Hey all I'm back with a different topic....
My little Max whose 16 months is a pretty good eater all day loves most fruits/veg and meats...
But I struggle with Brekkie ideas, he has weetbix on the odd occassion, doesnt like porridge, he likes the heinz apple cinnamon porridge in the baby tins.
I make him toast and toasted muffins, and on weekends when we have pancakes he loves them.
But with the toast he doesnt really EAT it, he sucks it ans might eat a little bit but not enough for me to think he's getting enough nutrition for brekkie! I would prefer to feed him something then make toast for him to nibble on while i'm making the older LO's lunches for school.....
Any ideas on what i can try and make for him.
Bek

Hi-
our usuals are:
oatmeal with raisins
scrambled egg/fried egg/cheese omelet
pancakes
french toast
waffles
yogurt with fruit
cheerios/Kix/shredded wheat
vegetarian breakfast sausages
fruit fruit and more fruit
homemade muffins
-
Same here Cathie...those are all the things we have. Dd has never accepted eggs before, and just this week I was making myself a scrambled egg and she loved it! yay!
Blueberry pancakes are a biggie, she loves them.
Yogurt with fruit and some dry cereal is a fave too. Today she had a piece of cinnamon raisin toast, some strawberries and a whole bunch of dry cheerios.
I thank God for cold cereals some days....rice crispies, special k, she is so happy having cereal, and that and some fruit is a good start I think!
Have you tried oatmeal...you say he doesn't care for porridge, is that oatmeal?? DD hated the baby oatmeal, but now she has Earth's Best (organic) maple/brown sugar oatmeal, and it is by far her favorite brekkie.
Oh yeah and homemade banana muffins...I sneak in some flax...very healthy...even dh likes them! Let me know if you want me to pm you the recipe...very very easy!!
-
Max is a huge fruit fan, he loves it and can eat almost 2 small containers cut up everyday. his new found fave is sultanas at the moment!
This morning he wouldnt eat anything other then 1 strawberry diced up small and a few sultanas!
With the scrambled eggs, i'm guessing they are ok for a 16 month old, we havent tried any eggy foods with Max yet!
ooooh yummy i love cinnamon raison toast too, i will definately be trying that one!
I think we get Cheerios here (are you in australia) does it have lots of sugar in it?
I'm not sure if oatmeal is porridge or not, maybe they are different things!
Thanks Amelia the recipe for you banana muffins would be great, sound yummy!
Thanks for both replies!
-
I'm in the US....cheerios are very low in sugar...just one gram per serving...!!! That's funny about oatmeal/porridge......when you sat porridge do you mean baby cereal, (like a powder) that you mix with water/formula to make a pasty-like food? What I mean when I say oatmeal is that it comes in a packet and looks just like oats...add boiling water and there you go! Comes in flavors too...I foumnd the earth's Best brand is by far the lowest sugar....I could not believe how high in sugar most oatmeals are!!
I didn't offer eggs to dd until she was almost 2, but yet she had things with eggs "in" them long before that. I'd ask your doc, because if it is ok, it would open up alot of brekkie options...like french toast!! Does he like yogurt??
I'll pm you the banana recipe....I'm sure you have all the ingredients in your house, they are simple!! I'll get that to you tomorrow!
-
The tin porridge he likes is a heinz baby one and its apple cinnamon porridge. the one he doesnt like is what i buy for my DD and that is in a satchet that we add milk to, so i guess your oatmeal is porridge to us!
I too have always been hesitant with the eggy stuff! he hasnt even tried the egg custard in the heinz range ( do you get heinz?) But none of my other LO's have any allergies to food or eggs so he will probably be ok!
he does like yoghurt, any type. I usually cut strawberries up really small and mix it all together for him. But te weather is getting cold here and was just thinking of nice warm brekkie ideas!
Thanks i'll try and make the muffins when my husband is nightshift, gives me something to do!
-
Just a thought for anyone making oatmeal-
It's always so hot when I'm done making it and adding enough milk to cool it makes it too liquidy, so lately I've been adding unsweetened applesauce and it works great. Also, if I use a can of fruit for something I save the liquid from the can in the refridgerator and put that in his oatmeal too. You could also pour it into ice cube trays and freeze it so you can cool the oatmeal even faster!
-
Great idea amanda, i find that its way to hot aswell, i even add extra milk for my 5 year old otherwise it would never cool in time for her to eat before school. I'll try your idea out for her!:)
-
Egg in any shape or form
Homemade healthy muffins (can freeze them, too)
Sandwich
Yoghurt
-
I love the ideas on here...
Anne- yes, I was shocked by how much sugar is in regular instant oatmeal.
I actually did our own on the stovetop today:
1 cup steel cup oats, handful of raisins, 1.5 cups water/wholemilk, a dash of cinnamon/cardamon,and maple syrup or honey- just a tad! Heat it up till rolling boil then simmer on low for 6 mins. I add cold milk to mine too!
YUM.
never had trouble with eggs at that age, we had minor tomato/strawberry allergies which have resolved. Phew!
Heinz products are in the specialty aisle in American supermarkets. Usually there is a section for European/British goods in the ethnic foods area.
-
I found cheerios in our local supermarket today, so he can try them as a dry snack today when we go to toy library for a play!
I found a few new ranges in heinz for toddler food today when i did my shopping, i was very excited. My husband looked at me like i was strange...but HEY these are the things that excite us mums! :)
He had a full bottle this morning when he first woke so am going to wait half an hour and try something from the new stuff i bought yesterday. I also got some raison toast, i cant wait for some of that myself!
(speechie) your oatmeal looks yummo, he might like homemade better, he seems to eat better with homemade stuff!
-
Cathie I am TOTALLY gonna try to make my own oatmeal!!! That would be so fun to play around with, too....add a bit of honey (if child is old enough), maybe some vanilla, maybe some brown sugar, maybe some wheat germ.....yay!! I HATE oatmeal, so I'll have to have dh be my tester!!!
