the time she can have them.

Chin up buttercup.  :-*

I know exactly how you feel! :-*  I have three girls and Abby is my youngest.  She is MSPI and was also on Neocate.  Don't get down in the dumps!  There is light at the end of the tunnel!  When you did try the pepti junior was her only reaction the poos?  Abby's reactions were also GI realted and I think this was a plus b/c she never had an allergic reaction (ezcema etc).  Her GI also tested her for a milk and soy allergy and she was negative.

Just after her 1st birthday we decided to try goat's milk.  My Dh was changing jobs and we didn't want to have to fight at again with another insurance company to cover part of the cost of the Neocate.  I knew that cow's milk was def out so we thought that we would give the goat's milk a try.  We went very slowing.  One ounce in one of her bottles for 2wks to see if she had any reaction.  When she didn't have an reaction we just kept increasing it after a week.  She is now on full goat's milk and is doing very well!  So there is hope that she could get off of the Neocate! ;D

For things that she can eat...I have made Abby lots of different foods using some Annabele Karmel receipes from the 100 Best Baby Food Purees.  She loves these!!  If you want the reciepes pm me.   It is all about label reading but after some time you learn to know what they can't and can have.  Abby loves the mini Strawberry Fig Newtons.  Well I just found out that the reg size Strawberry Fig Newtons have milk in them but the minis don't. ::)  How annoying!!

Now if her sisters are eating something that she can't have then I make them eat it either when she is napping or they can eat it somewhere where she can't see them.  But usually I just give her something that she really likes and she doesn't care if they are eating something different.  I just got some milk free choco chips and I am going to make her some chocolate chip cookies.  I also make her sugar cookies with goat's milk butter.

My MIL always feels bad when we are eating something that she can't but Abby really could care less! ;D  She has a wide variety of things that she does eat and she is happy with that!

We have started giving her some hidden dairy to see how she reacts and so far no reactions.  So I am hopeful that this isn't a long term thing with her.

HUGS and hang in there! :-*

Thanks Andrea, they are some fab ideas, I am probably getting things out of perspective  ::) The purees sound great, just gotta get some enthusiasm to cook.  Didnt know you could give goats milk at one, certainly a thought. Her poo doesnt just go runny, she becomes really unsettled crying for hours, and comes out all spotty on her face (never used to but does now), and her reflux plays up really bad :-(  But thanks for the lovely post gives me hope lol

Jenny, thanks hun, I looked down the one in ASDA, most things had soy in which was a pain, do any supermarkets have a really good one?

Thanks Zoey, for your support as always  :-* :-*

hugs Emma, I know how you feel. I don't know if we will be able to introduce milk at 1 or not yet, but hopefully we will be able to slowly try to introduce soy. Tesco do quite a big free from range now, including chocolate buttons! but unfortunately most of the stuff has soy flour in it. Hopefully mine will be able to tolerate soy by then, as he can manage bits of bread without any side effects now. Its just a pain not being able to give him everything that we have. We went to a toddler group last week and all the kids were sat round eating biscuits, I felt so sorry for Lucas, but he didn't seem to notice ::)

www.dietaryneedsdirect.co.uk This site has quite a range of chocolate that is dairy and soy free. The only thing is that the charge for delivery is quite high if I remember correctly. We don't order chocolate from there as it says it may contain traces of nuts and we are nut free here. Hope this is of some help will keep looking in supermarkets though. I believe Marks and Spencer do one but not had a look for it yet.

I know just how you feel, it's heartbreaking isn't it? My DD is 1 this week and we just had her allergy tests back and they are negative so I am dying to try and introduce some dairy because she is starting daycare in January and all the kids get fed but she will have to take her own lunch and be the odd one out  :( I mainly worry about when they get a bisuit or something though, it will be awful if she can't have one. I also worry if she is still sensitive that there will be noone keeping a close eye on her and she will eat something she shouldn't, she has drank coffee with cream before and had a bad stomach for days  ::) I think it's a great idea to bake your own biscuits, I'm sure your other kids will love them too. Also I have a friend and her DD can't tolerate cows milk but is fine with goats milk and has been drinking it since 9 months.

Before I had DD I went to a wedding and there was an announcement that one little boy had sever allergies to milk, nuts etc, he was only about 2 but he seemed to know that he couldn't eat cake etc and was very happy eating a big fruit salad, bless him I was pregnant and so sad seeing the other kids running around and eating cake  :'(

we've just had our dietitian appointment, and can't try Lucas on dairy until 18 months  :-\  but we can try him on soy again, as she said it could just have been that his gut couldn't cope with it when he was younger. At least she agreed that he was reacting to the nutramigen  :) and gave us a necoate recipe book and it has rusks in it!!!!
