Title: Waking after 45min in bed
Post by: chelled17 on October 17, 2009, 15:08:51 pm
I need some help on getting my son to sleep past 45 minutes after I put him to bed at night.  It is almost impossible to get him to go back to sleep at this point, where as naps when he wakes up after 45 minutes, I go in an replug his paci, and he'll sleep the rest of his nap.  But at bed time it seems to be a different story.  He has been doing this pretty much since he was 1 month old.  He is now 4 months old, but it has recently got worse.  crying anywhere between 10 minutes (if I give in and feed him) all the way till his next feed (an hour and a half)  Could it be that he is actually hungry after 1hr 30 minutes at bedtime?  Here's a little background on him.  He was born on time, June 10th 2009, 8lb 11 oz, He can go 3- 4 hours during the day between feeds. And can stay awake 1hr 45 min - 2 hrs.  Never rocked to sleep, usually falls asleep independently. Here is our EASY routine.

E- 7:00
S-
A-8:45 woke up for day.
E-10:00
A
S-10:40 First Nap woke after 45 minutes, and went back to sleep after re plug
A-12:40
E-1:40
A
S 2:40 Slept for an hour, and would not go back to sleep.
A 3:40
E 4:40
A
S 5:30 Catnap
A 6:45
E 7:40 then bath.
A
S 8:30 In Bed
A 9:15 cries till he is fed then goes to sleep waking again at 2am and 5am to eat

I know my routine looks like it's all over the place, but if I try and do a four hour easy he is hungry after 3hrs and it cuts into his naptime, so this is what it is at the moment  :P

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Michelle :)

Your LO is bf right?  You could try to do a 4h EASY, but kind of top him off before his naps so that he lasts straight through...well, or at least you know he'll be able to last hunger-wise straight through the S time.  So your routine would look like EAES.  Or, you could top off a little bit earlier and put some A time/wind down routine right before S (which is what I think would be best): EAEAS.  I see from your routine above that he's more EASAE.  So, maybe just something new to try? :)

I don't think your LO is hungry less than 2h after his last meal.  I think it's more a comfort thing...it's possible that he's OT or OS (or both) right before bedtime, so when he wakes up he's looking for food to comfort him.

Do you think he's getting enough sleep from his naps?  Or do you find that they're normally always about 1h long?

Yes he is BF.  I have been toying with his routines these past few weeks trying to get a good one, that would work for both of us I think I will try EAEAS for the next few days, and see how that works for us.

It is definitely a comfort thing, cause I'm sure he's not hungry either. and possibly a bit of OS.  I don't think he is OT cause he doesn't show signs of tiredness any earlier, and if I try to put him down, lets say after 1hr 30 min, he fights me and cries until the 2 hr mark, then he goes down very nicely!
He usually sleeps 1hr 30 min for 2 naps, and then 45 for his last, but on this particular day, he slept for 2hrs for the AM nap then he was less tired for his second nap, thus sleeping only for an hour.  But usually it's the same for both.  If he sleeps any longer in the day he wakes up and is very restless at night time.

What kinds of activities could I do before his bedtime to ensure that it is not OS?