When oatmeal is too hot, I throw an ice cube in there and stir it up til it's melted...doesn't water it down too much. Also, most of the time when I hear dd wake I go downstairs and heat the water to boiling, throw in the packet and stir it, then go up and get her. Those extra minutes help it cool down some, too. :)
Sp psyched Max is gonna try cheerios!! That's a staple here in the US! How did he like them?
-
Gonna post the muffins here...hope that's ok??? Think all of you would like them!!
Heat oven to 350
1 egg
3 tbs. canola oil ( I use vegetable oil, they came out fine...canola is healthier I think?)
1.5 tsp vanilla
3 very ripe bananas (4 if they are small)
1 cup sugar (you can use less if you want)
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups whole wheat flour (we use King Arthur organic)
1 tsp cinnamon ( I throw in a dash more...I love cinnamon)
*optional-1 tsp pulverized wheat germ...I put it in a plastic baggie and beat it to a powder)
Heat oven to 350
Beat egg. Add oil and vanilla. Add bananas and beat well. Add sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon. Mix well.
Add flour a bit at a time and mix well.
Add mix to lined cupcake pan and bake for 20 minutes. Test for doneness with toothpick inserted into center of muffin...if it isn't all gummy with batter, you're all set!
This makes 12 or so good sized muffins...I fill cups about 2/3 full. After they cool completely, you can wrap some up in saran wrap and toss them into the freezer! They defrost in no time...I will take one out at night and leave it right on the counter....in the morning I give dd a muffin and some yogurt...a healthy breakfast! when she was Max's age I'd cut it into chunks for her. Now I slice it in half and put a bit of butter on it!! Older kids love these even more if you added some mini chocolate chips!!
Also if you want to try the mini-muffins I'd try to bake for 15 minutes.
These are really so good....and easy to convert the entire thing into organic if you wanted!!
-
Max loved the cheerios dry as he was playing today, kept coming back for more. My older DS had them with milk for brekkie amd loved it. Might try them with milk for max tomorrow morning, as this morning he ate nearly nothing again!
wow banana muffins sound so yummy, gonna pop out to the supermarket and grab a few things i dont have and give them a try! Thanks Amelia!
i'll let you know how i go!
:)

rebecca, I'm in Australia too, I hadn't tried the Cherios, are they high in sugar? I wonder if they are the same as the US version.
we have here,
weetbix with raw muesli sprinkled on top (adds flavour and sweetness without adding sugar ), not for Leobin yet, he likes to eat himself. I also add processed flaxseed which is great for omega 3.
weetbix crunch are really good for variation
homemade porridge, or in the past I've bought the Uncle Toby's sachets, and then made one up for 2 people, adding quick cooking oats and a little more water to it. I use half water, half low fat milk. If i do homemade porridge I add dried apricots, or dried dates. Dates are the best!
raisin toast
french toast with fruit on the side
scrambled eggs
The yummiest thing we have now is bircher muesli which is delicious, requires no 'cooking'. I love the ingredients the best!
I like that it's all whole ingredients, no cooking required, no processing.
Bircher muesli
the night before get 2 cups rolled oats, add 1 1/4 cups apple juice and cover with a tea towel and leave overnight.
In the morning add fruit ingredients and 3 tablespoons natural yoghurt, but I do the fruit differently each time.
What's yum - pear or apple grated in, mashed banana is yum, 1 cup of frozen raspberries, last time I added tinned apricots instead because I needed to use them up and they were great, not as tart as the raspberries, but both just as good.
Most days we have weetbix, with about 2 days with something different.
-
I'm thinking the cheerios here are the same as the US the box says its all made out of wholegrains...
we tried thr raison toast this morning, he ate a little bit of his own but ended up eating more of mine, which was a bonus!
I think i'll be brave and try the scrambled eggs tomorrow morning!
Bircher Muesli sounds good and easy,
when adding the apple juice do you add the kids apple juice that you buy in the baby isle or normal apple juice?
Do any of you just cut up small peices of apple for you Lo's to eat, i have always been to scared Max will choke! he has had them steamed soft.
-
I add any juice, I had some juice boxes in the fridge leftover from a party, some of them orange juice and they all worked fine. The ones I had weren't enough, so I added water to make it up.
I give Leobin slices of apple skin on or off and he eats them fine. I think slices are better than chunks for Leobin, overall he holds them well and bites off a piece the size he wants. He eats mostly finger foods and has not had a problem with choking etc. I think being used to feeding himself makes it easier, he can control the food, is good at spitting out too much etc. When we started solids he had to be force-fed antiobiotics for a bad ear infection and so that stalled any attempts at purees! Even now he doesn't like to be spoon fed so much. ::)
-
good to hear he handles apples well, have you ever peeled one and just let him have it full? I might try with small slices first?
-
no not full yet.
for some reason at the moment he's taken to eating pear or apple, chewing it a bit then pushing it out of his mouth! don't you wish they could tell you what's going on?! lol
-
it would be nice if they could tell us what they like or dislike!
I might actually try and grate it up first before....tiny steps! :)
i'm thinking with his foods to sticking to what he likes without trying NEW things, everytime i do he doesnt like it! I spent a fortune yesterday on new toddler foods in the baby isle and he hasnt liked anything so far.
He does prefer our homecooked meals which we have all the time but on the odd occassion we have takeout and I give him a toddler tin! He does like it but not all the time!
I'm thinking breakfast isnt his strong meal time! I should just be happy with the small amount he eats, but being the most important meal of the day i wish he would eat more!
-
Hiya Bek - Max is only 2 days younger than Artemis and she eats apple no worries, in fact she stopped eating steamed apple and apple cubes/slices and now wants a huge 1/4 chunk of apple in her hands to chomp on!! She has never choked. I would kill for Raisin Toast - I lived on it when living in Oz!!
