Can't remember what thread it was on but folks were discussion tasting their breast milk and making things with it (like ice cream) and I have never tasted breast milk so was curious!! I sit here with my breast pump in front of me, full of milk and even the curiosity can't make me do it ;)
So pray tell ladies?
PS It might also help me to find a formula that is similar!?!?
-
It's very sweet. I find it odd that some people thinks that by giving fruits first as a solid will get babies hooked on sweet food.
-
Sweet?? WHy am I surprised?! Ok almost tempted to taste it :-X
-
Mimi - I've always thought that too! :)
Very sweet - like the milk left in the bottom of a bowl of sugar cereal.
However mastitis can make milk taste saltier so today you might ironically be a bit saltier than usual!
-
With Riley, mine tasted like vanilla milkshake. Really nice and tasty.
Anytime I've expressed for Kate, it has tasted soapy...like I have lipase issues this time round.
-
Hmmmmmmm maybe I should try a few drops of acaloric aspartame free sweetner in the formula and see if I cna't Emily to take it then?! Thinking aloud here!
-
Noooo...even sugar would be better than those calorie free sweeteners! I'm amazed they can even sell those chemicals and pass them off as food.
Not that I think you should add sugar either btw!
-
Mine's sweet, but not too sweet. and a bit sticky too. Or is that just me?
-
One thing I love about this place is the neat stuff I learn. Having never tasted breast milk or formula, I know squat. ;)
-
I also wouldn't suggest you add anything. Adding sugar for example will encourage the growth of new bacteria and increase the likelihood of thrush/ candida. I think using the SNS as you suggested on your other thread is a simple solution.
-
thanks, very good points re: sweeting, I didnt think it through ::) FOund Hipp organic today so will try that too. I just want to be able to leave her with a bottle of formula if I need a few hrs to myself...or overnight. I really can't be bothered with expressing :-\
-
Very sweet here too! I love the way Josh smells, he's got this wonderful milky odour to him :P
-
:-X :-X :-X could never bring myself to taste it :-X :-X :-X
I know it is sweet because MIL has that fantastic MIL habit of telling me the same story over and over again about when she was bfing and obviously had enormous amounts of milk (but much more than you or me guys ::)) and when she used to take off her boob wraps in the morning, she used to squirt the board at the base of her bed. By the time she had fed DH (my DH btw ;)) it had completely crystalized and looked like sugar.
So there you go and now you all know her story too ;) ::) :-X
-
:o Sinčad!!!
Couldn't do it..the tasting, but I took a massive sniff and def smells sweet!!
-
Definitely sweet. And very yummy (according to my toddler).
My boys wouldn't take any formula at all untill we tried Hipp Organic Stage 2, which they took to just fine. It's the only formula I've tasted that didn't completely repulse me! Worth a try!

Katie....how are you my dear!!?
-
Wow, so glad she liked the hipp organic! ;D
-
seriously, Michelle, you've never tried it? I had to try it at the beginning, I was WAY too curious. DH thinks I'm completely nuts but if I'm feeding it to my kid, I thought I better figure what it tasted like too! And yes, it's very sweet and the hind milk is especially creamy. :-X :)
-
seriously, no! can't bring myself too even though I too am massively curious ;)
-
Katie....how are you my dear!!?
We're fine - thanks for asking :-* Having to do with digestive issues for the first time, can't believe Lisi never even needed to burp, Norah's the opposite. Took them all sledging today ;D
Mmmmmm Oreos... are you such a chicken? It's really quite good!
-
Taste it already ;D
-
GO ON!! It's really quite yummy if you can open your mind to it! No need to drink a whole cup of it... just a little taste!
The peer pressure is mounting...!!
xx
-
OMG I am feeling the pressure......
-
Michelle - In more than 3 years I have only tasted a couple of drips. I wasn't really a big pumper and didn't really see the need.
People - stop pushing the lass!!
(Or Michelle just pretend you did. We won't know ;))
-
LOL Emma!!!

-
Is that you dipping your tongue in? LOL!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
LMAO :D
-
Me too! :D
-
OK if I taste it I want a reward....
-
A chocolatey reward?
-
ooooh i'm liking the sound of that, even virtual choc will do!! But It's a huge deal for me sso I feel I need an incentive ;)
-
Well, there must be chocolate you like that you cant get in Italy....we could send you some! Would need evidence you'd done it though LOL!
Dont force yourself to do it though, you might end up freaking yourself out or bringing up your lunch or something :P

I'm still shaking my head at the notion of making breastmilk icecream..... :o
Now....are we waiting for a pic of her chugging it down, or tentatively dipping a finger. Big difference, there, folks....
-

-
She's allowed to dip finger I say.

