Title: Signs baby is ready to wean dream feed?
Post by: kateg on May 22, 2008, 18:07:36 pm
Hello,

I've read all the information on here regarding when to wean from the dream feed, but it only appears to be based on age (6 -7 months).  Are there any signs I should look for to see if baby is ready to wean the dream feed?  Should I just start doing the feed earlier and earlier as per the posting (since I'm breastfeeding) and if he wakes earlier in the morning that means he isn't ready?  I was planning to introduce solids at 6 months and if all was going well start weaning the dream feed at 7 months.  Right now my lo is 5.5 months old and has 4 feeds per day plus the dream feed around 10 - 10:30.  He usually sleeps to 7 or so, right now I"m dealing with 5AM wakings from holiday's, but that should be sorted out soon.  Thanks for any information!

I am trying to remember back, but I think I dropped the df cold turkey with DS around 7 mo.  He seemed to be taking less & less, so I just skipped it one night, and with no ill effects.  I'd suggest trying it one night, what have you got to lose?  And if that doesn't work, your idea of moving it earlier and earlier is a good one too....I'd go 15 min increments or so every few days.
good luck & let us know!

Hi kateg, Me personally i think its a much kinder way to bring the df earlier (15mins every couple of nights) and then fade it out. But having saying that if the lo is not drinking much at the df then you could just decrease the amount of time at the breast, by a min every couple of nights. If you do it slowly and it doesn't work you will still have supply there to start again.