For breakie we have either porridge (homemade, 2 tablespoons Quaker rolled oats which I leave covered with boiling water while I go and dress LO, then heat it up in a saucepan with full fat milk - they absorb all the water and more of the milk), or Weetabix, just broken up with warm full fat milk. I am scared to add fruit to her breakfast food, as she eats it fine without and I don't want her to crave the sweet flavour over the milky flavour iykwim? Maybe I think about it too much ?? I just give her the fruit on the side (usually either a dried apricot cut in 4 or a dried prune cut in 4).
I also find she prefers home cooked meals rather than pre packaged stuff. Nice to know someone likes my cooking!! LOL
We are also off eggs til she has her allergy test as she was allergic thru my breastmilk, but can't wait for her to have scrambled eggs with us or french toast! It really unlimits breakfast time!!
Question for Amelia: Those muffins look delicious - do you think they would hold together without the egg added? Would the banana bind them enough? Also what's the difference between baking powder and baking soda? I have only found the soda here in Greece ::)
Mum101 - I found that the pushing of food out of the mouth was a sign of molar activity!! The gums are a bit tender to chew on or pass even mushed food over them - we had a few weeks of nonstop food pushing out, then it disappeared and the molars came thru a little while after.
-
Hmmmm...have no idea about the egg...not sure if they would be cake-like without egg? Is there an alternative, like egg-beaters or something?? Sorry I'm not more help. Baking soda and baking powder are completely different things. No baking powder?? That's so strange! In the store it should be with the baking stuff...the flour and things like that. Most baking recipes call for that, although I have no idea what it does...? Something to do with rising maybe?? :-\
-
tried the apple slices this morning, he really liked them, I cut up thin slices when we went for our morning walk and he seemed to enjoy them alot!
-
Mum101 - I found that the pushing of food out of the mouth was a sign of molar activity!! The gums are a bit tender to chew on or pass even mushed food over them - we had a few weeks of nonstop food pushing out, then it disappeared and the molars came thru a little while after.
Ah that's interesting. He has 12 teeth so far, waiting for the set of 4 incisor ones to come through (on top of being unwell and possibly dropping his second day nap!!). The incisors are looking pretty close so perhaps they are bugging him.
-
Wow 12 already! We have 13 and the 3 incisors are bulging and causing a few probs (as usual) We got dinner refusal last night ::) I find it's better to ignore it as it's not a bad behaviour, just a phase iykwim? But it bottered me yesterday as I'd spent the day cooking and she flatly refused it - DH was hovering around waiting to polish off her dinner too!! At least he loved my cooking!!
I'm thinking to try giving her apple chunks with the skin and see if she goes for it or not - with her molars firmly in place, she has no reason not to be able to chew up the skin (they are just a little tough over here at the moment). I'll let you know! Well done Max for enjoying your apple slices (apple rings are also good and easy to hold - sliced the other way after using an apple corer).
-
wow Max doesnt have that many teeth, he has the 4 across the top, 2 bottom ones, 2 molars and i think hes getting the 2 top molars (are they called molars) i'm not sure what teeth are called what....hehe
It is really annoying when you spend all day preparing something yummy thinking they will love it and they dont eat! Max had 2.5hrs sleep this arvo amd he has been very whingy the last hour, and he;s not like that usually so i think his teeth are bothering him! :) sometimes i wish they were just born with teeth, they would look pretty funny, it would save all this pain and discomfort for them!
-
sometimes i wish they were just born with teeth, they would look pretty funny, it would save all this pain and discomfort for them!
Yeah but I bet the amount of women breastfeeding would drop!! ::) The thought of putting a sensitive full boob into a pirahna (sp?) toothed mouth wouldn't be very appealing to me!!! LOL
-
hahahaha I didnt think of that, it wouldnt appeal to me either! :)
-
marking a spot, come back and read/ post later x
-
LOL at the baby born with teeth! I'll be so glad when he gets these last 4!! then I'll know for sure it's not teething, until the second year molars, which DD got at 1.5 ::)
re dinner refusal, I made the grown ups a new recipe, cauliflower and lentil dahl, but I told DD she might not like it, it was big ask, but to try a bite anyway in case we make it again. I'd planned on making DS a chicken meal with carrots and apple so figured she could have some of that.
Well DS completely refused to touch it, DD LOVED the dahl :o and refused to eat the chicken meal. At least DH knew what was good for him and whatever he was given :P
-
well last night i cooked mashed potatoes and steamed all sorts of winter veg for tea and DH was going to cook steak and sausages on the BBQ once he did the arvo run around from ballet and basketball, but Max saw me mashing the potatoes and got his dinner bowl out of the cupboard and started crying saying "tea, tea" so i ended up giving him the mash and veg and stirred thru some of the kids tuna and he loved it, he did have a small bit of sausage when it was cooked, but now i know something else he will eat now!
He is really good at trying different things, just wish breakfast was as easy. I'm starting to think of giving up on brekkie altogether. You'd think he would be hungry after not eating all night.....NUP not max!
Or another idea is to feed him what he usually eats for lunch and tea! maybe he doesnt like "normal" brekkie stuff!
KIDS why arent they easy to work out?????
-
What a great thread..we have boring toast and cereal with fruit most days.
Just wanted to say my LO is not a great eater in the morning at all but is a fab eater in general. I find that I have to leave breakfast at least an hour, if not an hour and a half before she'll eat anything substantial otherwise its a bit of a waste of time. She has milk when she gets up and then breakfast a while later and that seems to help.
Maybe Max just needs a long time to come round to the idea of food in the morning!! Like you, I am amazed she isn't starving after sleeping all night!