SHE DID IT SHE DID IT SHE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o
Well done michelle, we know you could do it!!! ;D ;D ;D
Soapy? Have you been eating Dove LOL :P
-
thats exactly what it tasted like..dove :-X OMG i'm such a pushover
-
Pushover? Uuuuuh no, its taken us like 3 days to persuade you!! :-*
-
yuk i feel sick now
-
Lol Michelle :D :D Funny that it tastes soapy. Did somebody else say they thought they had lipase (or is it lipade) issues? Zander would never eat breastmilk which had been frozen and I figured it was because it made it taste soapy, something to do with the lippy thingys. Mine tastes like pure sugar! I'm so glad I read this anyway. I've been trying to get Nate to take a cup of formula in the afternoon as I'm going back to work 2 days a week in April but he's just not liking it. I'll try Hipp Organic.
Kelly x
-
Oh dear :-X
If its good enough for your baby its good enough for you lol!
Go eat some chocolate ;D
-
yuk i feel sick now
more sweets! more sweets!
I was thinking about the lipase issue - milk with excess lipase is often described of as soapy. Michelle - does you milk seem OK after it's been frozen?
-
Kelly, you tasted too?? So its just me who hadnt! I havent tried the Hipp again coz E mily threw up a few hrs later whixh she doesnt normally do...
-
am gobbling sweets :) whether fridge or frozen its quite frothy...
-
I've only tested it when I've squirted it on my wrist to test the temperature and then licked it off :P Enjoy your sweeties :D
-
LMAO I can't believe I just saw this now! You must archive this thread for your bubs later in life. ;D ;D ;D Good on you woman! You have my serious respect. :-*
-

-
Go girl!!!

-
ROFL Michelle! Did you wash your hands right before tasting?
Where are those Oreos when you need them :P :-*

-
Too funny!

-
LMAO Mark thinks I've lost the plot
Michelle - you're too funny, good on you though :) :-*
-
Awel, tell Mark it is clearly I who has lost the plot :P the sleep deprivation is taken to new levels ::) Or as stacy says....i need to find something to do! ;)
-
Has anyone noticed the little line at the very bottom of page one saying 'Google last visited this page...'
The whole WORLD could be reading this thread and learning so much ;) :)
-
Last night i pumped as usual and as i was putting it into one bottle and noticed it was warmer than usual. Without thinking i put my finger in to feel it and then licked my finger :P
to my surprise it was quite nice, just tasted like sugary milk
just wanted to share this Kate :D
-
I havent got a little google line that I can see?! Even so, rather funny, more people than we know are probably getting some entertainment out of this! ;D
-
However did I miss this thread? Never made ice cream or dipped Oreos in it, but had no qualms about using bottled leftovers on cold cereal if someone didn't finish a bottle of EBM. Nice and sweet and creamy. :) Hey, waste not want not, right ;D
-
The 'google woz here' thing can only be seen on the first page of the thread.
-
Oh yes I see it Emma! :D
Deb, not sure I could bring myself to eat cereal with bm on it?! :o :o :o
-
not sure about the cereal time but maybe in tea lol :D
-
:-X
-
To me, the EBM was like gold, and if there was leftovers, I was NOT gonna throw it out!!!!! Down the hatch or down the drain, so it was consumed! ;D
-
Bit late, but WELL DONE MICHELLE!! ;D ;D 8)
-
I know what you mean i was heart broken tipping 2oz away :'(
-
Oh dear I feel a little embarassed now :-[ google readers everywhere are gonna think same as Stacy!!
-
They are going to think you are fab and funny :-*
I don't think it has to mean someone actually read it. Maybe google searched for 'salty' for someone and we were on page 27 of 120 pages they got back.
-
ahhh i get it ;)
-
I still have never tasted! Sticky yes, hate it when I get it on me.
What is lipase issues???
Michelle, and all you hangers on, however do you find the time for this stuff???
-
Here's some stuff about lipase from kellymom...
"A few mothers find that their refrigerated or frozen milk begins to smell or taste soapy, sour, or even rancid soon after it's stored, even though all storage guidelines have been followed closely. Per Lawrence & Lawrence (p. 781), the speculation is that these mothers have an excess of the enzyme lipase in their milk, which begins to break down the milk fat soon after the milk is expressed. Most babies do not mind a mild change in taste, and the milk is not harmful, but the stronger the taste the more likely that baby will reject it.
Lipase is an enzyme that is normally present in human milk and has several known beneficial functions:
Lipases help keep milk fat well-mixed (emulsified) with the "whey" portion of the milk, and also keep the fat globules small so that they are easily digestible (Lawrence & Lawrence, p. 156).
Lipases also help to break down fats in the milk, so that fat soluble nutrients (vitamins A & D, for example) and free fatty acids (which help to protect baby from illness) are easily available to baby (Lawrence & Lawrence, p. 156).
The primary lipase in human milk, bile salt-stimulated lipase (BSSL), "has been found to be the major factor inactivating protozoans" (Lawrence & Lawrence, p. 203).
Per Lawrence & Lawrence (p. 158), the amount of BSSL in a particular mother's milk does not vary during a feed, and is not different at different times of day or different stages of lactation. There is evidence that there may be a decrease in lipase activity over time in mothers who are malnourished.
What can I do if my storage problem is due to excess lipase? Once the milk becomes sour or rancid smelling/tasting, there is no known way to salvage it. However, newly expressed milk can be stored by heating the milk to a scald to inactivate the lipase and stop the process of fat digestion. Scald the milk as soon after expression as possible."
And who are you calling a hanger on! The bloomin' cheek. ;)
-
very interesting emma thanks!
Rina...as i said this was a purely scientific experiment!
-
roflmao. thanks for info emma!
