Hi,
I have a 2,5 YO and a newborn, which is proving to be a big challenge :o
However, Im curious to know how much other 2,5 YOs sleep in 24 hrs? Valentino doesn't nap anymore, his sleeping was always very very difficult and with hard work and persistence he has now slept independently in big boys bed since the start of the year, so going to sleep in the evening is always easy. Napping was always more of a problem, because of my inconsistency (hadn't discovered BW yet, wish I had!!) or maybe because of his fiery temper! Since the start of the summer, napping was on and off, sometimes 1 a week, sometimes full week and now can't get him to nap anymore apart from in the car, so have stopped in altogether about 1-2 months ago.
However, his nights haven't gotten any longer. He is generally in bed by 7.30pm and doesn't take long to fall asleep. But he is up between 5.30-6.30am, and 6.30am is a luxury and doesn't happen often. I can see that he's tired by the time I take him to nursery (8am) when he's been up since 5.30am. 10 hours doesn't seem anough.
What do you think? Any advice how we can get the mornings a little bit longer?

My 2.5yo generally sleeps about 10.5h at night, and a 1.5h nap. About 1-2 times a week he won't nap but then we put him to bed about 45min-1h early.
Could you put your DS to bed a bit earlier hoping he gets a bit more sleep?

Hi Val's mum!
Would he still nap if he was tired? Could you try putting him down for a nap and then putting him to bed a bit later in the hope he wakes later?
My DS is just over 2.5 and he sleeps on av 10 hours at night and 2-3 hrs nap. We do this because it suits me to have him wake a bit later in the mornings rather than doing no nap and having an earlier BT and earlier wake up. I suppose it's what suits the individual - but he hasn't resisted the nap - yet! :P
We do have a lot of activity outside for at least 2 hours in the am - so I think this helps with the nap!!!

DD is only taking a nap 1 or 2 days a week now. We still put her in the crib everyday for an hour quiet play. And if she sleeps great, if not she is in bed by 7:00 and up at 7:30. So 12.5 total hours with or without a nap.
-
At 2.5 yo, dd's total sleep was 12-12.5 hrs. It was also the time she was giving up her nap.

Ella is 26 months, so a little shy of 2.5 but she naps 1.5 - 2 hours daily and usually sleeps 11 - 11.5 hours, so on average gets 13 hours daily. Some days a little less other days a bit more. Nap is solid, it's night sleep that varies a bit day to day.
-
Mine isn't quite 2.5, but she has a 1 to 1.5 hour nap and sleeps about 11 hours at night. She has the odd day where she refuses the nap, but she has to stay in her crib for quiet time then and we put her to bed a little earlier.

DS1 (2.75yr old) is still having a 1 - 2 hour nap most days. The ones he doesn't, he's crabby by bedtime. He's usually in bed by 7-7:30pm and awake around 7-7:30am.
I would try sneaking his bedtime forward by 15 mintues for a week and see if it makes a difference. If it does, then sneak it forward another 15 minutes. He may end up needing an earlier bedtime.
Could also try reintroducing the nap or even some quiet time in his bed.
HTH :)

How do you reintroduce nap time. DD stays in her crib everyday. Somedays she sleeps, but most days she does not. Is there something I could do to help her sleep during the day?

DS has stopped taking naps altogether since the end of September. I know he still needs the sleep so on days when he wouldn't nap I'd put him to bed at 7 since his normal wake up time is 7am. That way he was getting 12 hours at night. I remember reading somewhere that 12-13 hours is the usual amount of sleep needed at this age. Now that he's never napping we just always stick to the 7pm bedtime. I've really hated giving up my ME time in the afternoons, but there's just been no way around it. :-\ He does do ok though as long as he's getting those 12 hours. If he goes to bed late, and wakes up at normal time he's a bear all day the next day!

Technically you are doing 'nap' time.
I don't know of any legal means to make a child to sleep during the day if they aren't doing it themselves. ;) ;)
(Please don't anyone take offence to the next couple of sentences. It sounds kinda 'blaming', but I don't know how else to explain it.)
I was just meaning that if you had a child who wasn't offered winding down time prior and time in their beds etc to even have a chance to sleep, that if you started doing that again it would be "reintroducing" the nap.

Oh, too bad. I thought you had some miricale way to start naps again. Some days DD really needs one and will not go to sleep. Although I do feel that she recharges a bit even while awake in the crib. And mommy still loves the hour of ME time!!!!

Wouldn't that be wonderful?!!

my 3 yr old stopped naps at 2.5 and also went to bed about 730, though for about 12 hrs straight. but 2 months ago or more we started sleep training our one year old (in other words i stopped breastfeeding him every 2 hrs and instead pat his back etc) and he sleeps less soundly bc of the noise of it all and then his baby brother wakes him up extremely early, around 5 or 530, so he started becoming over tired too. so we started putting him to bed earlier and earlier. i try to put him to bed 12 hours after he woke up so that he can aim for 12 hours of sleep again, but until his brother learns to sleep at night it is hard. however, i also do recommend putting your LO to bed earlier than 730 if he has not napped and if he has not slept enough the previous night. i moved my LO's bed time from 730 to 7. then to 630. and now he is going to bed at 6 bc he's waking at 5 *and that still isn't enough sleep! may you all get some rest!

Ainslee just turned 2 in Oct and she sleeps 12 hours at night and 1.5-2 hours nap in the day... She has always needed more sleep than the usual toddler.. sometimes she will skip a nap if we are out or driving somewhere, but is still a happy toddler and we move bedtime up earler.. Ithink it just depends on the toddler

Mine sleeps about 10-10.5 hrs at night and 2-3 hrs during the day. Once in a while he doesn't take a nap. I put him in his bed, but he doesn't go to sleep. I leave him for about an hour.