-
Hi Shiv, if your LO isn't very hungry in the morning, why not give him his breakfast before he has hismorning milk so he fills up on food rather than the easy option of filling up on a bottle of milk? He can have a smaller bottle of milk when he wakes and then the rest after breakie or with his morning snack. Now he's on set meal times and taking in more, you don't need to have such a strict bottle/milk as long as he gets his milk gradually throughout the day he'll leave enough room for food. I wouldn't mess with the night bottle tho .... that's still our backup/security to know she's filled up over the day enough to get her thru the night - although as of 14mths old she's been cutting back on the amount she drinks at night, so she's obviously getting enough to see her thru! My DD won't eat on waking either (I never offered early morning milk tho) but she will drain her sippy of water before her breakfast - so thirsty not hungry first thing!
-
Max doesnt have milk in the morning after waking either, sometimes if he is up extra early i try the bottle but he will only have a few sucks and off to play! The last few days i have just been giving him a piece of toast with the other kids and then he eats more morning tea just before his day nap! Not worth fighting and stressing over it! He just doesnt want it, but then around 10.30/11.00 he seems happy to eat lots! That is the time he usually has his lunch as he sleeps from 12.00-2.00 then has a snack once he's awake again!
-
I bf so I like to feed her first thing in the morning. I don't think she'd be as interested if I left it until after breakfast! I don't mind waiting a while for breakfast time. Gives us a chance to get things sorted in the morning!
-
i think its personal choice Shiv, whatever works for your family! I used to spend a good 30 minutes fussing on getting max to eat brekkie, but the last few days i've kinda given up n stressing, he's just happy to sit in the high chair with the other kids half eating his toast! My other 2 Lo's used to have a full milk bottle when they woke, then about 20 minutes later they would eat a good brekkie of either cereal or toast and sometimes even abit of both! So different to max, he is alot smaller then they were though, he's 16months but looks about 10 months, so he;s quite tiny, must only have a little tummy!
-
I agree it's personal choice too. I just thought you were a little worried as to why he was eating loads at other times, sorry, didn't mean to suggest anything was wrong :-* I would also offer milk in the mornings if I was still BFing - I used to love the cuddles - well until she started fighting me and wanting a bottle at 8mths! ::) I still miss it tho. Well done on keeping it going Shiv!
Artemis is more into her colouring in her highchair than eating in it in the mornings ;) We get her egg allergy results back tomorrow evening, so maybe she will be allowed scrambled eggs or French toast on Saturday for breakfast!! Oooh I hope so, as everything seems to have egg in it the moment you are not allowed it! So hopefully it'll open up a whole range of new food tastes/textures for her!
-
Andi, did you just get her egg allergy tested to make sure she wasnt allergic before feeding it to her or had she showed signs of being allergic! where i am they dont just allergy test unles theres family history or they have showed signs.... i think they should just let you allergy test,as a procaution, i have never had any allergies with the other 2 LO's but i'm still cautious on what i try Max with!
havent attempted egg yet! :)
Hope all goes well for Artemis and she can have a yummy scrambled egg. Hmmmm yummo the thought of scrambled egg sounds good, I wish my husband wasnt night shift this week cos i would love scrambled egg on toast for mothers day on sunday!!!! I'll have to make it myself! :)
-
Yeah I think my LO is a bit fed up with the bf now-hard to interest her during the day but we'll keep going morning and night for a while and see how we go.
Think Max, like my LO Maeve must just take a while to warm up to food in the morning! You're just right to take the stress out of it in the mornings. Let him feel included with the toast but leave it at that! Your stress levels will be so reduced!!
How cute that Artemis is colouring in her highchair! Awh!! Maeve more interested in eating crayons at the mo than colouring although we have had a few strokes on paper so think shes starting to get the idea. Fingers crossed for no egg allergy!!! And you're so right, the minute you aren't allowed something in a diet, you see it in every single recipe!!
-
OMG sorry Shiv, I wrote my posts to you using He and His!!! Whoops, I even wrote the first post earlier with She etc but reread yours quickly mentioning Max and I got a whoosh of Mum-nesia and changed them all to He and His!!! Sorry Maeve!! DOH!!
Artemis was allergic to egg via my breastmilk, so I had to cut egg out of my diet for 8.5mths, and I eat a lot of eggs being veggie!! So we have kept her completely eggfree hoping it was just something early and she will grow out of it - plus we need to continue with her vaccinations (we stopped at the MMR, I think, as it is grown in egg white) and the paed refused to do any til she gets screened, then months of waiting for DHs health insurance to include DD before we pay out, but finally we are there! Fingers x'ed for the results - I'm so nervous as I really want to feed her eggs as a source of protein among many other things!!!
I'm lucky on the crayons thing as DD has never gummed anything, no toys ever went in her mouth, no bits of fluff from the floor, nothing! Made teething a pain in the butt, cos she couldn't help cut them through, but she has never put anything in her mouth apart from her beloved dummy!!
-
wow Andi how lucky are you that she never put anything in her mouth. Max was a shocker for fluff off of the floor, i swear he used to search my house for it, he even used to pluck his mat on his bedroom floor and eat it....He stopped doing it now thankfully as DH was going to take the mat out of his room, funny little habbits kids get!
fingers crossed for you tomorrow!
-
No worries! Poor Maeve has very little hair so is often confused for a boy anyways!!
And so lucky about the gumming! Maeve has chewed everything although thank goodness she is now at a stage where is she finds dirt or fluff or paper she will come and give it to me rather than munch it down!
Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
-
Thanks girls! I know it's nothing major compared to some of the test, but I so want her not to have any problems with foods and hidden ingredients ... I just freak out when I think of future parties where you would have to be so so careful what's lying around and what other parents might give her innocently! We have to ring after 7pm, so will let you know...
-
Max tried EGG custard for lunch but only had 2 spoons as he was extremely tired and irritable, so i'll save it for when he wakes. he thought it was a good idea to start the day at 6am....had to be my grocery shopping day, so we did the groceries after the older LO's were dropped at school and he came home to bed at 11am.....earlier then usual, but he wouldnt stop crying and wanted his bed!
