I want to introduce peanut butter and honey to dd, but the nurse I talked to today said not to until 2years old! she said there is a danger of choking because of the stickiness. Does that sound ridiculous to anyone else? We did BLW, and even though dd only has 4 teeth, she eats everything from apple slices to whole grapes to turkey bacon and carrot sticks. We've never had a choking episode ever. I feel like she'd be able to handle a little bit of stickiness. Or am I being naive?

I've never heard that, we did BLW and basically I though everything was green lighted apart from the usual choking hazards like whole nuts etc. I thought the reason it is advised to stay away from peanuts is because of possible nut allergies and honey because of botulism. Leorah has had honey since 12 months but no peanut butter but that is because I don't like it myself so we don't have any, I may try her with it though, loads of US mums give it to their LOs. My HV didn't know anything about BLW, I think they get told the "rules" and stick by them ::) I reckon BLW will be the recommended way to wean in the future don't you? I think babies that are used to purees can find sticky stuff and bread etc gaggable but I can't see a baby that eats apple slices having a problem.

I have never heard that you can't give LO's peanut butter and honey because of choking!! What I have heard is the same as Skatty!!:) I will be giving my DS peanut butter and honey when he turns 1!!

Choking because of the stickiness?! That's a new one on me.
Bread gets stickier than honey for a start.
Honey's risk is botulism and that is considered safe from 12 months.
I know they are varying views about peanut butter but I don't think stickiness is one of the concerns.

I believe with peanut butter, there is a choking risk...did you ever eat a glob of it and get that choking feeling? It is recommended to only spread it very thinly while your lo is young. I do see how a child could have problems with it.

I gave my DD PB around 18 months, but then waited again until she turned 2. I now give her different nut butters instead, like almond butter. A friend of mine who is a naturapath said that actually PB is quite hard to digest. Now and again she takes a bite of mine, but I don't want to give her too much until she's had time to let her digestive system grow a bit. She's def not allergic to it though.

I haven't given PB yet. Honey since 12 months though...

Honey from about 2 years, peanut butter - never have and probably never will ;)

Thats a new one on me, plus if peanut butter goes on toast it melts down anyway!
Honey I gave from 1 year as per guidelines, peanut butter probably around the same time as we have no allergies in the family. Just as well, cos Ryan loves it ;D
-
We started at about 12mths too... i really don't beleive they can choke on it either!
-
DD had peanut butter from about 12 months and ds had it from about 9 months and both love it. If you put it on toast you dont get much stickiness at all - if its on bread it can stick to the roof of their mouth but thats easy to dislodge with a finger. Both have had honey in baking from 12 months but I dont think they've had it on toast/bread - dont know why really!!

huh. i'd always heard honey from 12 months. with PB, I'd never heard of an issue with stickiness - it was always an issue of whether or not allergies would develop. i did wait until dd was 3YO & she had no problems. ds complained of being itchy, so we're holding off for a little longer to see if he can grow out of it & avoid it.

We've been doing all natural almond and peanut butter (almond is quite rich, but better nutrients for you) it is all natural, just smashed up and ground nuts done at the health food store. No added sugar, additives or salt. It is fab. It has a lot runnier consistency than commercial store bought brands that are full of "stuff." DS has had it since 10 months and loves it, we have no history of food allergies in either families. I gave honey at 1 yr, he is not a huge fan, not really a sweet tooth guy more of a savoury (like me!) and would eat hummus over honey any day. All natural Peanut or Almond butter is a great source of protein. He often eats peanut butter and banana whole wheat or flax seed tortilla wraps I make. They are so easy to make and portable too.

Both mine had PB and honey from about 12 months.
Edited to add that now that I think about it they were probably closer to 9 months old for the PB
-
I believe we gave both to DS after 12 months.

Both after 2 yr for J, but because of allergies/botulism, not choking. Isaac has had "cooked" honey from about 12 mo, but we're holding off PB for him for a while longer. I've had all sorts of allergies & don't want to take the chance on him yet. He's had tree nuts in stuff, though.

Thanks for all your replies! I gave PB for the first time today--no choking!
Dd loved it!
It makes sense to me not to give a huge glob of it...that would make anyone sick! But I think I'll stick to common sense and dd will be fine.
Haven't tried the honey yet. maybe that will come next! Anyone here give Agave nectar?