He's been dribbling sooooooo much the last 3 days so i think the teeth are really giving him a problem! :( poor thing!
-
Poor Max...hope he likes the custard after his sleep. Maeve tried scrambled egg yesterday and loved it. Such an easy lunch option!!
And tell me about the dribbling..Maeve has been chewing on everything and was half awake all night crying on and off so I' definately think its teeth. Still hasn't a tooth in her head bless her!!
Fingers crossed still for the phone call later Andi.
-
Wow, really no teeth, poor little love will probably get a mouth full at once!
Thanks for the idea, i might do scrambled egg for lunch here aswell, being the weekend the older LO's are home and they love it....Thanks Shiv....
How did you go Andi, did you get good news?
-
WOOHOOOOOOO!!! ;D ;D ;D
Negative!!!!! She must have grown out of it - luckily, and I'm sure that being kept 100% eggfree til now has helped!! :) It was all worth it now she's fine! She had a slightly higher reading for the egg white, but still in the range of not intolerant, so yay ... eggs it is!!
Scrambled eggs here too later ... see how she goes as it's a completley new texture to her ... will probably fix her her normal lunch and give DH and me eggs and see if she wants to eat from our plates - all I need now is egg refusal!!!!!! ::) It feels like the world of toddler feeding has opened up considerably now!
Shiv, my IRL friend's LO had no teeth at 1yr old (she;s 1 week younger than my DD) and now she is waiting on no.3!! But she eats EVERYTHING!!!!! Tough gums are just as good as teeth I think!!
-
WOW Andi you must be so relieved! Thats great. Max ate a full tin of egg custard after his nap today and loved every bit, so i'll be buying more, its the only custard he's every eaten the full tin!
Let us know how she likes the scrambled egg! Hopefully she will love it. we had it here for lunch today but Max was asleep so he has still yet to try it!
-
Yeah for Artemis!! Hope she likes the scrambled egg and Max too!!! Maeve just had french toast for breakfast and munched it all up!! Must try custard now too..bit of a change from a yogurt for dessert!
Not a tooth in her head...she must be due one soon! But as you say, it doesn't stop her eating. I am always a bit afraid of certain foods but she manages with those hard gums and isn't a bit put off so we just go with it.
-
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY, to all you lovely ladies, hope you all have a nice relaxing day!
This morning I had to make my own yummy pancake mothers day brekkie as DH is working.
They were quite yum, the kids kept asking for more.
Max ate a full medium sized one cut up small, and some small diced strawberries so i was really happy with his brekkie this morning! Pity I dont have time for pancakes every morning, he would probably eat them every morning (until he gets sick of them)
Shiv, Max didnt get his first tooth until 9 months and he used to manage a fair bit of food aswell, amazing how tough those gums can be.
-
Happy Mothers Day to you!! We have ours in April!! My DH was at home and I was still the one who got up to make breakfast!! Maeve loves pancakes but I only have a chance to make them from scratch once a week! I stuck blueberries in them last week and she loved them. Glad Max liked them too xx
-
Happy Mummy's Day back at you too!! I also celebrate Mothering Sunday in April (this year) rather than Mother's Day!! ;D But here it's Mother's Day, but DH only remembered half way thru the day when I reminded him to call his Mum!!! ::) ::) ::)
Bek & Shiv, could I have the pancake from scratch recipe please?! Are these little pancakes (like scotch pancake size) or big crepe style ones (like for pancake day)?
Think I'll give French toast a whirl this morning, but not for breakfast, maybe snack time instead of her usual marmite on toast. Any of you make it with wholemeal bread? DD doesn't eat white bread if I give it now after so long with the brown stuff!
-
Not a tooth in her head...she must be due one soon! But as you say, it doesn't stop her eating. I am always a bit afraid of certain foods but she manages with those hard gums and isn't a bit put off so we just go with it.
Our ds didn't get his first tooth until 16mths... didn't stop him eating either!! He did get 4 on top together, closely followed by two on the bottom!
-
wow 16 months, thats amazing. The experts reckon that the longer the teeth are in the gums the better the teeth are! A cousin of mine was worried that her DS wasnt getting teeth so she took him to the dentist and thats what they told her! so your DS must have great teeth!

I did ask the dentist too and he said the same but who knows! Don't know if that was his way of reassuring me. They were having a right laugh at our baby signing class the other day about it and saying I'd have to get Maeve baby dentures if the teeth didn't come soon!!
Andi...the french toast I did the other day was with wholemeal bread (had no white or I probably would have used it) and it turned out fine. Maeve is used to wholemeal bread so she gobbled it up.
I'm away to put Maeve down for a sleep and I'll be back with the pancake recipe.
-
French toast was nibbled and refused ... don't blame her, I only ate mine cos I'd taken the time to make it!! I put cinnemon into the egg mix, but couldn't really taste it and the bread and egg just tasted cardboardy ... what did I do wrong??
-
i was quite worried but they came in the end!! I also discovered they can do an x-ray to check if the tooth buds were there. I didn't want ds to have one but if we'd got to 18mths i might have considered it!! Wish he had lovely teeth... bit of a battle to brush them -lol!
-
Pancakes )at last!! Very basic. My Gran gave it to me...used to make us pancakes every Tuesday the whole way through school!
100g (4oz) plain flour
1 egg
300ml (1/2 pint) milk
optional pinch salt
To make the pancake batter, add the milk, egg and then the flour and blend using an electric blender or food processor. Or if a blender is not available, sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Add the egg and beat well. Then add the milk gradually and beat to make a smooth batter.
Heat a little oil in a large frying pan until hot and then pour enough batter to thinly coat the base of the pan. Cook for a couple of minutes each side.
Bad luck about the french toast Andi. I put vanilla extract in mine the other day and it was lovely. Am wondering is it nicer with white bread?
If there are no teeth here by 18 months I may have to look into an xray!! But no doubt once she gets them I'll be on saying how she won't brush them..LOL!!
-
Another recipe... american style fluffy cake like pancakes
100g plain flour
half a tsp baking powder
1 tbsp caster sugar
1 egg
125mls milk
25g melted butter
Whizz in blender to make a thick mixture, add more milk of necessary.
-
Shiv thats the same recipe we use...yummo, sometimes i use self raising flour to make thicker ones.
Might try the american style fluffy cakes though.
We couldnt get my oldest DS to brush his teeth so we took him to the dentist to check everything all out and I asked the dentist what we could do and he recommended buying him a flash electric toothbrush. we did and he loved it, couldnt wait to clean his teeth morning and night and anywhere in between...so thats worth a try!
-
Ooh thanks for the recipe Shiv and Hems (sorry, don't know your real name) they look lovely .. will get DD to try both kinds!! I'll have to get my Mum to send me the Scotch Pancake recipe too, I remember LOVING theses as the occasional treat on a Saturday afternoon!! :-*
-
The american pancakes are a lot like scotch pancakes x
-
Another cereal low in sugar is puffed corn. We get it in the organic section of the grocery store. All it is is a ball of corn. Nice and light, no other ingredients (though kind of bland to the adult palate). Makes a great finger food for breakfast or snack.
DS also likes homemade banana bread (can post a super easy recipe if interested) or a microwaved egg (just scramble in a bowl and microwave on high for 1 min comes out like a scambled egg but in 1 big piece that you can cut into bite sizes and let LO eat as finger food)
Also yogurt of any flavor is nice in the AM.
-
I'll look for the puffed corn cereal, are you in australia?
Yummo i love banana bread so the recipe would be great! I did have a yummy banana and raspberry bread but i cant find it!
I make my kids the scrambled egg in the microwave aswell, quite yummy!
Max loves all sorts of youghurt, so thats always 2nd offer if he doesnt eat what i make for brekkie!
-
Second for the banana bread recipe!!
I always make scrambled egg in a pot and it sticks and is ridicuously hard to clean. Never even thought of the microwave. But thats what i'll be doing from now on.
-
We don't have a microwave :'( I do it in a non-stick tefal frying pan with a little olive oil and it always comes off easily ... I think the trick is to leave it alone for the first few mins before scrambling it up - my DHs always sticks when he makes it cos he's in there whisking away as soon as it's hit the pan, and it gets stuck everywhere ... mine tends to looklike an omelette for the first few mins then scranmbles up nicely. The other day Artemis had avocado on toast, which I thought would be a good breakie idea too.
-
Max sometimes has avocado and banana mashed together and LOVES it.....and if you mash it up quite well you could use it as a spread aswell, i havent done that yet but i'm gonna give it a try, he loves it on its own and he loves toast so why not combine! :)
-
I think I am whisking too early as I do use olive oil! Am determined not to let scrambled egg beat me!! But I'm going to see how the microwave works out too!!
Maeve doesn't like avocado or banana. I keep trying just in case (a banana would be so handy when out and about) so we'll see!
-
Peanut butter and banana is delicious too! I made pancakes this morning with the "Shake and Make" bottles you can buy... was feeling lazy! Looking forward to the banana bread recipe....
-
i sure love those shake and make pancakes sometimes when your on a time schedule!!!! EASY....
I havent tried peanut butter with the kids, my DD has an allergy to it so havent let max try yet! too afraid! Chloe comes out in a rash and complains her throat feels blocked so she hasnt had it since her first try 4 weeks ago!!!! I love it though....that was my brekkie every morning when pregnant with all 3 kids, peanut butter on toast! yummo!
-
Grrrr ... I just get Artemis to eat eggs (seemed to be in every recipe when she couldn't have them) and now you are all posting about bananas ... she REFUSES to eat banana!!!! LOL ::) ;D It was her first food (10 days of trying babyrice with no spoonfuls going down, I gave her a mushed up banana and she wolfed down 2/3 of it!! little piggy, but since then she has refused it everytime it's offered (at least once a month!) she will occasionally have a miniscule bit of ours, or lick the edge of a whole banana, but grimaces, gags and her eyes water if it goes in!! Drama queen or what!! She won't eat banana yoghurt or fruit mixes I make if there is a bit of banana in it.
I'm also wary about peanuts - no family allergies as such (I get mouth ulcers if I eat peanuts ... and I used to love M&Ms!!!!), but after the egg, I'm not sure... maybe wait a few years ... ??? I too loved peanunt butter. I wonder if it is the pesticides cos if I eat walnuts, after 5 mins my mouth and tongue feel like they're covered in small cuts, but if I eat from MILs walnut tree, I'm fine! My mum was the same with pineapple, but after eating from a friends tree abroad, she was ok, but not with the fresh or tinned ones back in UK again.
-
well it could be the pesticides, makes you wonder doesnt it. I would love to have the time and energy to grow my own fruits and veg...But who has that time with 3 kids....2 of them are full on nearly every afternoon after school...
Our diets will soon change if my oldest DS tests results come back with him having type 1 diabetes. He had blood tests this morning! I said to DH its only fair that we all follow the same diet to make it fair on Preston if he has it...
I'm praying he doesnt have it but in a way i will be glad to have answers to his problems, cos if he gets the all clear we are back to square one again!
The Dr told me to come back monday after school but i cant wait that long so i'm hoping the results are back tomorrow afternoon so i can try and get them tomorrow!!
I'll keep you posted on the results!
Max isnt as much of a fan of banana like he used to be, i dont do the mash avo and banana too much anymore, he seems to like it with the avo but not on its own. But he loves banana bread, so thats worth a try with Artemis! :)
Tonight I made Max's formula bottle and added a small amount of cows milk, will add a little extra every night until its all cows milk...he wont take cows milk cold turkey....keeps spitting it out!
-
Good luck with Preston's results - I say good luck, but either way it's going to be tough on him (and you guys) eh? Like you said tho, it is always good to finally have some answers. Fingers crossed for you anyway. :-*
I am going to try the banana and weetabix muffins that Deb in Oz gave me the recipe for ages ago on a thread ... I wil have to go searching thru all my old posts to find it tho! I'll give you ladies the link when I find it if you're interested?
A ate 1/2 and avocado yesterday, but today completely refused the other half ::) Toddlers eh? ::) Never mind, I'm growing the seed to go with our other one - I grew the seed from her 1st ever avocado and now it has sprouted and has leaf buds!!!!! YAY!!! ;D
-
Ooh i wouldn't try peanut butter with a history of allergies... leave it off for a while. Ds won't eat bananas either... i think it's a consistancy thing. His face is a picture when you show him a banana!! He does love peanut butter so thought i would try, he didn't eat it but i did... yum yum it was lush!! Banana and wheatabix muffins sound nice...
-
Here you are ...

Good luck with Preston's results...keep us posted!
What is it with bananas? Again on the consistency..I couldn't eat a mashed banana..yuk!! Maeve will have a bit if i'm eating one (she would eat coal if I was eating if first though!!) but not if I give it to her at a meal! Toddlers indeed!!
Would love that recipe Andi!
Am starting to give Maeve cows milk too but she is not impressed! She will take it in cereal etc but not as a drink. Will have to keep trying as I want to stop breast feeding at some stage and want her to drink milk!! I am so over pumping too (bad mummy) so mixing the two isn't an option. Please tell me she'll learn to like it eventually??!
-
Posted at same time Andi! Thanks for recipe!

Will try these too ... sound yummy!!
-
mmmm yummy, the honey weetbix muffins sound delicious! might have to have a baking weekend! (in between football and basketball)
Thanks everyone i'm at least happy that its something Preston can control if he has it and not life threatening if we control it properly!
I'm eager for the results though!!!
Well i added 100ml cows milk and 120ml formula last night and Max drank it, so i'll do the same consistency today/tonight and change again tomorrow! but Shiv the change will be hard for you BF...Not sure how to go about that!
I was making a the formula up this morning ( i make a jug up for the whole day) and felt abit sad that soon i wont be doing it anymore. I think because Max is my last baby i have been holding onto all the baby stuff! I still snuggle him into me and give him his bottles!!! :) but i love the snuggle time!
We had a HV check up yesterday to monitor his weight, he hasnt grown much but he is fine. What is the weight of your LO's out there, Max is just about 10kg. Not sure what that is in pounds, i did havea conersion chart somewhere....I'll keep looking. He is 78cm in length aswell!
Just interested in everyone elses LO's...
-
Leo isn't growing well. He's 9 kilos now, maybe 9.2kg. But he was 9 kilos at 8 months. He's 77cm tall. Giving he's been unwell for 2 weeks, I'm a bit worried. As a baby he was always a big bubba, everyone always thought he was older than he was. And it was easy for me, as DD was the same, esp tall for her age.
-
Max has never been a big bubba, he weighed 6 pound born. He had a time from 4 months-9 months where he only gained 0.75g. So we were referred to a paediatrician. he wasnt concerned though! He has gained not even 2 kilo from 8 months - 16 months! But he's active and healthy i guess!
-
Glad to know someone else is in the same boat! It's worrying me at the moment.
Can you tell me more about the paediatrician visit? Why he wasn't concerned and when you feel it should be a concern?
-
I have no idea when it becomes a concern, i was quite concerned at the time as I think he should have gained alot more that 0.75g in 5 months. My other kids gained alot more and were average. max was and still is well and truely below average!
The paed checked him over completely and also made sure he wasnt tongue tied! Everything was GREAT and he said he was a happy, healthy baby boy and he even told me not to worry that he wasnt eating much and taking much in a bottle. I couldnt get him to drink anymore than 100ml at 9 months, and he wouldnt touch much solid food either. He did tell me to perservere with solids and only offer fruits/veggies. Nothing sweet until he ate more. He also looked at my DH and myself and said we were obviously small people so Max wasnt going to be big....But i also pointed out that my other 2 kids werent like that as babies. Still he wasnt concerned, he said it would become a concern if he continued to lose weight and drop below the 5th percentile line which he is following at the moment! He just told me to get him weighed every few months to make sure he is following that line and if he dips below to go back and see him again! He is still following the line as he thinks he will follow it all his life.
Hope that makes sense. have you seen a HV about you LO???
-
I think as long as they are develpoing well, eating a range of food (quality rather than quantity), happy disposition, sleeping well (always a good sign) then they are just growing at their own rate! I was told that from year 1 - 2 they should only gain around 1-1.5kg! so maybe they will catch up during this slowing down period?? Basically I think they slow down because they are burning up all their calorie intake physically and mentally. DD was born 2.8kg 49cm long but rapidly guzzled her way up to the 95th centile and has stayed there on all three charts (head circ, height and weight) her weight has dropped recently tho (last 2mths she lost 100g) but am not worried as she has podgy bits still!! But I can totally understand you worrying as a mum if they haven't put on for a while, but as long as they are checked over, then try and put your minds at ease. :-*
-
Maeve's always been on the 95th percentile too. Funnily I just got her weighed yesterday and she was 10.4kg, was 9.4kg in January and I was surprised it was only a kilo difference although she's grown taller.
I wouldn't worry too much about the weight so long as your LOs seem happy and healthy. My DH's nephew (will be 2 in June) is only a kilo heavier than Maeve now. He has always been on the 5th percentile for weight and i think SIL was concerned as Maeve was catching up. She got him assessed though and the HV said he was meeting all the other developmental markers so she didn't see a cause for concern. Just has to monitor it and make sure it stays on same percentile.
-

You'll find that after a year their rate of growth slows down considerably and their appetite isn't quite as huge as before... all "Normal". Your SIL sounds like me... my almost 2 and a half year old is the same weight as my friend's 8mo =(
-
well i'm happy that Max is "normal" then, my FIL always says how little he is and he had been away for 5 weeks with my 2 yr old nephew who is ALOT bigger then max and when he got home he said max looked skinnier and smaller. I told him its probably cos he'd spent so much time with nephew whose very solid! But i got him checked anyway to "shut" him up aswell and also put my mind at rest!
I guess we'd all be worried if they were obese and overweight aswell, so i'm happy with my smaller little munchkin...he does burn alot of energy all day as he is never still unless its during his 2 hr nap! :)
How does everyone make sure they get all the proper food groups into one day for your toddlers?
What are the amounts they should be having???
-
I found this brekkie recipe today. i havent tried it yet but I think Max might like it....
Breakfast Soup/toast fingers
8oz vanilla yoghurt
1tsp honey
1/2 cup cubed banana
1/2 cup peaches, peeled
1/4 cup wheatgerm
Blend together and top with additional wheatgerm. Serve with toast fingers...
-
Hope that makes sense. have you seen a HV about you LO???
Yep, Leobin was accidentally weighed at 11 months and after thinking it over I took him in to check his weight. The health nurse said to try to fatten him up, if he doesn't gain after all that perhaps there is a food issue. He gained 260g in the month (which I think he's lost after being sick these couple of weeks). She said go to the doctor. The doctor checked him over and asked if I hadn't accidentally found out his weight would I have thought there was something wrong. I said no, I noticed his limbs were a bit leaner but he was happy and active.
When i was trying to fatten him up I could feed him more food, even some by spoon (mince and veggies with almond meal added) so in a way I could add more to him, but after being unwell he's accepted food off a spoon once.
-
wow that sounds exactly like me, I took Max to my GP as he had an ear infection and he weighed him for me, (he was 8.5 months) and he weighed 7 kg and i thought it sounded familiar but i didnt have my baby book with me, as soon as i checked when i got home, he weighed 6.75kg at 4 months, so not much of a gain in 4.5 months! So i freaked out. I probably wouldnt have worried to much either, I knew he was small, but the not gaining weight worried me. Both my other kids gained good amounts all the time, so i knew it wasnt quite normal!
Hope you get some peace of mind soon! :)
xxxx
-
I think they are all 'normal' in their own way ;). Funny how they are all so different!! I think so long as they are happy and active there's not too much to worry about!! Hopefully Leobin will get his appetite back now that he's feeling a bit better. Is the HV checking in with you or did she just tell you to come back if you are concerned?

You know I think about this all the time and still haven't come across a good way to ensure I'm getting all into Maeve that she should have. Saying that I content myself that she has a good diet and doesn't eat alot of junk at all and I think well if she didn't get all her veg today she'll make up for it tomorrow IYKWIM. I imagine over the course of a week she gets a good, varied and fairly balanced diet. I try to stick fruit in cereal or with yogurt or cheese on her toast to get another 'portion' in!
I found this on a website:
Energy
Toddlers need about 1000 calories a day (the daily intake for adult women is 2000 and 2500 for men) from across all the major food groups:
meat, fish, poultry and eggs – 2 portions daily
bread, cereals, rice, potatoes and pasta – 5 portions daily
fruit and vegetables – 5 portions daily
dairy produce and other calcium-rich foods – 4 portions daily
Portion sizes: toddlers vary in the amount they eat – anything from a quarter to half an adult portion size. They may prefer to eat little and often rather than have three larger meals a day.

-
Thanks I'll check that out, I just worry aswell that i'm not getting it all in. max has a great variety and he hardly eats junk either. I let the older kids have their "snacky" things when he's asleep or not watching so he doesnt want it! Dont know how much longer i will get away with that!
I agree that as long as they are developing and happy and active they are all "normal".
I did worry at first though "mothers instinct" but I realise he isnt going to be a giant. But takes alot to put your mind to rest!
-
I remember reading somewhere that it is easier to check that they are getting a good range of food groups spread over a week rather than beating yourself up daily that they missed the fruit part of the dairy bit iykwim? I thinnk this takes the pressure off and I certainly don't worry now when we have a bad day (either her choice of because we are out of the house). She's happy and developing well, and that's what shows to me.
Artemis is also very low on junk food (the occasional fish finger) but she doesn't have any sugar products - I get Organix biscuits sent over here as ALL baby foods here are laden with sugar!! It's so annoying and unhealthy >:( But I can see that it must be so much harder when you have older ones eating snacks, well done on keeping the older ones junk til Max is in bed - must make it easier ... Artemis is now starting to take an interest in what me or DH are eating, so we will have to start watching what we eat infront of her soon!!
-
Sorry it took a while but I've been really busy
Here's the banana bread recipe I use
The 'I can't believe it's so easy' banana bread recipe
Ingredients
2 tbsp butter or margarine (soft)
3 ripe bananas well mushed
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
Mix the bananas, eggs and butter in bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. Combine the wet and dry mixtures together and then pour into a greased pan. Bake at 350 for 50-60 min or until top turns golden brown.
Hints:
This is a very forgiving recipe, it doesn't really matter how big your bananas are, but the softer and riper they are, the easier they are to mush. To save some washing up, I usually start by beating the eggs in the larger bowl. Then I add the banana (whole) and the butter/margarine and mush it all up in the large bowl until it's a lumpy mess. Then I add the dry ingredients right on top, stir the top together lightly and then mix together the whole thing together. I usually make it in a bunt pan (the round one with the hole in the middle) and I cook it for 50 min. You can make it in a loaf pan or as muffins but your cook times may vary.
If your LO is into it, you can add nuts or for a special treat chocolate chips.
Makes a great breakfast or lunch.
Enjoy!
